Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[005] - Clorox 0.1a
  by Daniel Myers (http://freshmeat.net/users/dsmcsail/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 05:19

About: Clorox is shared memory system for AJAX Web applications. Instead
of forcing the programmer to manually make requests to the server for new
data, Clorox presents them with the illusion of data structures shared
between the client and server. These data structures look exactly like
ordinary JavaScript objects, and they support flexible, user-defined
policies for data caching and prefetching. It thus provides better
performance than straightforward AJAX implementations with reduced
programmer effort.

Changes: A small bug was fixed to correct a problem with dim() methods.
The homepage URL was updated.

[006] - Cobbler 0.2.9
  by Michael DeHaan (http://freshmeat.net/users/mpdehaan/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 16:44

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: Cobbler is a provisioning configuration tool that enables
administrators to rapidly set up environments for (simultaneously)
provisioning PXE, installing Xen, and re-provisioning existing machines
("auto-kickstart"). Set up of a PXE server, once a very manual process, is
now greatly simplified. Cobbler also enables integrating Xen into a PXE
provisioning infrastructure. The application is designed for managing the
provisioning of thousands of machines or only a few. Extensive
documentation is provided in the accompanying manpages. Cobbler is easy to
use and has an accompanying Python API.

Changes: This is primarily a bugfix release, though one major feature is
being added. "cobbler import" can now handle importing mirrors over SSH as
well as the rsync protocol (rsyncd). This now works: "cobbler import
--mirror=foo@192.168.1.10:/distros --mirror-name=foo". Bugfixes are
primarily related to removing GIGO situations from both cobbler and koan,
and are covered in the changelog files.

[007] - Cream for Vim 0.37
  by digitect (http://freshmeat.net/users/digitect/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 09:33

Text Editors
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: Cream is a configuration of the famous Vim text editor that makes
it easier to use, like an Apple- or Windows-style text editor. It uses
Vim's own extensibility to improve menus, keyboard shortcuts, and editing
behavior. Cream seamlessly maintains Vim's insertmode to access all the
power of the original Vim plus many custom Cream extensions.

Changes: This is an incremental release and fixes some minor bugs. An
option was added to turn off the status line. Another addition is the
Slide Generator add-on. Relying on ImageMagick's convert utility, it
converts a directory of Web-compatible images (.jpg, .gif, and .png) into
a Web page index of small thumbnails that link to the full size image.

[008] - CyberTester 2 0.2.0
  by Alexander Yap (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexycyap/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 17:09

Education :: Testing

About: CyberTester is a Web-based application that was originally designed
to allow educators to create tests, exams, and assignments consisting of
multiple-choice questions and assign them to students for online testing.
Students can login to take these tests and review their results. It is
suitable for integrating into online education services. It uses Java
Enterprise Edition (with EJB 3) and runs on JBoss.

Changes: This release implements reordering of questions that are assigned
to a test with the administrator test editor. The Ant build script has been
changed to package all Web Java classes into a jar file, which is then put
into the WEB-INF/lib within the war file. There are unit tests using JBoss
Embeddable EJB3 container. This release adds INTEGER (single integer
answer) and DECIMAL (single decimal value answer) question types. Some
bugs have been fixed.

[009] - DaDaBIK 4.1 beta
  by Eugenio (http://freshmeat.net/users/eugenio/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 23:23

Database :: Front-Ends

About: DaDaBIK is a PHP application that allows you to easily create a
highly customizable Web interface for a database in order to search,
insert, update, and delete records; all you need do is specify a few
configuration parameters. MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MS SQL Server are
supported. It is available in several languages.

Changes: Form error handling was improved, so DaDaBIK will display the
form again, and the back button is no longer needed. Email notices were
added. Previous and next buttons were added in edit and detail views.
Administration pages are now protected by authentication. DaDaBIK now
remembers the last search executed on a table. It is now possible to
choose the number of result records displayed per page on the fly. It is
now possible to set an alias for each table. DaDaBIK now uses tinymce to
implement the rich_editor field type instead of htmlarea.

[017] - Go Awstats 1.0
  by Jean-Marc Liotier (http://freshmeat.net/users/jimfr/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 17:00

About: Go Awstats automates the production of Awstats Apache log reports
at a site where multiple virtual hosts exist. It always updates the
reports for the current month and the current year and only produces other
reports if they do not exist, which saves on CPU. The regeneration of a
report can be forced by simply erasing it.

Changes: A major year calculation error has been fixed that appeared when
the logs began to span more than two years. The author is now confident
that the whole thing now works as advertised, hence the bump to revision
1.0.

  by ak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imagero/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 16:48

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Imagero is a Java library for reading images and reading/editing
image metadata. Supported file types include BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG, JNG,
MNG, JPEG (including 12-bit grey), PSD, PBM, PGM, PPM, TGA, EPS, EPSI, and
EPSF. The following RAW file types are also supported, at least partially:
MRW, CRW, NEF, DCR, and DNG. It can read thumbnails, read metadata (IPTC,
EXIF, and XMP), edit metadata, get image width and height, get the number
of images contained in a file, define an area to read, add a
ProgressListener, choose an image channel to read, set a scale factor, set
subsampling (JPEG only), read an image (or channel) directly into an array
or BufferedImage, use ICC Profiles for accurate color converting, and
split and merge TIFF files.

Changes: Inserting Marker blocks to JPEG files. Vertical merging (stitch)
of TIFF files. Data handling was significantly changed: if BufferedImage
is requested (for Java 1.2 or higher), then the returned image has the
same bit depth as the original on disc. Otherwise, if an image has less
than 8 bits per pixel, it is converted to 8 BPP. Many bugfixes were made.

