[006] - Avango 1.0.0
  by Jürgen Wind (http://freshmeat.net/users/jogo_sf/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 20:18

About: AVANGO is an object-oriented framework for the development of
distributed, interactive VE (Virtual Environments) applications. Data
distribution is achieved by transparent replication of a shared scene
graph among the participating processes of a distributed application. A
sophisticated group communication system is used to guarantee state
consistency even in the presence of late joining and leaving processes.
The familiar dataflow graph found in modern stand-alone 3D-application
toolkits extends nicely to the distributed case.

Changes: In this major bugfix release, several bugs concerning the
distribution layer and scripting were fixed.

[007] - Axiomatic Multi-Platform C 1.3.4
  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 03:58

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code. It is useful for writing
new applications using existing C skill-sets and porting C programs.

Changes: Pointer to struct variables may now be accessed using array
references.

[011] - bpkg 0.4
  by Alec Thomas (http://freshmeat.net/users/alecthomas/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 20:19

System :: Archiving :: Packaging

About: bpkg is a utility that tries to simplify the process of trying out
new programs from source. For most packages, this can be as simple as
"bpkg <url or tarball>". bpkg will download, extract, configure, compile,
install, generate a package in your system's native format, and finally
integrate that package into your system's packaging system so that you can
remove it cleanly. It has auto-detection for Arch Linux, Slackware, Red
Hat, Gentoo, and SuSE (though not all packaging back-ends are complete).
bpkg is not intended as a replacement for normal packaging utilities.

Changes: Python packages are now always built with -f. A bug with self
packaging was fixed. A --md5=<sum> argument was added for verifying the
MD5 sum of a source file after download. The Python version is now
extracted from setup.py. Jamfile support was added.

[013] - C++ Machine Objects 0.8.1
  by Eduard Hiti (http://freshmeat.net/users/zxmar05/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 07:21

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Machine Objects class library supports a subset of the UML
statechart notation for implementing hierarchical state machines in
straight C++, similar in spirit to the GoF "State" design pattern. The
currently supported features are hierarchical states, entry and exit
actions, state histories, and state variables.

Changes: MSVC6 is now supported. The "clearHistoryDeep" method was added
to clear the history of state and substates.

Utilities

About: CaseRePort is a tool to find filename case inconsistencies in the
source tree. It may be useful for porting applications in any programming
language from a case-insensitive (like Windows) to a case-sensitive (like
Linux) run-time environments. It is very fast: searching the Linux kernel
sources takes only 2 minutes.

Changes: This release has a GUI. In addition to the command line jar, you
can now download an Eclipse plugin.

[015] - ccontrol 0.6
  by Rusty Russell (http://freshmeat.net/users/rustyq/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 21:50

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: The ccontrol program takes over the roles of the compiler and
linker, and reads a configuration file to decide what to do before
invoking them. This is particularly useful for centralized control over
commands and options, such as enabling distcc(1) and ccache(1).

Changes: Response to config file changes is now faster. distc++-hosts are
supported for C++ compilation and more parallelism control. Minor tweaks
were done.

[018] - Crossroads Load Balancer 0.20
  by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 04:00

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking

About: Crossroads is a load balance and failover utility for TCP-based
services. It is a daemon program running in userspace and features
extensive configurability, polling of backends using "wakeup calls",
detailed status reporting, "hooks" for special actions when backend calls
fail, and more. It is service-independent; it is usable for HTTP(S), SSH,
SMTP, DNS, MySQL, etc.

Changes: This release has two functionality changes. Session durations are
measured with microsecond accuracy (instead of non-fractional seconds), so
that "buduration" load balancing is more precise. A new dispatch mode was
implemented: "bysessions", which chooses the back end with the fewest
concurrent sessions (modified by weights, if appropriate).

Information Management

About: CuteFlow is a Web-based document circulation tool. Users are able
to define "documents", which are sent step-by-step to every user in a
list. It provides an electronic method for doing internal document
circulations.

Changes: Support for Polish and Japanese was added. Some bugfixes were
made in the Italian language. You can now choose the language from the
login page. If you open an email message with a deleted circulation, there
will be a warning. Some bugs in the circulation view were fixed. A new
configuration switch, $FILTER_AUTO_REGEX_WORDSTART, was added. If this is
set to true, the filter matches only words that start with the filter.
Some smaller bugs were fixed.

