Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

  Mon, Oct 23rd 2006 00:39

Communications
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: Channel is a C++ template framework for distributed message passing
and event dispatching. Its major components (message IDs, routing
algorithms...) are highly configurable as template parameters. As a
namespace shared by peer threads, channels support publish/subscribe scope
control, message filtering, and translation.

Changes: An initial build was created on WindowsXP with Visual C++ 2005
Express. Most library code and samples were built, tested, and worked
correctly, excepting only the sample that uses a shared-memory message
queue. A wrapper executor was written to use Philipp Henkel's threadpool
library as executors. Choice/join arbiters were reworked and implemented
in both synchronous and asynchronous forms. Simple queue classes were
added. More documentation was added, and some bugs were fixed.

[016] - DynAlbum 1.5
  by Steve Holland (http://freshmeat.net/users/sdh4/)
  Mon, Oct 23rd 2006 10:46

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: Dynalbum is a fully dynamic automatic Web photo album generator.
The album includes an index page with thumbnails, navigation tools on each
album page, and four sizes of each picture. The entire album is dynamically
generated from a directory of JPEGs, TIFFs, PNGs, and GIFs when it is
accessed. Unlike other photo album generators, it doesn't clutter files
with thumbnails and static HTML. It generates each page and each scaled
image (including thumbnails) dynamically every time it is accessed. This
means that there's no need to keep static copies of anything but the
original pictures.

Changes: This version generates multi-page image indexes, now has proper
directory sorting, and will dynamically generate ZIP archives as well as
tar.gz archives.

  Mon, Oct 23rd 2006 00:42

System :: Benchmark
System :: Filesystems

About: fio is an I/O tool meant to be used both for benchmark and
stress/hardware verification. It has support for 6 different types of I/O
engines (sync, mmap, libaio, posixaio, SG v3, splice), I/O priorities (for
newer Linux kernels), rate I/O, forked or threaded jobs, and much more. It
can work on block devices as well as files. fio accepts job descriptions
in a simple-to-understand text format. Several example job files are
included. fio displays all sorts of I/O performance information, such as
completion and submission latencies (avg/mean/deviation), bandwidth stats,
CPU, and disk utilization, and more. It supports Linux, FreeBSD, and
OpenSolaris.

Changes: Basic support was added for a CPU cycler eater job. Splice
compile problems on newer Linux versions were fixed. IO engines were
seperated into loadable modules to support out-of-tree engines. More than
one file per thread/process is supported. The main file was split up into
more helper files. IO verification was improved. The -l/-w latency and
bandwidth log options were added as configuration entries. This version
contains lots of cleanups and little features, as well as many bugfixes.

architectures currently supported are i386 and x86-64.

Changes: A minimal and basic SMGRTL was started. New Bliss version, 0.210,
is available. The increase in version number is mainly due to the move to
the 4.1.1 backend. System services for capabilities and affinity were
added, but are yet untested. Exe$nampid now does privilege checking. Bliss
bug fixes are noted in the Bliss HOWTO. System service dclast did not set
access mode. In i386, PAL was missing user mode in PSL when going to user
mode.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Raptor is a C library providing a set of parsers and serializers
for Resource Description Framework (RDF) triples by parsing syntaxes into
RDF triples and serializing triples into a syntax. The parsers support
RDF/XML, N-Triples, and Turtle and via RSS tag soup: XML RSS, Atom 0.3,
and Atom 1.0. The serializers support RDF/XML (3 flavours), N-Triples, RSS
1.0, and Atom 1.0. Raptor handles RDF/XML as used by RDF applications such
as RSS 1.0, FOAF, DOAP, Dublin Core, and OWL. It can use either expat or
libxml2 for XML parsing, libcurl when available for URI retrieval, and is
portable to many POSIX systems.

Changes: A memory leak was fixed in the XML writer. Other minor
improvements and fixes were made to the tutorial, configuration, and build
system.

  Mon, Oct 23rd 2006 13:45

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The bigInteger library was improved to support modulo, power and
several comparisons (<, >, <=, and >=). Test cases for incr, decr, modulo,
power, and compare were added to the chkbig.sd7 program. The compiler was
improved to support the new bigInteger functionality.

About: Splunk organizes and makes sense of any type of machine data,
including Web servers, application servers, email servers, databases, and
network devices. It uses algorithms that dynamically discover event
relationships across diverse domains of machine data and build a
searchable Web of events to trace the real behavior of running systems. A
Splunk server can optionally work with Splunk.com, allowing users in
different organizations to participate in a global troubleshooting
community and share knowledge about common events and problems while
preserving data privacy.

Changes: Distributed search: users can now search across multiple Splunk
servers from a single Web or command line interface. A simplified
configuration format: name-value pairs in stanzas replace the old XML
structures to configure. Hosts can be tagged. Major indexing and search
performance improvements, and splunk indexes now take up 40% less disk

Changes: A small problem with moving files from a folder to another that
has an apostrophe in its name has been fixed. The -B parameter has been
added to nmblookup. A special character that was used in IE to avoid
loading an extra graphic has been removed, because it caused non-English
character sets to not load properly. An error in Mac OS Firefox browsers
that would make downloads start twice has been fixed. Pattern matching for

  by Andreas Steffen (http://freshmeat.net/users/asteffen/)
  Mon, Oct 23rd 2006 00:18

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It interoperates with most other IPsec-based VPN
products. It is a descendant of the discontinued FreeS/WAN project. The
focus of the strongSwan project is on strong authentication mechanisms
using X.509 public key certificates and optional secure storage of private
keys on smartcards through a standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique
feature is the use of X.509 attribute certificates to implement advanced
access control schemes based on group memberships.

Changes: The implementation of the IKE Mode Config push mode allows
interoperability with Cisco VPN gateways. By setting "modeconfig=push",
strongSwan will wait for the peer to push down a virtual IP address that
can be used within an IPsec tunnel. The default value of the new keyword
is "modeconfig=pull". The command "ipsec statusall" now shows "DPD active"
for all ISAKMP Security Associations that are under active Dead Peer
Detection control.

[085] - zeroer 0.1
  by Emanuel Haupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/ehaupt/)

System :: Filesystems

About: The zeroer utility can be used to wipe empty space on a disk. In
contrary to dd, zeroer does not wipe existing files on a partition. It
overwrites the unallocated disk spa ce around existing files, which means
that deleted files cannot be restored after processing a certain partition
with zeroer. The utility's principle consists in writing huge zero-padded
memory blocks to a file. To a certain extent, this works similar to dd,
but zeroer dynamically reduces the blockwriter's buffer size when the
filesystem is going to be full.
