Lemon Parser Generator Tutorial
by Mike Chirico (http://freshmeat.net/~mchirico/)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Aug 14th 2004 00:00

Lemon is a compact, thread safe, well-tested parser generator written by
Dr. Richard Hipp. Using a parser generator, along with a scanner like
flex, can be advantageous because there is less code to write. You just
write the grammar for the parser.

  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 20:02

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping

About: cdmp3 uses cdparanoia or cdda2wav to extract single tracks or even
a whole CD, and converts them on-the-fly into MP3 or Ogg Vorbis files.
Using the CDDB database, it is possible to include information like the
artist's name or the track's title into the file name or as meta tags in
the file content.

Changes: This release is now a Perl script and has native CDDB support.
New filename formatting patterns were added (these also are really
printf-like now), a CDDB-fetch-only  mode was integrated, and command-line
arguments have been made more flexible.

About: daemon turns other processes into daemons. There are many tedious
tasks that need to be performed to correctly set up a daemon process;
daemon performs these tasks for other processes. This is useful for
writing daemons in languages other than C, C++, or Perl (e.g. sh, Java).
If you want to write daemons in languages that can link against C
functions (e.g. C, C++), see libslack, which contains the core
functionality of daemon.

other document types, the ability to index multilangual sites using
content negotiation, searching of all of the word forms using ispell
affixes and dictionaries, stopwords and synonyms lists, boolean query
language support, results sorting by relevancy, popularity rank, last
modified time, and importance (a multiplication of the relevancy and
popularity ranks), support for various character sets, and phrases
segmenting for the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai languages. It has
accent-insensitive search, mod_dpsearch for Apache, and support for
internationalized domain names.

Changes: The TrackHops command was added. There are some improvements to
speed up searches. The Italian synonyms list was added. Fast relevancy
calculation has been added and is enabled by default. The LINKS table

[013] - DataVision 0.8.2
  by jimm (http://freshmeat.net/users/jimm/)
  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 23:31

Database :: Front-Ends
Office/Business
Software Development

About: DataVision is a reporting tool similar to Crystal Reports, written
in Java. It supports multiple data sources (JDBC, text files) and output
formats (HTML, XML, PDF, LaTeX, comma- and tab-separated data files, and
DocBook). It lets you design reports with a drag-and-drop GUI. Report
descriptions are stored as XML.

Changes: This release upgrades JRuby to 0.7.0. Resources now use the
current class loader. Layout engines output borders for null fields.
Subreports close their database cursors and save their formulas and user
columns. It now avoids adding multiple copies of table names to queries,
fixes subreport where clause display, and fixes query exceptions. The XML
layout engine closes its output properly. The database connection window
handles empty values. PDF layout engine outputs correct line thicknesses
on all pages. The "Select Records..." menu item is now enabled for
character-separated data file sources. CSV file reading is improved.

[014] - dd_rescue recovery tool 0.2
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 11:58

System :: Recovery Tools

About: dd_rescue copies data from one file or block device (hard disk,
cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read
errors. It does not truncate the output file if not asked to. So every
time you run it on the same output file, it tries to fill in the gaps.
The algorithmn will: read the non-damaged part of the disk, skipping the
damaged areas; try to read the damaged areas, splitting them into smaller
pieces and reading the non- damaged pieces, until the hardware block size
is reached; try to read the damaged hardware blocks until the specified
number of retries is reached, or until interrupted by the user.

Changes: Sometimes, the last sectors of a damaged area were ignored. The
algorithm is now faster in the presence of errors.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Video

About: eMoviX is a micro (7MB) Linux distro meant to be embedded in a CD
together with all video/audio files you want. A CD burned with eMoviX will
be able to boot and play automagically all of its files with MPlayer.
Supported formats are AVI (in particular DivX & XviD formats), MPEG,
QuickTime, WMV, ASF, MP3, Ogg, and in general everything supported by
MPlayer.

Changes: Most 0.9.0pre1 bugs have been fixed. Many remotes have been
imported from MoviX, and all text handling (subtitles and filenames) is
now based on utf8. TrueType fonts are now used in the MPlayer menu, and
translations in several languages have been imported from MoviX.

  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 03:28

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: EncFS is an encrypted pass-through filesystem which runs in
userspace on Linux (using the FUSE kernel module). Similar in design to
CFS and other pass-through filesystems, all data is encrypted and stored
in the underlying filesystem. Unlike loopback filesystems, there is no
predetermined or pre-allocated filesystem size.

Changes: A potential problem with per-block MAC processing used in
paranoia mode and if enabled in expert mode during setup was fixed. The
new algorithm is only used in new filesystems, as it is not backward
compatible. When mounting filesystems created by previous versions, the
old algorithm is used. Paranoia mode is now as much as two times faster
for new  filesystems only.