[025] - Distributed Concurrent Versioning System 1.0.2
  by elego Software Solutions GmbH (http://freshmeat.net/users/elego/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 07:34

Software Development :: Version Control
Software Development :: Version Control :: CVS

About: The Distributed Concurrent Versioning System (DCVS) extends the
well-known version control system CVS and the file distribution and
synchronization program CVSup with functionality to distribute CVS
repositories with local lines of development and handle synchronization of
the distributed repositories automatically in the background. Development
lines (branches) are owned by a repository server, repository servers
efficiently update each other via CVSup, and CVS ensures correct server
use on checkin and branch creation.

Changes: Since release 1.0, dcvs setup has become much easier. Operating
system specific installation packages for all supported OSes are
available. Standard CVS clients and IDEs can be used. Snapshots have been
added as independent objects storing bound configurations. Thus snapshots
are a useful means, especially for release management. Change sets provide
better support for release engineering and process management. A change set
contains a set of changes stored as independent object which can be applied
to any development line across server boundaries. CVS 1.12.12 has been
imported to DCVS 1.0.

[034] - HTTP client request class 2005.12.07
  by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 21:42

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: HTTP client is a PHP class to make HTTP requests. It can submit
requests via a proxy server, establish secure connections (HTTPS) via a
proxy server, PHP with OpenSSL support, or the Curl library with optional
SSL client certificates. It supports HTTP authentication directly or via
proxy using the SASL library, like HTTP Basic, HTTP Digest, and NTLM
(Windows or Samba). It submits POST requests with user-defined form
values, file uploading, or with user-defined request bodies. It retrieves
the HTTP response headers and body data separately. It handles cookies and
automatic redirection handling.

Changes: The HTTP POST requests now send the normal form field values
before any files to make sure HTTP servers using PHP get the
MAX_UPLOAD_SIZE setting value. The class no longer returns an error when
the server closes the connection and it does not specify the content
length but specified that the connection would be closed in the end.

[039] - JCards 6.0.0 alpha 1 (Desktop Version)
  by Nick Sydenham (http://freshmeat.net/users/nsydenham/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 08:55

Database
Information Management :: Records Management

About: JCards is a free Java application designed to store and manage data
in any format that the user defines. Instead of having multiple
applications/spreadsheets to manage passwords, tasks, shopping lists,
etc., JCards allows the user to define a database that contains the fields
they want. This is accomplished via an easy to use interface that requires
no understanding of SQL or any other database jargon. JCards was initially
developed for the Sharp Zaurus SL-5x00 PDA, but will run on any desktop or
PDA that has a 1.1 or above version of the Java Virtual Machine on it. The
advantage of this is that the user can use the same application on the PDA
and desktop to manage their data.

Changes: Version 6 is now in development and is a complete rewrite of the
codebase to use many of the features expected in a modern desktop
application. For this reason, version 6 is a desktop only release and will
not run on PDAs. However, you do get an easier to use GUI, printing
support, image files, and more.

[042] - libebt 1.1.0
  by Ciaran McCreesh (http://freshmeat.net/users/ciaranm/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 20:21

About: The libebt library provides a clean way of getting human-readable
backtrace messages in C++. It uses the RAII (resource acquisition is
initialization) idiom to manage backtrace stack items without requiring
macros, control structures, or an external debugger.

Changes: The spelling of 'backtracable' was replaced with the more obvious
'backtraceable'. For backwards compatibility, the
libebt/libebt_backtracable.hh header is still available, and the
libebt::Backtracable<> class template is now a wrapper for
libebt::Backtraceable<>. All deprecated spellings are marked with

  by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 08:04

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with event
updates using fam), XML (mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb,
LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA generators
include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: xalan 1.10 compatability was added. Minor gcc 4.0.2 code cleanup
was done. The remembrance:// filesystem and branchfs were added. The
ferris-redirect client was added for redirection to virtual files.
ferris-bash-exec.sh was added to allow bash script execution from virtual
files. myrdf handling was updated. Updating myrdf is now implicitly
handled during cp and mv operations. ferris-rdf-smush-new-url and
ferris-rdf-smush-union-urls clients were added. Updates were made to
FerrisFileActions, fcompress, and ferris-find.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: libferrisstreams is a collection of base classes for custom
std::basic_streambuf subclasses, SigC signals fired when streambuf
objects are about to be deleted, relative URL handling, easy reference
counting on streambuf objects, a collection of IOStreams which
complement the standard ones on offer (MakeMemoryIOStream(),
MakeFdIOStream(),  MakeHoleyOStream(), MakeLimitingIStream(), and
MakeProxyStream()), and additions for UNIX semantics. For example a file
stream can be created using o_mmap|o_mseq when one wants a memory mapped
file to be used an madvise(2) that access to that area will be sequential.

