Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

About: AEditor is a programmer's editor both for Windows and Unix that
relies on the fox toolkit. It can do syntax coloring, and it's easy to
change the color theme. Most things are customizable. It is written in
Ruby and is carefully unit-tested (it has 277 tests). It is written in
only ~4000 lines of code, so it should be easy to grasp and extend.

Changes: Rendering has been heavily optimized. Only the necessary screen
draws are performed, greatly reducing CPU usage for the common operations.

Desktop Environment
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing
Office/Business

About: AntiRight is a lightweight and scripted desktop environment that
uses the Motif toolkit. Development is carried out with a minimalistic
philosophy in mind. The software consists of a text editor, a desktop
panel, a sticky note utility, system management panels, a file manager, a
calculator interface, a color/background selector, a command launcher, a
simple help system, an email and Web browser launcher, a theme selector, a
preferences utility, a series of system monitors including a graphical load
meter, and a CD player. The desktop panel consists of a launcher panel
button, a screen lock button, a virtual desktop switcher, an alarm
utility, a command launcher, a clock, a user counter, a load meter, and a
mail checker.

Changes: This release adds a new theme customization technique which
allows for less wrapping of theme definitions. A small border around
desktop panels has been added to enhance the appearance. New dialog code
which is used to enhance message display, user input, and file management
has been added. New updating features, which add updating of progress bars
and labels and allow modification of update frequency, have been added.
General code cleanups have also been performed.

  by Alex Gureev (http://freshmeat.net/users/spyroman/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 17:46

About: BlogBridge is a new kind of Blog reader. It is designed to allow
non-technical users to discover, follow, and enjoy literally hundreds of
RSS feeds without losing their minds.

Changes: A central feature of this release is the ability to interact with
a service located on the BlogBridge home site. Currently, the service is
capable only of synchronizing the list of user's guides and channels
between several computers. You can use this feature to store your list on
BlogBridge's server. The UI was significantly extended and tuned to bring
greater responsiveness to the user. The memory footprint was slightly
reduced. You can easily synchronize through OPML import/export or service
features. More actions and modes of article displaying are available.

[017] - CRM114 Discriminator 20040808
  by Crah the Merciless (http://freshmeat.net/users/wsymerlcom/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 00:11

Communications :: Email
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: CRM114 is a Controllable Regex Mutilator and Smart Filter, designed
for easy creation of filters for things like incoming email redirection,
spam filtering, system logs, or monitoring processes. Filtering rules can
be either hard-coded (such as regexes), soft-coded (calculated at runtime
or read from an external file or process), or learned dynamically by
phrase matching (by SBPH hashing or Markovian matching, or Winnowing).
This makes it possible to create very accurate filters with very little
actual work. Accuracies over 99.9% are achievable.

Changes: SYSCALL now has better code for "async" and "keep" (async is now
truly "fire and forget", and keep keeps the process around without losing
state, and default processes will now not hang forever if they overrun
the buffer). The documentation was improved, and both OSB and Winnow are
now less buggy. A particularly nasty bug that mashed isolated vars of
zero length was fixed. -D and -R (Dump and Restore) are now available in
cssutil for moving .css files between different endian architectures.

About: DRACONi Automation aims to be a home automation and digital
entertainment/automation control package. It's designed to be modular,
meaning new kinds of functionality can be added easily. Currently, the X10
CM11A and Applied Digital Ocelot/Leopard are supported. It can also control
XMMS and the Festival Speech Synthesis System.

Changes: User-definable macros were added. You can now create a macro
that can control nearly all modules in the system. The macro system is
module-based, so modules can be created that can easily take part in the

[021] - EncFS 1.1.6
  by Valient  Gough (http://freshmeat.net/users/vgough/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 13:30

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: EncFS is an encrypted pass-through filesystem which runs in
userspace on Linux (using the FUSE kernel module). Similar in design to
CFS and other pass-through filesystems, all data is encrypted and stored
in the underlying filesystem. Unlike loopback filesystems, there is no
predetermined or pre-allocated filesystem size.

