  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 03:37

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Information Management :: Document Repositories

About: Afian is an elegant Web-based document manager. It is designed to
let non-technical people manage and share folders online from anywhere
with only a Web browser, bypassing the limitations of firewalls and e-mail
policies. It provides an easy-to-use interface for the existing files in
the file system, and it doesn't modify files and folders in any way. Users
can easily maintain their own private file repositories, and can choose to
make certain folders available over the Web to other users or to the
public. Afian has four different view modes, with larger or smaller icons.

Changes: An installation wizard was added. An option to create user
groups was added (user accounts now inherit the permissions of groups).
The graphical interface of the file manager was enhanced, and the context
menus were simplified. The pull-down menu now works on Safari. A calendar
was added to the "user logs" section. In addition, security was improved.

[011] - CMU Common Lisp 19a
  by Eric Marsden (http://freshmeat.net/users/emarsden/)
  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 12:09

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers

About: CMUCL is a free, high performance implementation of the Common Lisp
programming language which runs on most major Unix platforms. It mainly
conforms to the ANSI Common Lisp standard. CMUCL provides a sophisticated
native code compiler; a powerful foreign function interface; an
implementation of CLOS; the Common Lisp Object System; which includes
multimethods and a metaobject protocol; a source-level debugger and code
profiler; and an Emacs-like editor implemented in Common Lisp. CMUCL is
maintained by a team of volunteers collaborating over the Internet, and is
mostly in the public domain.

Changes: This release features stack overflow checking, package locks,
weak hash tables, modular arithmetic, helpful local function names,
compiler checking of format strings and arguments, callbacks from foreign
code to LISP, fwrappers-style encapsulation, enhanced disassemble, heap
overflow checking, and enhanced source location recording that works for
macros. C functions are visible in backtraces (instead of just “Foreign
function call land”). This release also includes numerous bugfixes and
ANSI compliance changes, as well as significant performance enhancements
to the CLOS implementation.

  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 16:53

Printing

About: CodePrinter is a tiny utility to print out source code or other
text files. Its main intent is to provide print-outs for code reviews and
to save some paper by fitting two code pages onto one sheet of paper.
CodePrinter makes use of the Java Printing API. It features printing of
one or multiple files, line numbering, simple syntax highlighting for
Java, HTML, and XML files, preview with zoom-in/zoom-out functionality,
and printing of a single page or all previewed pages.

Changes: A stand-alone version has been added. This version now checks
for the fonts "Courier New" and "Arial", because some printers had
problems with Java's bold monospace font.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: Domain Technologie Control (DTC) is a Web GUI for administration
and accounting for hosting services. Made up of a set of PHP scripts that
manage a MySQL database which handles all the hosting information, it
generates backup scripts, statistics calculation scripts, and config files
for bind, Apache, qmail, postfix, courier, dovecot, and proftpd, using a
single system UID/GID. It allows administrators to delegate the task of
creating subdomains, email, and FTP accounts to users for the domain names
they own.

Changes: Latest add of a db_stop hung the install under Debian Sarge or
Sid when then installer was using apache-modconf. Now db_stop is done
before the (re)start of the daemon. This bug didn't appear on other OSs,
and it didn't occur if all needed Apache modules were enabled prior to
installation.This release generates an /etc/pam.d/smtp file with the
correct configuration. If you are using postfix-tls and pamd, this should
configure your SMTPD server to use DTC's database.

  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 16:55

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Pre-processors

About: Doublecpp is a preprocessor for C++ that handles a new linguistic
construct for defining branches of a multi-method. The "right" branch of
such a method will be selected dynamically at run-time according to the
actual type of the object on which the method is invoked, and to the
actual type of the first argument: double dispatch.

Changes: This release removes some ambiguities in the generated code.
There is more #line information in the generated code. It now recognizes
path separators in included files. Some command line options were added:
a --sourcepath option to specify where the files that can be modified are
located and --excludeheaders to explicitly state the header files that
must not be processed.

[031] - Internode Nodemap 1.1

  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 08:47

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Internode Nodemap is a network visualization tool. Using SNMP, it
gathers a periodic snapshot of the current state of the network. Then,
under instructions from its config file, it plots a series of "maps" of
the network over the top of GIF images in the Web server's document root,
using color and HTML CSS to indicate potential performance or reliability
problems. The maps are hierarchical "drill-down" views of the network. The
top-level map is a summary which can be clicked on to reveal specific
details; these more specific maps can also have additional maps nested
within.

