  Tue, Sep 13th 2005 23:12

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Build Interceptor captures the .i files of any project while it is
built from source using the gcc toolchain. Anyone who has tried this on a
large scale will find out that it is non-trivial to build a project from
source and obtain the .i files generated during the build process.
Step-by-step instructions are given on how to use the provided scripts to
do this without any modification to the build process of the project you
are trying to capture. These scripts were used to capture the build
process of 92.5% of the projects in the Red Hat Linux 7.3 distribution.

Changes: Lots of little bugs were fixed. This has been tested on most of
Debian.

Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email

About: Citadel is an advanced messaging and collaboration system for
groupware and BBS applications. Users can connect to Citadel using any
telnet, WWW, or client software. Among the features supported are public
and private message bases (rooms), electronic mail, real-time chat,
paging, shared calendaring, address books, mailing lists, and more. Unlike
other collaboration servers, Citadel provides its own data stores and is
therefore extremely easy to install; you don't have to "bring your own"
email and database because they're built in. The server is multithreaded
and scalable. In addition, SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 servers are built-in for
easy connection to Internet mail. Citadel is both robust and mature; it
has been in production since 1987.

Changes: Full-text search, handling of international character sets, and
support for RBL spam filters were improved.

[009] - CoaSim 4.0.2
  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Tue, Sep 13th 2005 11:31

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: CoaSim is a tool for simulating the coalescent process with
recombination and gene conversion under the assumption of exponential
population growth. It efficiently constructs the ancestral recombination
graph for a given number of individuals and uses this to simulate samples
of SNP and micro satellite haplotypes/genotypes. The generated sample can
afterwards be separated in cases and controls, depending on the states of
selected individual markers. The tool can accordingly also be used to
construct cases and control data sets for association studies.

Changes: Adds an option for providing command line arguments to scripts.

About: Comix is a comic book viewer. It reads zip, rar, tar, tar.gz, and
tar.bz2 archives (often called .cbz, .cbr and .cbt) as well as normal
image files.

Changes: Comix now handles zip, tar, tar.gz, and tar.bz2 archives
internally. A new option was added to let you go to the next archive when
flipping past the last page in the current archive, and vice versa for the
first page. A bug with small images sometimes being stretched to fit the
screen although the corresponding option was not set was fixed. A bug with
exiting fullscreen mode with the escape key was fixed. Supported image
formats are now only JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, and BMP. There were problems
with other files being reported as image files though they were not.

  Tue, Sep 13th 2005 22:48

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical

About: gipfel is a tool to find the names of mountains or points of
interest on a picture. It uses a database containing names and GPS data.
With the given viewpoint (the point from which the picture was taken) and
two known mountains on the picture, it can compute all parameters needed
to compute the positions of other mountains on the picture.
Additionally, it can try to guess these parameter if only one mountain is
known on the picture. In this case, a few other peaks need to be marked,
but it is not necessary to know their names. It can also be used to play
around with the parameters manually. But be warned: It is pretty
difficult to find the right parameters for a given picture manually.

Changes: gipfel can now display GPS-tracks. Perspective information can be
saved to the JPEG comment section. Experimental support for panorama images
has been added. The gipfel tarball now contains a default datafile with
more than 6000 entries from around the world.

Organizer and can send the appointments to a cellphone over the IR Port or
the serial device.

Changes: Support was added for Lotus Notes 6.x client, and was tested with
version 6.5. Some basic functions like parsing attendees, date, and time
are completely new. Now only appointments of the current and future years
are exported into the vCal format, excepting repeating entries.

  Tue, Sep 13th 2005 03:46

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: K3DSurf is a program for visualizing and manipulating
multidimensional surfaces by using Mathematical equations. It's also a
"modeler" for POV-Ray in the area of parametric surfaces. It features 3D,
4D, 5D, and 6D HyperObjects visualization, full support for all functions
(like the C language), support for mouse events in the drawing area,
animation and morph effects, Povscript and mesh file generation, and
support for VRML2 and OBJ files. More than 100 examples are provided.

Changes: A new section was added for the drawing of some "Super"
mathematical formulas. It is now possible to draw equations with one or
more conditions separated by "|"="OR" or "&"="AND". Conditions can only be
used with one System (3 explicit equations) and the result is not currently
"exportable" to any file format. Hidden surface removal was implemented,
reducing CPU usage during animations by up to 35%. Nastran file format
support was added.

About: The LibXDiff library implements basic and yet complete
functionalities to create file differences/patches to both binary and text
files. It uses memory files as file abstraction to achieve both performance
and portability. For binary files, it implements (with some modification)
the algorithm described in "File System Support for Delta Compression" by
Joshua P. MacDonald. For text files, it follows directives described in
"An O(ND) Difference Algorithm and Its Variations" by Eugene W. Myers.
Memory files used by the library are basically a collection of buffers
that store the file content.

a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To
some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, and SAX2.
Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes xmllint, a command

About: MayaVi is a free, cross platform, easy-to-use scientific data
visualizer. It provides a powerful GUI to ease the visualization process.
It is written in Python and uses the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) for the
graphics. MayaVi can be scripted from other Python programs and also from
the interactive Python interpreter. MayaVi includes the VTK Pipeline
browser. The VTK Pipeline browser is a Python module (vtkPipeline) that
enables one to view and configure the objects in the VTK pipeline
graphically with a Tkinter-based GUI. The browser should work for any
Python script that uses VTK. MayaVi also provides classes to pickle a VTK
object and a simple class documentation browser.