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: LibMySequoia provides an alternative library for MySQL C client
library (libmysqlclient.so) to benefit from the Sequoia high availability
and performance scalability clustering solution. Native MySQL client
programs can use the Sequoia clustering solution without changing any line
of code in the application. The benefit of this solution is that native C
applications, PHP, Perl, and Python programs using the MySQL C API
interface now can transparently connect to a Sequoia cluster.

[022] - MonAMI 0.6
  by PaulM (http://freshmeat.net/users/paulmillar/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 05:03

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: MonAMI aims to be a standard place for monitoring the availability
and performance of services. It can talk to many different monitoring
systems while remaining easy to configure. It has a plugin structure,
making it easy to add new things to monitor or to integrate with new
monitoring systems.

Changes: With this release, MonAMI now uses an asynchronous,
multi-threaded core, which supports "on-demand" monitoring. The new
ksysguard reporting plugin is the first to use on-demand monitoring. The
KSysguard GUI, once connected, can choose what to monitor dynamically.
When finished, the GUI will disconnect and the corresponding monitoring
will stop. Two new monitoring plugins are included with this release: DPM
and dCache. These are two storage solutions that implement the Grid "SRM"
storage interface.

[023] - Mr. Persister 3.5.9-beta
  by Jakob Jenkov (http://freshmeat.net/users/jjenkov/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 06:44

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Mr. Persister is a POJO persistence API for Java. The main focus of
Mr. Persister is to handle all the trivial JDBC work, and leave the
non-trivial parts up to you. It uses plain SQL as the query language, it
can auto-map objects to the database, and it can generate SQL for a lot of
trivial tasks by itself (such as insert, update, and delete). Mr. Persister
also has support for easy batch updates of collections of objects,
connection and transaction handling, and many other features.

Changes: Mr. Persister now has a JDBC DAO and a Map DAO too. The JDBC DAO
makes it easier for users to do ordinary custom JDBC without having to
worry about all the details. The Map DAO makes it easy to read records
into Maps or Lists of Maps. This can be handy for dynamic reporting
purposes. You can even mix the use of the various DAOs. For instance, use
the Map DAO or Generic DAO from inside a JDBC DAO call.

  by bensond (http://freshmeat.net/users/BessyBoo/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 06:45

Information Management
Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based

About: mxGraph is a JavaScript library that uses built-in browser
capabilities to provide an interactive drawing and diagramming solution.
Target applications are Web based applications that require workflow/BPM,
diagram, network, or general graph editing to be available in-place on a
Web page.

Changes: This release adds a DHTML option that provides 80-150% speed
improvements over VML on Internet Explorer in core visualization features.
The DHTML may still be mixed with VML for areas where DHTML is functionally
limited. Firefox 2 and Minefield 3 are new browsers supported. Internet
Explorer 7 did not require any changes to work correctly. An online
organisation chart editing application has been added as an example with
automatic node positioning. A number of bugfixes and minor features were
also added.

  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 09:27

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Benchmark
System :: Diagnostics

About: MyVoIPSpeed Server very accurately measures the quality and
performance of Internet connections for Voice over IP (VoIP) usage by
simulating UDP VoIP sessions between a server and browser clients.
Connections are tested for jitter, packet loss and bandwidth consistency.
Download and upload bandwidth speeds are also measured. Reported metrics
include max pause, round trip time, and QOS (bandwidth consistency). The
Professional version includes a performance database that records all
bandwidth test results, session ID tracking, socket-to-socket speed
testing, and HTTP speed testing. The NOC Edition can perform automated
testing from one or more remote locations, providing information for
network operation centers to analyze VoIP quality, network quality and
overall performance. As a Java applet, MyVoIPSpeed Server is easily
incorporated into Web pages.

Changes: This update adds an option to suppress the display of client HTTP
header information.

[026] - NuFW 2.0.10 (Stable)
  by regit (http://freshmeat.net/users/regit/)
  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 05:17

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: NuFW is an authentication firewall suite: the gateway authorizes a
packet depending on which remote user has sent it. It can also set quality
of service on a per-user basis and log user activities into a SQL database.
Furthermore, it can use an external authentication source such as an LDAP
directory and be the key of a Single Sign On solution.

Changes: This is a maintenance release which mainly fixes a bug in the
LDAP module. Applications with parentheses in their names were causing a
failure during the search of the ACLs in the LDAP directory. Due to this
search failure, relative packets were dropped even if they matched an
ACCEPT ACL.

[037] - SipUnit 0.0.5b

  Tue, Oct 24th 2006 23:30

Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
Internet

About: SipUnit provides a class library that allows software developers to
create automated unit tests for SIP applications. Session Initiation
Protocol (SIP) is widely used for providing telephone services over the
Internet. SipUnit extends the JUnit framework to incorporate SIP-specific
assertions, and it provides a high-level API for performing the SIP
operations needed to interact with or invoke a test target. A test program
using the SipUnit API is written in Java and acts as a network element that
sends/receives SIP requests and responses.

Changes: High level class methods were enhanced to allow complete control
over outbound request/response content by incorporating additional method
signatures that take body/header parameters. The final release (version
1.2) of the SIP stack reference implementation published by National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was incorporated.
Miscellaneous bugs were fixed.

About: Bazaar is a simple decentralized revision control system.
Decentralized revision control systems give users the ability to branch
remote repositories to a local context. Users can commit to local branches
without requiring special permission from the branches that they branched
from.

Changes: This release continues to improve performance and polish. The
startup time of lazy imports was improved by as much as 50%. There is
still room for improvement, but the foundation has been laid. Dotted
revision numbers were implemented, so it is now possible to reference
merged revisions by a short numbered identifier such as "bzr diff -r
1.2.1..1.2.3". Support was added for "bzr+http://", which allows
communicating with the bzr smart server over an HTTP connection.
