[001] - abcm2ps 4.11.5 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Wed, Sep 14th 2005 03:45

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: Several layout bugs were fixed.

Security

About: airfinder helps to locate a specific wireless MAC address
physically, or at least to detect the presence of a specific MAC address.
It works better with a directional antenna.

Changes: The program now updates every 400ms. A makefile is included. The
#include directives in the code were cleaned up.

Communications :: File Sharing

About: Anatomic P2P is an implementation of a protocol designed to
decentralize BitTorrent. It is based on a network of "supertrackers" or
"supernodes" that users query and which route users to the correct
tracker(s). A modified tracker and client are used, and "old" clients can
still use the network. The technology is based on the Gnutella GWebCache
system.

[004] - Apache SpamAssassin 3.1.0
  by Justin Mason (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmason/)
  Wed, Sep 14th 2005 21:56

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules

About: Apache SpamAssassin is an extensible email filter that is used to
identify spam. Once identified, the mail can then be optionally tagged as
spam for later filtering. It provides a command line tool to perform
filtering, a client-server system to filter large volumes of mail, and
Mail::SpamAssassin, a set of Perl modules allowing Apache SpamAssassin to
be used in a wide variety of email systems.

Changes: A more efficient Apache preforking algorithm was adopted.
PostgreSQL, MySQL 4.1+, and local SDBM file Bayes storage modules were
added. SQL storage is now recommended for Bayes. New DomainKeys,
MIMEHeader, WhiteListSubject, and ReplaceTags plugins were added. Razor2
and DCC are now disabled by default due to a change in licenses. DNSBL
lookups and other DNS operations are now more efficient.

Internet
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking

About: Avahi is a framework for Multicast DNS Service Discovery on Linux.
It allows programs to publish and discover services and hosts running on a
local network with no specific configuration. For example, you can plug
into a network and instantly find printers to print to, files to look at,
and people to talk to.

Changes: This release adds the Mono binding "avahi-sharp". A cookie is
included in all published services, which allows the software to reliably
determine if a service is the same as another. An API to determine if
services are local has been added. There is better support for threading
with AvahiSimplePoll.

[007] - Biferno 1.2
  by Valerio Ferrucci (http://freshmeat.net/users/valfer/)
  Wed, Sep 14th 2005 04:45

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Biferno is a new generation object-oriented Web scripting language
that allows developers the rapid implementation of dynamic Web applications
and of sites that offer a high degree of user interactivity. It is
implemented as a Web server add-on module that allows dynamic generation
of HTML pages; the result of the processing of the Biferno code by the
server determines the page content. A Biferno script is a server-side
script. It is also an "HTML-embedded" language: scripts can be written in
pure Biferno language, but can also contain HTML code segments between
Biferno code blocks. Extensive documentation for the language and the
runtime system is available.

Changes: This version includes some enhancements and bugfixes. The SMTP
code was modified to allow SMTP authentication and attachments on emails.
The IsEMail method of the string class has been updated. Support for
prepared queries has been added to the mysql extension. Another version of
the Apache module compatible with the Linux Trustix distribution has been
added. Many bugs have been fixed and error reports were improved. Users
are strongly encouraged to install this update.

[008] - Big Faceless PDF Library 2.5.2

(http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
  Wed, Sep 14th 2005 21:45

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.

Changes: RGBA and CMYK were added as available color models for
PDFParser.writeTIFF(). PagePainter.setBackground() was added to enable
PDFs to be rendered to backgrounds other than opaque white. The viewer
component on Unix was fixed. Some more Java 1.4 dependencies were removed.
The PagePainter class can now run under Java 1.3 on Unix and Windows, which
means converting PDFs to bitmap images (e.g. TIFF) or drawing to an
existing Graphics2D object will work under 1.3. Creating digital
signatures with no annotations and when flattening some forms was fixed.

[012] - ccbuild 1.3.3
  by A. Bram Neijt (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmm/)
  Wed, Sep 14th 2005 10:26

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: ccbuild is like a dynamic Makefile. ccbuild finds all programs in
the current directory (containing "int main") and builds them. For this,
it reads the C++ sources and looks at all local and global includes. All
C++ files surrounding local includes are considered objects for the main
program. The global includes lead to extra compiler arguments using a
configuration file. ccbuild splits these arguments for compilation and
linking, keeping the linking arguments back for later use. It should allow
development without any scripting and only simple reusable configuration.
Deployment and distribution should still be done with other tools. It can
create simple Makefiles, A-A-P files, and graph dependencies using DOT
(graphviz) graphs.

Changes: The makefile command now outputs the right output parameter (next
to the source).

About: Cedar Backup is a Python package that supports backups of files on
local and remote hosts to CD-R or CD-RW media over a secure network
connection. Cedar Backup also includes extensions that understand how to
back up MySQL databases and Subversion repositories, and it can be easily
extended to support other data sources, as well. The package is focused
around weekly backups to a single disc, with the expectation that the disc
will be changed or overwritten at the beginning of each week.

Changes: This release is focused around a wide-ranging set of
enhancements, bugfixes, and documentation updates. The list of changes is
fairly large, although not much of the core functionality was touched.

About: CxxPrep converts C++ source files to an unambiguous dialect of C++
that is much easier to parse accurately. It is intended to be used as the
frontend to other software analysis systems where the emphasis is not upon
developing a sophisticated, context-dependent parser such as that required
by C++, but rather on analyzing and transforming a parsed source file. A
TXL Grammar for the unambiguous dialect and a tool for reversing the
transformation are included.