Changes: This release added a new LUT editor, support for user defined
sources, a vorticity filter, support for the VolumeProMapper, and support
for VTK-CVS and VTK-5.x. A new utility script for searching the VTK
documentation using a GUI was included. A severe bug in opening data files

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Metastorage is a PHP data access object generator compiler tool. It
implements an object persistence API from a description in an XML format
named CPML. The persistent object classes implement object-relational
mappings, so developers do not have to write SQL manually. It features an
object query language for specifying conditions for querying objects,
generation of classes for producing reports, generation of classes to
manage templated Web forms for creating new persistent objects, and
generation of UML class diagrams. It can be run from the command line or
from a Web interface.

Changes: This release takes advantage of the recently introduced features
of Metabase and uses auto-increment fields and primary keys to generate
new object identifiers instead of emulated sequences and unique indexes.
The generated code now also contains comments to let users better
understand what the code does. The Metastorage installation archives now
also bundle the MetaL compiler engine to make all that is necessary
available with a single download.

[040] - MIB Smithy SDK 3.3.5
  by Muonics (http://freshmeat.net/users/muonics/)
  Tue, Sep 13th 2005 02:32

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Tcl Extensions

About: MIB Smithy SDK is a dynamic extension to Tcl/Tk (8.1+) that allows
development of custom scripts for controlling SNMP agents, manipulating
SMI definitions, doing conversions, and more. It is based on the core of
Muonics' MIB Smithy, and the SDK supports SMIv1 and SMIv2, as well as
SNMPv1/v2c/v3 with HMAC-SHA-96 and HMAC-MD5-96 authentication and CBC-DES
privacy. It also provides complete read-write access to all elements of
SMI/MIB Module definitions, unlike similar extensions that provide only
read access to a limited subset. The SDK allows multiple discrete SMI
databases and SNMP sessions, and provides all of the built-in validation
and error recovery capabilites of the full product, without the visual MIB
development environment.

Changes: A number of bugs were fixed after greatly expanding regression
test coverage. These were primarily in the Scotty/TNM compatibility
package, a few potential crashes in abnormal circumstances, and some
performance issues. Enhancements were made to API usage error reporting
and SNMP session management.

About: NetXMS is a monitoring system with a modular architecture. It can
be used for monitoring an entire IT infrastructure, starting with
SNMP-capable hardware (like switches and routers) and ending with
applications on servers. The system has a three-tier architecture; the
information is collected by monitoring agents (either its own agents or
SNMP agents) and delivered to the monitoring server for processing and
storing, where it can be accessed by using the management console. It
features centralized configuration and centralized agent upgrades.

Changes: This release adds support for CheckPoint SNMP agent (running on
port 260), MIBs for Nokia IPSO, Agent.ActiveConnections parameter to core
agent, and the ability to grab a group of SNMP OIDs and show them as a
table (a router's process list, for example). Also fixes interface aliases

[071] - strongSwan 2.5.4
  by Andreas Steffen (http://freshmeat.net/users/asteffen/)
  Tue, Sep 13th 2005 02:29

System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It interoperates with most other IPsec products. It
is a descendant of the discontinued FreeS/WAN project. The focus of the
strongSwan project is on strong authentication mechanisms using X.509
public key certificates and optional secure storage of private keys on
smartcards through a standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique feature is
the use of X.509 attribute certificates to implement advanced access
control schemes based on group memberships.

Changes: The current extension of the PKCS#7 framework introduced a
parsing error in PKCS#7 wrapped X.509 certificates that are, for example,
transmitted by Windows XP when multi-level CAs are used. The parsing
syntax was fixed. The system now tolerates multiple occurrences of the
ipsec0 interface when using KLIPS.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: SwiXAT is a Swing-based authoring tool for the quick and easy
development of GUI Java applications. It implements a true MVC framework
and uses XML to define the view (SwiXML is used as the XUL engine),
BeanShell as a scripting language for the controller, and JXPath as the
binding mechanism between the view and model. It provides a complete
environment in which it is possible to almost write an entire Java Swing
application without writing Java compiled code. The use of XPath makes it
very simple to traverse the object tree of the application's business
model.

Changes: The event handling has been enhanced by introducing the
possibility to handle almost any event. The support for FileFilters was
added in order to determine the file extensions shown by a JFileChooser.
The optional TreeCellRenderer tag was added for JTrees, in order to set
the icon, text, and tooltip text of each tree's node. The user's guide has

About: wview is an application that controls a Davis Vantage Pro or
Vantage Pro2 weather station console to retrieve archive records and
current conditions. Archive records may optionally be stored in a
relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a user-defined interval,
wview will use the archive history and current conditions to generate
weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages based on configurable
HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data loggers, as well as
connectivity with a terminal server or serial server via TCP sockets.

Changes: The relational database timestamp format for weather archives was
changed to something accepted by PostgreSQL 8+.