Changes: A regex-parsing bug in parser.pm has been fixed. Support for
user-specified line thickness and "shaded" links has been added. SNMP
communities and versions can now be specified in nodemap.cf. update_stats
and update_pktloss have been completely replaced with a new scheduler. The
"Expect" routine which scripts ssh/rsh sessions was completely rewritten to
make it more robust and to fix a bug which made it occasionally chew up all
the VTYs on a router.

[044] - Linux Registry Project 0.3
  by Avi Alkalay (http://freshmeat.net/users/aviram/)
  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 04:41

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The Linux Registry is an alternative back-end for text
configuration files. Instead of each program having its own text
configuration files, the Registry tries to provide a universal and secure
framework for configuration parameters in a hierarchical key-value pair
mechanism. This way, any program can read and save its configuration using
a consistent API and can be aware of other applications configurations,
permitting easy application integration. While architecturally similar to
other OS registries, the Linux Registry does not have most of the problems
those implementations have.

Changes: The Key and KeySet CHANGE NOTIFICATIONS framework is now
provided. The new "rg monitor" command was added to monitor keys in shell
scripts. Complete doxygen API documentation is available to browse and
download, with a lot of code examples at http://registry.sf.net/#man. "rg
import" from XML and "rg export" to XML were improved to make backups,
migrations, etc. Development can be done in C/C++, shell, Python, Ruby,
and XML. "regedit" can be used to graphically edit the key database.

About: x10dev provides a /dev interface to an X10 network through a
combination of Linux kernel modules and daemons. It is intended to provide
a standard interface and syntax to shell script utilities (such as cat and
echo), Perl scripts, C programs, or Java programs so that everything from
a quick hack to a more advanced program can manipulate the X10 devices in
an automated home regardless of the transceiver used. Its simplest use is
with shell scripts (examples of which are provided in the package).
Currently the project supports the 3 X10 transceivers (PowerLinc Serial,

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: LiteSpeed Web Server is a full-featured, high-performance, secure,
and easy-to-use Web server that runs on Unix and Linux. It supports
HTTP/1.1, SSL, CGI, FastCGI, PHP, JSP, Servlets, GZIP compression,
htaccess, chroot, IP level throttling, connection accounting, DoS attack
prevention, and instant recovery mechanisms. Installation is very easy
with a pre-built binary. Administration and configuration is very easy
through a Web interface. It can be used as a content accelerator,
compression proxy, or security guard running in front of any Web server
and application server.

Changes: A bug that may have caused internally redirected requests
failure has been fixed, as was a bug in the SSL implementation that may
have caused a blank page to be displayed in the user's Web browser. The
FastCGI process manager has been improved to remove dead Unix domain

[047] - lmbench 3.0-a4 (Development)
  by Carl Staelin (http://freshmeat.net/users/carlstaelin/)
  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 04:50

System :: Monitoring

About: lmbench is a suite of simple, portable, ANSI/C microbenchmarks for
UNIX/POSIX. In general, it measures two key features: latency and
bandwidth. lmbench is intended to give system developers insight into the
basic costs and capabilities of key aspects of system operation. It is
easily extensible, so users may develop their own benchmarks utilizing the
lmbench timing and result reporting harness. It includes a very wide
variety of benchmarks for measuring the bandwidth and/or latency of
various system operations.

Changes: This is primarily a bugfix release. It should now work reasonably
well on most hardware. The most significant non-bugfix change is in
lat_mem_rd. It now has two modes: sequential strided access, and random
access. Each access mode is common in real applications, and each is
important. The old lat_mem_rd access pattern (reverse strided access) was
a hybrid of the two patterns that was predictable by some hardware and not
others and did not really reflect any common memory access pattern. The new
lat_mem_rd is considered more accurate and better matches common system
usage.

[050] - matrixss 0.0.20040810
  by Henrik Bäärnhielm (http://freshmeat.net/users/redstar_/)
  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 06:02

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: matrixss is a package for the GAP system (gap-system.org)
implementing the Schreier-Sims algorithm for matrix groups, using
different approaches. This can be used as an alternative to the built-in
GAP implementation.

Changes: An algorithm highly inspired by the nearly linear time algorithm,
described in Seress book as well as in the 1991 paper by Babai et al, has
been implemented. However, some parts of the nearly linear time algorithm
has not yet been implemented; in particular, the "short Schreier trees".
The implementation is still very slow, though, so the fastest version is

(tested with Apache 1.x and 2.x) with PHP (version 4, should work with
version 5) and GD (verson 1.x or 2.x) support.