[029] - FlatFrag 0.3
  by Johannes Kuhlmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/jkuhlmann/)
  Wed, Sep 14th 2005 15:29

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: FlatFrag is a multiplayer action shooter game. With its deathmatch
fights, it strives to be an entertaining arcade-style experience. The game
is played from a bird's eye view and contains some 3D effects in order to
make it not seem too flat. Currently, only the game mode deathmatch is
available, but others will probably be developed in the future. The game
has been built from scratch, though a few important libraries were used in
the process. For example, OpenGL is used for fast 3D graphics, and SDL
provides the game with many cross-platform functions.

Changes: Quite a few features have been added and a few severe bugs were
fixed. Players are now able to use cars, tanks, and stationary guns. The
armory has been extended to 14 different weapons, including some funny
ones like the Drunkenizer. Visual enhancements include dynamic lighting,
better explosions, and some nice fire effects. In order to provide more
fun for the human players it is now possible to fight against bots. The
collision detection system has been totally rewritten to allow for easier
movement, which makes it possible to slide on walls, for example.

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: This release adds a new driver for Google Blog Search. It also
improves the existing Google Groups driver, adding date range query
support. The Google Web driver has been fixed in order to strip
redirections from URLs.

[053] - Midgard Components Framework 2.5.1 (Development)

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: The Midgard Components Framework (also called MidCOM) is an
advanced component architecture which extends the Midgard Web content
management framework. It provides mechanisms for building a Web site using
components without much need for writing code to glue all this together.
The administration site gets built automatically by using those
components. Goodies like a caching engine and subrequests make site
building even easier.

Changes: Most system pages (such as errors and login prompts) have been
made customizable. Permalinks got their own service to decouple them from
the main site navigation. All available components now provide a manifest
file which allows processing components without actually loading them
(this results in a huge performance improvement). In addition, there have
been many optimizations and fixes in the framework.

About: MKDoc is a Web site building, serving, and content management tool
that was designed to encourage the use of good information architecture
and the production of accessible Web sites. It provides different ways for
the public to interact with and navigate between documents, including a
sitemap, search facility, Dublin Core XML/RDF metadata, and printer
versions of pages. All management, document creation, editing, and
organizing is done via a Web browser, and the look is controlled using
Petal templates. Unicode/UTF-8 is used to support all languages, including
right-to-left languages.

Changes: This is a feature release that adds new functionality as well as
fixing many minor bugs. New user-group functionality allows restricted
areas and multiple groups of users. Headlines and event listings can now
just show documents matching particular audience categories. Site owners
can generate spreadsheet style reports on user accounts. Uploaded files
have icons indicating their file-type. The new Dynamic Sitemap plugin is
faster and shows more information. A new plugin allows users to post
comments to documents.

Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: Nautilus Actions is an extension for Nautilus, the GNOME file
manager, which allows you to configure programs to be launched on files
selected in the Nautilus interface. Each time you right-click on one or
several selected files in Nautilus, Nautilus Actions will parse its
configuration files to see if a program has been set for this selection.
If one has been set, it will add an item to the menu that allows you to
execute the program on the selected files.

Changes: The possibility to add several file patterns to match the
selected files or folders has been added. In NACT, the several patterns
must be given separated by semi-colons. Support for internationalization
has been added with French and German localizations. The config files also
support localization with the xml:lang attribute for the label and the
tooltip of each actions. The nautilus icon is now displayed again in the
Preferences menu. Several other little bugs and visual problems have been
fixed.

[066] - pmacct 0.9.2
  by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
  Wed, Sep 14th 2005 21:59

Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: pmacct is a small set of IPv4/IPv6 accounting and aggregation
tools. Aggregation of IP traffic revolves around the concept of primitives
(VLAN id, source and destination MAC addresses, IP addresses, networks, AS
numbers, ports, ToS field, and IP protocol are supported) that may be
employed alone or arbitrarily combined with others to form complex
aggregation methods. It supports custom historical breakdown, packet
sampling, filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Libpcap
(and promiscuous mode if required), NetFlow v1/v5/v7/v8/v9, and sFlow
v2/v4/v5 are supported.

Changes: The 'sql_preprocess' tier now has two new keywords: 'usrf', which
applies a generic uniform renormalization factor to the counters, and
'adjb', which adds (or subtracts) a fixed value to the bytes counter
(which is useful for integrating link layer, LLC, etc. sizes). A new
'--enable-64bit' configuration switch compiles the package with 64-bit
byte, packet, and flow counters instead of 32-bit. The sampling algorithm
endorsed by the 'sampling_rate' feature was enhanced to a simple randomic
one. Some compiler warnings were removed and minor code cleanups were
made.

About: Ratoximus is a backend for rating your music on the fly. When a
good song comes up on your playlist, you can mark it up to your favorites,
and when you just can't stand a song, you can blacklist it. A cleanlist is
generated based on a preselected list, taking out the blacklisted entries.
It includes a simple interactive frontend, and tips to other methods.

Changes: The biggest change is the addition of the quick mode that cuts
processing time down to a fraction of normal operation, at the cost of
losing real-time modifications (only useful on a very slow machine with a
very large playlist; most users wont notice the difference nor need this
feature). Other changes include a working installer with conf adjusting,
updated and cleaned up documentation, and various bugfixes. A very simple

[083] - XOM 1.1b3

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT

About: XOM is an XML object model. It is a tree-based API for processing
XML with Java that simultaneously supports streaming. In many use-cases,
it can process arbitrarily large documents with effectively constant
memory sizes. It strives for correctness, simplicity, and performance, in
that order. XOM supports XSLT, Canonical XML, and XInclude.

Changes: The API is now considered to be stable, and probably won't change
before 1.1 final. Beta 3 focuses on performance. This release is measurably
faster than beta 2 for many common operations, and probably at least twice
as fast as XOM 1.0.
