Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: Abraca is a GTK2 client for the XMMS2 music player. It is designed
with collections in mind, which makes managing your music a breeze.

Changes: The UI has been reworked. Adding and removing stuff to or from
the media library is now possible. Detection if xmms2d is running or not
is also working now.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: TeX error handling was improved. A dvipsOptions configuration
variable was added. A recently introduced bug in the XDR routine xinput
was fixed. Compilation under the upcoming GCC 4.3 release is now
supported. Non-global PDF animations, where each frame is separately
scaled and written to a file, were implemented. Reading from standard
input now works correctly even in the absence of a working readline
library. A build problem under Fedora Core 5 was fixed. Parallel builds
are now supported.

[003] - Backup Manager 0.7.6 (Development)
  by Alexis SUKRIEH (http://freshmeat.net/users/sukria/)
  Thu, May 10th 2007 11:30

About: Backup Manager is a tool for generating archives easily. It is
designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for backing up their
system. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, and zip archives, can perform
incremental backups, and can upload archives to remote hosts with FTP,
SSH, or RSYNC. It can be run in a parallel mode with different
configuration files. The configuration file is simple to understand. The
backup process can also be customized thanks to hook scripts.

Changes: This release comes after a couple of months of development. It
provides a major security fix for the MySQL backup method, many bugfixes,
and better documentation.

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Weighted Random,
Least Session, Least Bandwidth, Hash, Agent, and Randomized Agent) and a
customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It supports VRRP to
set up high availability configurations on multiple nodes. It supports
SNMP, integrating the BALANCENG-MIB with Net-SNMPD. It integrates pcap
packet dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge".

Changes: A "show instance" has been included in the service snapshot file
generation. An unnecessary prompt has been removed in the output from "bng
auxctl" when called by "non-tty" applications.

[009] - DBIx::Perlish 0.25
  by Grrrr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Grrrr/)
  Thu, May 10th 2007 05:55

About: The DBIx::Perlish module provides the ability to work with
databases supported by the DBI module using Perl's own syntax for the four
most common operations: SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and INSERT. By using
DBIx::Perlish, you can write most of your database queries using a
domain-specific language with Perl syntax. However, the module is not
intended to replace all use of SQL in your program. The DBIx::Perlish
module quite intentionally neither implements nor cares about database
administration tasks like schema design and management.

Changes: A bug concerning inherited database handles was fixed.

Text Editors :: Emacs

About: Easymacs is an easy-to-learn, one-size-fits-all configuration for
new users of GNU Emacs. It sets up key bindings that conform to a common
denominator of the Gnome/KDE/OS X/Microsoft Windows human interface
guidelines, and provides function-key bindings for other powerful Emacs
features. It is fully documented, and the new user can productively edit
text right away, without going through the Emacs tutorial. Many
commonly-used functions can be accessed without having to learn the
"chords" or multiple keystrokes that Emacs uses by default.

Documentation

About: The Goal of Hilbert II, which is in the tradition of Hilbert's
program, is the creation of a system that enables a working mathematician
to put theorems and proofs (in the formal language of predicate calculus)
into it. These proofs are automatically verified by a proof checker.
Because this system is not centrally administered and enables references
to any location on the Internet, a world wide mathematical knowledge base
could be built. Any proof of a theorem in this "mathematical web" could be
drilled down to the very elementary rules and axioms. To make it more than
a huge number of logical correct formulas, it also contains information in
"common mathematical language". Think of an incredible number of
mathematical textbooks with hyperlinks, and each of its proofs could be
verified by *Hilbert II*. For each theorem, the dependency of other
propositions, definitions, and axioms could be easily derived.