Changes: register_globals support was fixed. trim() was added to tracks.
strpos() is used instead of ereg(), which improves rendering time. The
XHTML and CSS are now valid. Functions are used to reduce code
duplication. Various files were removed, since their functionality is now
in index.php. The rendering time is now printed on the bottom of the HTML
page. The look was changed, and a header was added to the top of the HTML
page. The skin format was slightly changed, and the skins were updated. A

[082] - SQL Relay 0.35
  by David Muse (http://freshmeat.net/users/mused/)
  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 01:21

Database :: Front-Ends

About: SQL Relay is a persistent database connection pooling, proxying,
and load balancing system for Unix and Linux supporting ODBC, Oracle,
MySQL, mSQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase, MS SQL Server, IBM DB2, Interbase, Lago,
and SQLite, and with APIs for C, C++, Perl, Perl-DBD, Python, Python-DB,
Zope, PHP, PHP Pear DB, Ruby, Ruby-DBD, Java and TCL, drop-in replacement
libraries for MySQL and PostgreSQL, command line clients, a GUI
configuration tool, and extensive documentation. The APIs support
advanced database operations such as binding variables, multi-row fetches,
client side result set caching, and suspended transactions. It is ideal for
speeding up database-driven Web-based applications, accessing databases
from unsupported platforms, migrating between databases, distributing
access to replicated databases, and throttling database access.

Changes: This version features Oracle 10g support, a MySQL drop-in
replacement library, a PHP Pear DB driver, SQLite 3 support, temporary
table support, enhanced stored procedure support, and lots of bugfixes
and enhancements.

[087] - tinyproxy 1.6.3 (Stable)
  by Robert James Kaes (http://freshmeat.net/users/rjkaes/)
  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 16:52

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Networking

About: tinyproxy is a lightweight HTTP proxy designed to do the job with a
minimum of system resource use. It's ideal for small networks in which a
larger HTTP proxy such as Squid might be overkill or a security risk. This
simplicity also makes tinyproxy an ideal candidate for customization; it
takes very little time to read and understand the tinyproxy source, and
you can start adding your own desired features in short order.

Changes: This release fixes a problem with upstream proxy support. All
the fields in the child_config_s structure now use signed integers since
the servers_waiting variable is a signed integer. This ensures all the
comparisons are computed correctly. The standard file descriptors (stdin,
stdout, and stderr) are closed when a production executable is compiled.
They are only left open when a debugging version of tinyproxy is created.
Some spelling mistakes were fixed.

  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 09:47

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3

About: TWIG is a Web-based groupware suite written in PHP, compatible with
both PHP3 and PHP4. Its features include IMAP and POP3 email, Usenet
newsgroups, contact management, scheduling, shared notes and bookmarks, a
todo list, and meeting announcements. Any piece of information can be
shared with others via group oriented access controls. By using only plain
HTML, it is a simple, cross-platform, fast, and browser-independent way to
access or share almost any kind of information, without the complexity or
costs of other intranet/groupware packages. It is fully internationalized,
with 24 translations.

Changes: Two alpha bugs are fixed in this release: one in the translation
system, which only liked to show English, and another in the Main feature,
which was showing double column headers in the Meetings mini-display.
Several new features have been added, including support for calling TWIG
from mailto: links, capacity graphs in the Mail feature, and for the first
time, Javascript is used for minor buttons which previously required
round-trip processing. The Search feature is now enabled by default, and
TWIG can now operate with register_globals = Off.

[098] - XDBCMS 0.03
  by Carl Beech (http://freshmeat.net/users/carlbeech/)
  Tue, Aug 10th 2004 16:52

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: XDBCMS is a Web-based, multi-user CMS that can manage any number of
Web sites, each site with any number of pages, and each site organised in a
tree-based menu that can be any depth. Where XDBCMS differs from most
content management systems is that it actually generates a stand-alone Web
site, which requires no database to drive it, can be 'released' to any Web
server, and would be able to cope with very large numbers of users. For
the authors, it features a WYSIWYG editor, similar to MS-Word in
appearance, allowing full control over the format (tables, fonts,
graphics, etc.) of each individual page. It allows multiple authors and
features a group-based security system.

Changes: This release adds a new 'explorer' tree view to navigate around
the Web site being edited. It adds checks to ensure records cannot be
deleted if records are connected, e.g. deleting a Web site with pages
defined. It also adds a new logout facility, and fixes a bug within the
installer to create the database properly in the latest versions of
MySQL.
