Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: AceWiki is a semantic wiki that is powerful and at the same time
easy to use. Making use of the controlled natural language ACE, the formal
statements of the wiki are shown in a way that looks like natural English.
In order to help the users to write correct ACE sentences, AceWiki provides
a predictive authoring tool.

Changes: There is now an Ant script to create the WAR file that is needed
to run AceWiki on a server. Documentation has been added describing how to
get AceWiki running. The user interface contains a warning message that
should solve a frequent problem: evaluation showed that users often create
sentences starting with "a ..." when they should say "every ...". Now, the
AceWiki editor detects such "a ..." sentences and asks the users whether it
should be "every ..." instead. A bug in the chart-parser module has been
fixed: some forms of long but syntactically correct sentences were
previously rejected.

About: AgileWiki is an SDK for assembling software systems which are
fluid, easily configured and can be reorganized on-the-fly to meet ever
changing requirements. It includes a COW-based database, the Rolonics
programming paradigm, and semantic inferencing.

Changes: A plugin interface was added. The new ConfigurationManager
converts a list of plugins into a configuration file. Keywords are now
broken out as a separate plugin. Changes to the basic architecture are now
restricted, as changes not preserved when migrating to a new release via
dump/load are no longer permitted. Dump no longer writes out prebuilt
rolons. The renameChild command is working again.

About: The ATLAS (Automatically Tuned Linear Algebra Software) project is
an ongoing research effort focusing on applying empirical techniques in
order to provide portable performance. It provides C and Fortran77
interfaces to a portably efficient BLAS implementation, as well as a few
routines from LAPACK.

Changes: A complete rewrite of the ATLAS threading system so as to include
support native Windows threads and processor affinity, along with other
code speedups. Fixes for building errors under Windows. Dependency info for
ATL_ilaenv so that it is recompiled once lapack tuning is complete. A fix
for an error in configure where it issued commands in the wrong directory
when the user built lapack directly from a tar file. Detection of kernels
that do well in parallel operations. Assorted bugfixes.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop
inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by
taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is
configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a
backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or
every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you
can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

Changes: Sorting files and directories by name is now case insensitive.
"gtk-" items are now ignored by getmessages.sh, since these are GTK stock
item IDs and should not be changed.

Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Config-Model provides a framework for editing and validating the
content of any configuration file or data. With a configuration model
(expressed in a data structure), Config-Model provides a user interface and
a tool to validate configuration. An optional graphical (Perl/Tk) or curses
interface can be used to edit configuration data that will be validated
according to the user-provided model. Config-Model includes a model example
for fstab and a small fstab demo.

Changes: This release adds an option to the config-edit command so the
user can choose which read/write backend to use. For instance, with
"config-edit-sshd -backend augeas", the user selects Augeas to read and
write the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, user-controllable result ranking, the ability to
return results with highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts
(like Amazon). It can easily integrate with other languages with
XML/JSON/HTML. There is a UI for all operations, so no Java coding is
necessary. Deleted or updated records in database can be synchronized also.

Changes: This release adds multiple scheduling for the same index. It
includes counting integer zeros for facet searching. It improves numeric
facet search by adding open-ended ranges. A bug related to reading float
numbers into integers has been fixed. Caching has been added for multi-row
queries. Batching has been added for multi-row queries.

About: EiffelStudio is an IDE for the Eiffel language (ECMA-367, ISO/IEC
25436, and ACM Software System Award 2006). It includes: Eiffel compiler,
Eiffel editor, Eiffel code browsing tool, graphical design tool,
refactoring tool, debugger, profiler, and Eiffel analysis tools (Metrics,
Dependencies, etc.). Eiffel generates C or CLI for .NET or Mono. Eiffel
applies O-O principles and Design by Contract for high-quality software.
Many Eiffel libraries are included: ADT, network, GUI, database, parsing
(including an Eiffel parser), XML, Web, COM, and more.

Changes: This release uses the catcall free ~ operator in place of
{ANY}.is_equal. It may break your code if your code expects true comparison
when comparing objects of different types. A runtime performance problem
when a GC cycle could take up to 1h instead of just a few milliseconds has
been fixed. An issue with the compiler not properly handling the type of
inherited formal generic parameters has been fixed.

