[001] - Aeskuap 0.1.0
  by Alexander Pipelka (http://freshmeat.net/users/pipelka/)
  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 14:48

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Aeskulap is a medical image viewer. It is able to load a series of
special images stored in the DICOM format for review. It is able to query
and fetch DICOM images from archive nodes (also called PACS) over the
network. The goal of this project is to create a full open source
replacement for commercially available DICOM viewers. It is based on
gtkmm, glademm, and gconfmm and designed to run under Linux. Ports of
these packages are available for different platforms. It should be quite
easy to port It to any platform were these packages are available.

About: Avahi is a framework for Multicast DNS Service Discovery on Linux.
It allows programs to publish and discover services and hosts running on a
local network with no specific configuration. For example, you can plug
into a network and instantly find printers to print to, files to look at,
and people to talk to.

Changes: This release fixes a critical bug triggered by configuring an
interface with various DHCP clients when you have no other active
addresses. This caused avahi-daemon to abort. SuSE init scripts were
added. dbm/anydbm was replaced by gdbm.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Address Book
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)

About: Brutus is an Exchange connector and development framework that
offers access to all of MAPI and therefore to all versions of Microsoft
Exchange from version 5.5 onwards. It is a complete wrapping of all of
MAPI into a (large) set of CORBA interfaces. It enables any groupware
client to integrate seamlessly into any organization with large Exchange
deployments on an equal footing with MS Outlook. Being based on CORBA, it
is platform independent, and works equally well on Linux, the BSDs,
Windows, or wherever there is a CORBA implementation available.

Changes: The Evolution 2.4 plugin (evolution-brutus) now acquires and uses
an IMAPISession on the remote server. This bootstrapping of
evolution-brutus will enable the implementation to move forward quickly.
evolution-brutus is still totally unusable for any non-developer. There
are still ORBit2 issues with crashes at application shutdown.

[011] - Conary 0.62.3
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 00:15

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Several group management fixes were made. Installing from
locally-cooked changesets works again. Repository ACLs can be deleted
again.

[012] - coNCePTuaL 0.6.3
  by Scott Pakin (http://freshmeat.net/users/pakin/)
  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 11:16

Communications
Software Development :: Compilers
System :: Benchmark

About: coNCePTuaL is a domain-specific programming language for rapidly
generating programs that measure the performance and/or test the
correctness of networks and network protocol layers. A few lines of
coNCePTuaL code can produce programs that would take significantly more
effort to write in a conventional programming language.

Changes: Log files are now more robust to machine crashes and killed
processes while still supporting two-dimensional access to the data rows
and columns. (The trick is to periodically flush the log, then rewind the
write pointer.) The build process now passes "make distcheck". The
logmerge and logunmerge scripts now include measurement data in the
merged/unmerged files. Many small bugs have been fixed.

[014] - Dazuko 2.1.0
  by John Ogness (http://freshmeat.net/users/jogness/)
  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 01:27

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: Dazuko provides a device driver allowing 3rd-party (userland)
applications to execute file access control. It was originally developed
by H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH to allow on-access virus scanning. Other uses
include a file-access monitor/logger or external security implementations.
It operates by intercepting file access calls and passing the file
information to a 3rd-party application. The 3rd-party application then has
the opportunity to tell the device driver to allow or deny the file access.
The 3rd-party application also receives information about the access event,
such as accessed file, type of access, process id, and user id.

Changes: Application groups now each have their own settings. A trusted
application framework is now available to allow non-registered file
access. Support for mixed 32-bit/64-bit environments has been added.
Support for Linux 2.6 LSM stacking has been greatly improved.

About: Dconf is a tool to collect a system's hardware and software
configuration. It allows you to take your system configuration with you
and compare systems (like nodes in a cluster) to troubleshoot hardware or
software problems. It can also be configured to send out configuration
changes at given intervals to a group of people, or store a new snapshot
when system changes happen.

Changes: axfdns, dnscache, openntpd, postgresql, shorewall, syslog-ng, and
tinydns sections were added. Sections in a snapshot are now sorted. rpmdb
access speed was improved.

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Testing

About: DUMA (Detect Unintended Memory Access) stops your program on the
exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer.
GDB will then display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works
by using the virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of
each buffer: touch that, and your program stops. It can catch formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs. DUMA is a fork of Bruce Perens' Electric

  by Piotr Roszatycki (http://freshmeat.net/users/d3xter/)
  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 07:51

System :: Systems Administration

About: fakechroot provides a fake chroot environment to programs. A fake
chroot allows you to run programs which require root privileges on an
unprivileged user account. For example, you can create a Debian bootstrap
or a development environment and build packages inside a chroot'ed system
using a standard non-root user account. You can then use the apt-get
command to install other packages without root privileges.