[022] - Find Duplicate Music Files 0.0.9j

  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 23:35

Communications :: File Sharing
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping

About: Find Duplicate Music Files is designed to detect music files that
contain the same music, even if the files are differently named, and are
in different formats such as MP3 and OGG, and contain different or
non-existent meta-information such as ID3 tags. The program operates on
whole directories of music file at a time, or upon multiple directories.
It analyzes them and outputs the filenames of pairs that seem similar.

Changes: This version adds a speedup for the case where there are two or
more identical files in the set of files being processed. Only the first
of the identical files will be analyzed. Subsequent identical copies will
reuse the summary vector that was calculated for the first one. The
speedup is about 100x for the subsequent files.

  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 11:56

System :: Operating System Kernels
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type
checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 02:23

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: LLVM is a compiler infrastructure designed for compile-time,
link-time, runtime, and "idle-time" optimization of programs from
arbitrary programming languages. It currently supports compilation of C
and C++ programs, using front-ends derived from gcc 3.4. There is a
demonstration front end, Stacker, which provides a simple forth-like
language. Work is currently under way to provide a Java class file, .NET
CLI, a PPC backend, and other significant improvements.

Changes: This release substantially improvec the speed of the compiler
and quality of generated code and added portability to Cygwin, a (beta)
PowerPC backend, man pages for all LLVM tools, accurate garbage
collection, and new loop transformations such as loop unrolling and
unswitching. New analyses included Andersen's alias analysis and a
context-senstitive alias analysis for global variables. Bugpoint, the
automated debugging tool, was improved to handle arbitrary modes of the
static compiler LLC and the JIT.

any source code version control system (such as CVS, Subversion, and arch)
with any bug-tracking system (such as Bugzilla and gnats).

Changes: This release fixes a bug where deletion of versions in Bugzilla
up to 2.16.x was not issued. The SCM Glue was reorganised in per SCM

[058] - Simple ECMAScript Engine 1.1
  by David Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/dleonard/)

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries

About: SEE is a lightweight ECMAScript (JavaScript) parser and run-time
environment. It conforms to ECMAScript Edition 3, JavaScript 1.5, and
provides compatibility switches for earlier versions of JavaScript and
Microsoft's JScript.

Changes: The functions Global.encodeURI and Array.prototype.concat and use
of literal brackets and hypens in regular expressions all now strictly
comply to the standard. A bug in unparsing of expressions and missing
parentheses has been fixed. Lexical analysis of SGML comments is now part
of compatibility mode. UTF-8 decoding now treats 'unsafe' sequences as
illegal. Function recursion is now depth-limited. Some speed-up was
obtained by optimising empty function calls. Syntax error messages and
documentation have been improved. Separate build directories are now
supported.

Communications
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Address Book

About: sYnergy is a Web-based groupware and communication solution for use
with an intranet. It includes email mailboxes, a fax viewer and sending
function, contact lists, an appointment and task management function, a
picture database, and a function for listening to voice messages. The
extensive user management enables administrators to assign various
permissions to each user and to exchange data e.g. contacts, appointments,
or tasks. It also offers a function to import existing data.

Changes: This release adds a field for the interval at which to transfer
email messages to sYnergy. This prevents problems with providers such as
GMX which allow POP3 account access only every 10 minutes. It adds a field
for encoding files during importation. It fixes an error which occurred if
the user tried to log on with the name of a user group, company, or
department, a problem with page numbers not displaying correctly, and
problems with simultaneous access to the mailbox. It improves speed when
searching for existing email messages in the mailbox content interface.

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers :: XFCE

About: The Claw3 is a file browser designed as an alternative to Nautilus,
Rox, Endeavour, and other multi-desktop file managers. It isn't desktop

Gadfly database to store directory information, and the image previews
are larger, have the correct aspect ratio, and contain any file
information present. It now features ID3 tag popup windows, on the fly
adding, deleting, renaming, and resizing of files without the need to
reload and, of course, more themes. On the downside, there are no more
dual panes.

[070] - Virtual AGC 20040813
  by Ron Burkey (http://freshmeat.net/users/rburkey/)
  Sat, Aug 14th 2004 11:35

Scientific/Engineering
System :: Emulators

About: Virtual AGC is a simulation of the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC)
used in the Apollo Command Modules and Lunar Modules in 1968-1972. The
project includes an emulated CPU, an emulated display/keyboard (DSKY),
the AGC's original executable binaries and machine-readable
assembly-language source code (Luminary and Colossus), AGC source code
for a CPU validation suite, an AGC assembler, scanned Apollo
documentation, and other elements. The emulated CPU has been designed to
be modular and portable, to facilitate incorporation into spacecraft
simulations such as lunar-lander simulations.

Changes: On Win32, a binary installation is now available, so you no
longer need to compile the software yourself. Furthermore, the Win32
version has been improved to the point of being as good as the Linux
version. The DSKY now has a --half-size option, so that it is usable on
displays smaller than 1024x768. About a third of the Colossus (command
module) source code is now available. Startup scripts have been added to
make it very easy to run the simulation. Numerous minor fixes and
improvements have been made.