[030] - HylaFAX 5.2.8
  by Lee Howard (http://freshmeat.net/users/faxguy/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 10:39

Communications :: Fax

About: HylaFAX is a fax and paging system for Unix. It supports sending
facsimile, receiving facsimile, polled retrieval of facsimile, transparent
shared data use of the modem and sending alpha-numeric pages. The software
is structured around a client-server architecture. Fax modems may reside on
a single machine on a network and clients can submit outbound jobs from any
machine that can communicate with the machine on which the modems reside.
An access control mechanism is included to control which users on which
machines may access a server.

Changes: DSO is supported on SCO. Handling of CRP in non-ECM receive was
fixed. Log enhancements were made. A failure is thrown if there is a TIFF
write error. dataTimeout is initialized. Dialtest and typetest are removed
in "make uninstall". The "-q spool" option was added for faxcron.
JobProtection is on by default. faxq is now prevented from reusing old
prepared image files from other jobs. Faxstate "DOWN" persists through a
faxq modem release. Collisions are avoided in hash code. The hfaxd -D sleep
option was added. IgnoreModemBusy and AllowIgnoreModemBusy were added.

[032] - jsgal 0.80
  by Andreas S. Krebs (http://freshmeat.net/users/krebs/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 01:19

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: jsgal is a dynamic Web-based gallery. However, rather than
generating the gallery pages on a server using scripts, it is implemented
in Javascript and DHTML and generates the pages in the client's browser. No
offline generation of the Web pages is required; only a list of images has
to be maintained, which allows easy updating and extending of galleries.
This allows you to host dynamic galleries on servers without scripting
support, or on local filesystems (e.g. CD-ROMs).

Changes: This release adds image preview to the thumb gallery while the
mouse is above a thumb. It adds tooltips to all buttons. It has a new
default stylesheet. It has support for horizontal or vertical scaling on
individual images for rendering very high or wide images.

[035] - Lzip 1.3 (Stable)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 11:55

System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Lzip is a lossless data compressor based on the LZMA algorithm,
with very safe integrity checking and a user interface almost identical to
the one of bzip2. Lzip decompresses almost as fast as gzip and compresses
better than bzip2, which makes it well suited for software distribution.

Changes: This version automatically chooses the smallest possible
dictionary size for each file during compression, saving memory during
decompression. This version is able to decompress version 1 files that will
be produced by lzip 1.4. Version 1 files include the size of the compressed
data. This will facilitate safe recovery of undamaged members from

  by bkeep (http://freshmeat.net/users/bkeep/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 00:58

About: OpenAutoClassifieds is a vehicle classifieds manager. Intended to
be both easy to install and easy to administer, it uses PHP to drive a
MySQL backend, thus creating a tool that is fast and flexible. No HTML
coding is required to add, delete, or modify listings. You can upload
photos via your Web browser. If photos are not uploaded for a vehicle, a
"photo not available" image will be automatically displayed for the
listing.

Changes: A search bug for empty searches will display all listings instead
of an error. This release fixes make and model combo boxes not being
populated on the add and edit listings pages. It splits the file structure
for db.inc.php and adds a new file for env settings. When an admin adds or
edits a listing, the seller and sellerid are inserted/updated correctly.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: paexec distributes performing the given tasks (stdin) across
several CPUs or machines in a network.

Changes: This release adds a -z option. If applied, read/write(2)
operations from/to nodes become non-critical. In case paexec has lost
connection to the node, it will reassign the failed task to another node
and, if the -s option is applied, will output the string "fatal" to stdout.
This makes paexec resistant to the I/O errors, and as a result you can
create paexec clusters even over a network consisting of unreliable hosts
(Internet?). Failed hosts are marked as such, and will not be used during

  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 13:36

Desktop Environment :: Tools
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: Rally is a software component with a user interface which allows
you to install, update, and remove packages on RPM based operating systems.
Primary functions (downloading software packages from network repositories
and their installation) may be performed in parallel, giving a vast
performance boost in many typical situations. The user interface is split
into two independent parts: a graphical one and a command line utility. The
graphical interface contains package searching and category browsing
functions. Rally assumes the Fedora project as a reference platform.

Changes: Special filelists processing was added to the dependency
resolver, which allows you to perform OS modernization with the enabled
parallel installer. An opportunity to verify digital signatures of packages
during installation was implemented. A crash on GUI exit was fixed. Package
searching and broken dependency reporting were added to enhance the CLI.
Performance was improved by means of installation program atoms grouping.