Changes: This release adds the option --use-system-libs as a workaround if
the system dynamic linker can't load the libc.so from fake chroot,
compatibility with libselinux.so, and support for Red Hat EL 4. The source
should be more portable and does not require a C++ compiler.

[025] - fcron 3.0.0 (Stable)
  by Thibault Godouet (http://freshmeat.net/users/fcron/)
  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 14:51

System

About: Fcron is a periodical command scheduler which aims at replacing
vixie cron, so it implements most of its functionality. It does not assume
that your system is running either all the time or regularly: you can, for
instance, tell fcron to execute tasks every x hours y minutes of system
uptime or to do a job only once in a specified interval of time. You can
also set a nice value to a job, run it depending on the system load
average, and much more.

Changes: This is the first stable release from the 2.9.X branch. It is a
big improvement compared to 2.0.X in robustness, security, and features.
fcrondyn, a program to interact with a running fcron process, has been
added. PAM support, SE Linux support, the ability to execute fcron in a
script and/or without root privileges, and better time zone have been
added. Upgrading is highly recommended.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: Metabase is a DBMS-independent PHP API to access SQL databases. It
supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL server, Microsoft
Access, ODBC, Interbase, Informix, MiniSQL, and SQLite. It can install
database schemas defined in a DBMS independent XML format that describe
tables, indexes, primary keys, and auto-increment sequences. It is also
able to upgrade a database to a new schema without affecting the data that
was stored since it was installed or upgraded for the last time. There is
also schema reverse engineering support.

Changes: This release adds support for installation of table primary keys
and access to auto-increment fields, even for databases that do not
support these kind of fields natively. The Oracle and PostgreSQL drivers
were enhanced to support more complex table schema alterations than in
previous releases. The main reference manual and the tutorial were updated
to detail these enhancements. A new FAQ document was added to clarify
aspects such as performance matters, missing features, and the Metabase
project details.

Multimedia :: Video :: Capture

About: libptp is a Picture Transfer Protocol support library. It is used
for downloading images from PTP cameras. It currently works with most
modern cameras from the following vendor: Kodak, HP, Nikon, Canon,
Panasonic, Olympus, Konica, Minolta, Fuji, Ricoh, and Sony. This package
also contains "ptpcam", the tool used to tweak camera properties and
perform some basic operations.

Changes: A number of bugs were fixed, including leaving the camera in an
unpredictable state when an I/O error occurs. The project's own
reimplementation of the old libusb interface (IOCTL_USB_BULK) is used
instead of the new URB interface, which is 20% to 50% slower and sometime
leads to I/O errors. File time preservation across download was added.

About: uni2ascii and ascii2uni convert between UTF-8 Unicode and any of a
variety of 7-bit ASCII equivalents including: hexadecimal and decimal HTML
numeric character references, \u-escapes, standard hexadecimal, and raw
hexadecimal. Such ASCII equivalents are useful when including Unicode text
in program source, when entering text into Web programs that can handle the
Unicode character set but are not 8-bit safe, and when debugging.

[082] - Web Performance Analyzer .4
  by Michael Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 11:15

About: Web Performance Analyzer is a Web performance tool that allows
designers to measure, analyze, estimate, and track Web page performance.
It is available as a standalone program and an Eclipse plugin. WPA
captures Web pages as you browse and reveals dynamic HTTP requests,
forwards, and other low-level details that aren't visible from a browser.
But unlike other simple protocol sniffers, WPA can tell you if your Web
pages are getting faster or slower by replaying recorded sessions and
comparing the current performance to previous measurements.

Changes: This release is almost feature complete, with just a couple of
details to work out. The only major feature missing is the ability to
watch Web pages go by when replaying a recorded test case. No license key
is required for .4-- all features are enabled. For the final release the
product will be split into two versions, "free" and "pro"; the only
difference between the two will be that the the free version won't support
SSL.

[083] - Web Performance Trainer 2.8 Build 613

  Fri, Sep 9th 2005 11:13

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: The feature of automatically configuring test cases to manage
application state like .NET's VIEWSTATE is ambitious, but is working like
a charm for most customers. Many applications tested during the beta
process had between 50 and 100 variables on the site to track state, which
would have been very time consuming to script by hand. This feature is
going to save people developing tests a huge amount of time over
developing test scripts by hand.

is separate from the GUI, which allows for intelligent management of
background tasks and the ability to use separate machines for the
interface and for playback.

Changes: This release fixes a major bug that caused problems such as audio
drop-outs and corruption when the same file was assigned to multiple