Changes: This release has a GUI window for transforming LaTeX formulas
into QEDEQ XML. Behind the scenes a huge refactoring took place. The
project has now a kernel structure. The kernel can be initialized and
offers methods for loading a module from the file system or out of the
Internet. The kernel buffers modules and keeps a log. The kernel is not
finished yet but the basic structure is there.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: MOSIX is a management system for Linux clusters and organizational
grids that provides a Single-System Image. In a MOSIX based system, there
is no need to modify or link applications with any library, copy files,
login to remote nodes, or even assign processes to different nodes; it is
all done automatically. Just "fork and forget", like in an SMP.

Changes: This release uses version 2.6.21.1 of the Linux kernel.

  Thu, May 10th 2007 02:37

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
Utilities

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: A bogus error message when aborting 'write script' was removed. A
color scheme was added for the BOINC project. A problem where not all
command line settings were written when executing the 'write script'
functionality was fixed.

[035] - ora2pg 4.4
  by Gilles DAROLD (http://freshmeat.net/users/darold/)
  Thu, May 10th 2007 02:33

Database

About: Ora2Pg is a Perl module to export an Oracle database schema to a
PostgreSQL compatible schema. It connects your Oracle database, extracts
its structure, and generates an SQL script that you can load into your
PostgreSQL database. It dumps the database schema (tables, views,
sequences, indexes, grants) with primary, unique, and foreign keys into
PostgreSQL syntax without editing the SQL code generated. It also dump
Oracle data into PostgreSQL DB as online process or into a file. You can
choose what columns can be exported for each table.

Changes: This release fixed several bugs and added configuration
directives that allow users to redefine data type export and set Oracle
database encoding. It also support the new Oracle data types TIMESTAMP,
BINARY_FLOAT, and BINARY_DOUBLE.

[036] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 5.21
  by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
  Thu, May 10th 2007 00:15

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into C,
C++, Objective-C, D, Java, or Ruby code. It allows the programmer to embed
actions at any point in a regular language, and to control non-determinism
in the resulting machines. It understands concatenation, union, kleene
star, subtraction, intersection, epsilon transitions, and various other
common operators. It also supports the construction of scanners and the
building of state machines using state charts. It can be used to create
very fast recognizers and parsers that are also robust.

Changes: Several bugs were fixed. The ability to embed the negative sense
of a condition was added. The user guide was improved. New condition
embedding syntax was added. The variable statement was improved. Error
handling was improved.

Software Development

About: Reptool is a reporting/printing tool. It is made up of two
components: libreptool, which manages source files that are the report's
definition, and produces the report/printout; and greptool, which visually
creates source files. It is based on glib, libxml, GTK+, cairo, pango, and
libgda.

Changes: The parser for the "source" attribute of text was added, so you
can have a text with fixed string, database values, and special values
(such as date/time or page number) mixed together. Integration with Gtk

Scientific/Engineering

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.

Changes: This release contains the first implementation of mathematical
transformation rules, a powerful feature that enables Frink to
symbolically manipulate mathematical expressions, simplify equations, and
solve equations. These changes help move Frink from just a programming
language and calculating tool into a full-fledged symbolic mathematical
package. The current syntax may change, but you can now define and apply
your own transformation rules to mathematical expressions.

[043] - UMLGraph 4.8
  by Diomidis Spinellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/diomidis/)
  Thu, May 10th 2007 11:07

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Software Development :: Documentation

About: UMLGraph facilitates the declarative specification and drawing of
UML class and sequence diagrams. One can specify a class design using the
Java syntax complemented by Javadoc tags. Running the UmlGraph doclet on
the specification generates a Graphviz diagram specification that can be
automatically processed to create Postscript, GIF, SVG, JPEG, fig, or
Framemaker drawings. Similarly, sequence diagrams are specified using
declarative pic macros and compiled with the GNU plotutils pic2plot
program into a PNG, PNM, (pseudo) GIF, SVG, AI, Postscript, CGM, FIG, PCL,
HPGL, Regis, or TEK drawing.

Changes: This version improves its invocation interface so that it can be
run directly as a jar file. It has support for sending results to the
standard output for direct piping into dot. The distribution includes an
example shell script and batch file for invoking UMLGraph.