Changes: fcnull() was updated to use a static fd to /dev/null. radixdump()
no longer defaults to comma seperating its data after 4 bytes. The
MakeFIFO() call was added, allowing control over opening and mode of the
new fifo.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The page navigation (pagination) of lists with records from a
(MySQL) database is often used on a lot of dynamic Web sites. MyPagina is
extremely easy to use in your existing application: just use your own SQL
statement, and you get information like the result set (you need this for
later output), page navigation links, and the (current) number of records.
While using this class, all other query string parts are included inside
the page links. An example database table (with data) is included.

Changes: The link text (and the new image function) for the forward and
backward links will be created with the new method
build_back_or_forward(). Because there is no need for them anymore, the
variables str_forward and str_backward were removed. Check the example
file for the possibility to use images in place of strings for the back
and forward navigation and the modified navigation() method.

  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 23:31

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries

About: NeatUpload allows ASP.NET developers to stream uploaded files to
disk and allows users to monitor upload progress. It works under Mono's
XSP/mod_mono as well as Microsoft's ASP.NET implementation and features
two custom controls. InputFile allows the user to select a file to upload
and ProgressBar displays the upload progress either inline or in a popup.
ProgressBar even allows users without JavaScript to see upload progress.

Changes: This release fixes a bug where chunked requests were rejected
with a "length required" error. The fix allows such uploads but leaves the
progress display blank while the upload is occuring because it isn't
possible to compute the percentage complete and time remaining without
knowing the total size of the request.

[065] - pmacct 0.9.5
  by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
  Wed, Dec 7th 2005 07:14

Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: pmacct is a small set of IPv4/IPv6 accounting and aggregation
tools. A pluggable architecture allows you to store collected traffic data
into memory tables or SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite 3.x) databases. It
supports fully customizable historical data breakdown, flow sampling,
filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Libpcap, NetFlow
v1/v5/v7/v8/v9, and sFlow v2/v4/v5 are supported, both unicast and
multicast. Also, a client program makes it easy to export data to tools
like RRDtool, GNUPlot, Net-SNMP, MRTG, and Cacti.

Changes: A fully featured SQLite plugin has been introduced. The plugin is
LOCK-based and supports the "recovery mode" via an alternate database
action. It is especially suitable for tiny and embedded environments. A
new common SQL layer has been introduced: it's largely callback-based and
results in a major architectural change by sitting below the specific SQL
code. A bug concerning the setup of insert callback functions for summed
IPv6 traffic has been fixed. A bug concerning the handling of MPLS labels
has been fixed in pmacctd.

features including shopping cart, subscriptions, forums, photo galleries,
FAQs, link lists, blogs, SQL reports, a Web services interface, and a very
configurable user privilege and profiling system.

Printing

About: Xpdf is a viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) files. (These
are also sometimes also called 'Acrobat' files, from the name of Adobe's
PDF software.) The Xpdf project also includes a PDF text extractor,
PDF-to-PostScript converter, and various other utilities. It runs under
the X Window System on UNIX, VMS, and OS/2. The non-X components (pdftops,
pdftotext, etc.) also run on Win32 systems, and should run on pretty much
any system with a decent C++ compiler. Xpdf is designed to be small and
efficient. It can use Type 1 and TrueType fonts.

Changes: This release fixes several security holes as reported in
iDEFENSE's advisory CAN-2005-3193. An attacker could construct a carefully
crafted PDF file that could cause Xpdf to crash or possibly execute
arbitrary code when opened.

[086] - Z-machine Preservation Project 0.72 final
  by Wei-ju Wu (http://freshmeat.net/users/weiju/)

Games/Entertainment
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: The Z-machine Preservation Project is a Java implementation of the
Z-machine (Java version >= 5 is required). The project goal is to provide
a Z-code interpreter in Java that conforms to the standard and is easy to
comprehend, maintain, and extend. Architecturally, it consists of a
Z-machine core system that is independent of a particular user interface
technology. The core system's behaviour is documented and verified through
its test cases.

Changes: This is mainly a bugfix and clean up release. Several tests were
added to the suite, and screen handling was modified according to the
experiences with the games run in the integration tests. It was verified
that several V3 and V4 games can be started ("Bureaucracy", "Trinity", "A
Mind Forever Voyaging", "Plundered Hearts", and "Seastalker"). Development
will now continue to support version 5 story files.