[064] - Skwish 0.1.3
  by babak (http://freshmeat.net/users/babak_farhang/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 11:49

System :: Archiving

About: Skwish is a fast, simple, lightweight Java library for storing
blobs on the file system. It allows multiple concurrent readers and
writers, provides all-or-nothing write semantics, and is designed to
survive abnormal, unclean shutdown. Skwish is a structured implementation
of storing all blobs in a single file to save on file system I/O. Skwish is
premised on the proposition that blob storage ought to be orthogonal to the
task of indexing. It is meant to be a clean and simple store on which some
other index can be built.

Changes: This release introduces a read-only HTTP interface for skwish
segment stores. It uses a new, experimental embedded HTTP server that ships
with the library. Besides providing a good public interface to the contents
of a store, this new feature also provides a convenient way to inspect ad
hoc entries using just a browser (e.g., for debugging purposes).

  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 18:56

Database
Information Management :: Records Management

About: SportsTracker is an application for recording sporting activities.
It is not bound to a specific kind of sport, as categories can be created
for all sport types, such as cycling, running, or tennis. The main
advantages are the good overview of your exercises and the easy creation of
exercise statistics for specific time ranges and sport types. Users of
heart rate monitors (Polar and CicloSport) can import, display (including
diagrams), and organize the recorded exercise data.

Changes: The biggest improvement is drag and drop support of recorded
exercise files to the calendar view; the import of recorded data is done
much faster now. The calendar now displays exercise tooltips with further
information. All diagrams scale correctly and use proper system fonts. Full
builds (Ant) can also be done without the NetBeans IDE. The Czech and
French translations have been updated.

[072] - trading-shim 081219
  by R P Herrold (http://freshmeat.net/users/rpherrold/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 11:36

Database :: API
Office/Business :: Financial :: Investment

About: The trading shim is a command line interpreter with a DBMS backend
to the socket-based 'binary format' API of the Interactive Brokers' Trader
Workstation. It uses mnemonic ASCII text commands to permit downstream
clients to easily access several worldwide securities markets and exchanges
(stocks, options, futures, bonds, and Forex) for "tick" data and history
(intraday and EoD). It also allows clients to initiate and supervise trades
of securities, manage accounts, and more.

Changes: The get account code logic during initialization was modified to
read any number of order status and open order messages until reaching the
first account code quad. This is a change from the prior approach of
reading only to a specified number of entries, in light of some observed
behavior by European TWS instances.

[073] - TRIXER 0.20
  by Marco Caminati (http://freshmeat.net/users/caminati/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 13:41

System :: Archiving :: Mirroring

About: TRIXER creates catalogs of transparent file indexes. A transparent
file index is an exact mirror of a directory, except that each of its file
is void, thus "taking no space", while apparently having the same size of
its indexed counterpart so as to describe it fully. This is accomplished by
combining sparse files support with fusecompress on-the-fly compression
technology. This is useful for many purposes, e.g. creating a catalog of
your CD/DVD-ROM library to browse its contents without having to
physically access it. The advantage of this software is that a TRIXER
catalog is a plain mountable ext2 filesystem, allowing enhanced
interoperability with the huge lot of available software to handle the
catalog in a number of ways.

Changes: The predetermined limit on catalog size has been removed. XFS is
used instead of ext2: the advantage is total inodability and easier
calculation of growing amounts, while the disadvantage is the inability to
shrink the filesystem. The preemptively huge image approach was discarded
in favor of dynamic growing: the number of inodes needed is grossly guessed
at addition time and the catalog is grown as needed. mkindex.sh was cleaned
up (moving virtualcopy to a inner function, which also improved
performance). trxclean.sh was added to clean the mount database.

[077] - WANPIPE 3.3.15 (Development)
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Mon, Dec 22nd 2008 23:08

Communications
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System

About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the system
CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component to the
Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL router/firewall with
proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards support an optional on
board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external components of a
traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be directly connected to
the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols, ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay,
PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming (API), BiSync(API), and
SDLC(API). Furthermore, WANPIPE supports custom API development such as:
Credit card verification, Voice-over IP, Satellite Comm. All device drivers
are part of the standard Linux Kernel distribution.

Changes: This release adds support for B600 Analog Card, task stop
function on shutdown, X21 support, an option to run Zaptel & TDM API on the
same span, and the XMTP2 API for old PMC T1/E1 cards. It fixes the TTY
driver for Linux kernel 2.6.26 and greater, tristate mode using wanpipemon,
yellow alarm handler on T1/E1, E3 support for A301 cards, Serial AFT card
events, and the Channel Bank ring problem on AFT T1/E1 cards. It updates
AFT Core to fix XMTP2 startup with 16E1 links.