Changes: A bug causing failure of recursive renames when file-IV chaining
is enabled has been fixed. A bug allowing truncate() to create files with
a fixed file IV header instead of random has been fixed (the file was
still readable, but it defeats the purpose of having a per-file IV header
if the header isn't always random). Support has been added for IV chaining
to old OpenSSL code.

Communications
Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Etherpuppet is a small program for Linux that will create a virtual
interface (TUN/TAP) on one machine from the ethernet interface of another
machine through a TCP connection. Everything seen by the real interface
will be seen by the virtual one. Everything sent to the virtual interface
will be emitted by the real one. It has been designed because one often
has a small machine as his Internet gateway, and sometimes want to run
some big applications that need raw access to this interface, for sniffing
(Ethereal, etc.) or for crafting packets that do not survive being
reassembled, NATed, etc. It can even run on Linux embedded routers such as
the Linksys WRT54G.

Changes: This release adds DNS name resolution. It adds

[025] - getmail 4.0.9 (Stable)
  by Charles Cazabon (http://freshmeat.net/users/twoflower/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 21:42

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: This version fixes a cosmetic error for IMAP mailboxes with 0
messages in them, changes the method of obtaining UID validity from the
IMAP server and remove wrapper. Previously, connecting to an IMAP-SSL
server could fail if a non-SSL IMAP connection were attempted immediately
 before. This was due to a Python bug for which a workaround has been
implemented

prevent the VMM from swapping the reserved memory to disk. This can be
beneficial in various test cases where resource limits are not a
meaningful method for memory status management.

Changes: Long command line parameters now work as expected. A quiet

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Libnids is a library that provides the functionality of one of the
NIDS (Network Intrusion Detection System) components, namely E-component.
Libnids code watches all local network traffic, cooks received datagrams a
bit, and provides convenient information about them to the NIDS analyzing
modules. Libnids performs assembly of TCP segments into TCP streams, IP
defragmentation, and TCP port scan detection.

Changes: This version fixed signed/unsigned comparisons that could cause
crashes in TCP option parsing. The PCAP header of the last received
packet is now exported along with the timeout parameter to
pcap_open_live.  DLT_PRISM_HEADER and DLT_PPP_SERIAL are now  supported,
and dataless ACKs are now let through. The raw_init() prototype was
fixed, and %edi is used instead of %ebx in csum_partial to resolve issues
 with GCC 3.5. Inline assembly was cleaned up, and a bug where queued FIN

many workitems were stored in each a thread was fixed. Given a certain
maximum limit, the current implementation will switch to unthreaded
storage operation. The ExpressionPool (file version) storage tree was
made a bit deeper to have less files in the directories. The
ControlSession interface reached a more mature stage as pyya REST tests
were introduced for it.

[056] - PCX Firewall 1.4 (CGI Web Frontend)
  by James A. Pattie (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcxuser/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 21:44

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: PCX Firewall is an IPTables firewalling solution that uses Perl to
generate static shell scripts based upon the user's configuration
settings. This allows the firewall to startup quickly, as it does not have
to parse config files every time it starts.

Changes: The editPaths screen now properly checks to make sure you
selected a Path, interface(s), and/or service(s) to make sure JavaScript
and backend errors do not occur. Sudo is now set up by the Debian
packages (non-demo only).

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: phpCodeGenie (PCG) is a code generator for database driven
applications. PCG can talk to different databases and generate entire
applications for you. While the core version generates mostly PHP code,
phpCodeGenie can be modified via user plugins to generate code in any
programming language. It will build data entry forms, insert scripts,
database lister scripts, edit record forms, update record scripts, delete
confirmation scripts, delete scripts, search forms, search scripts, and
other frontend/database interaction code. Basically, it provides a basic
code base which you can build on.

Changes: The entire code generation engine has been redone. A database
abstraction layer (ADODB) has been introduced to allow phpCodeGenie to
talk to different databases. Users have ability to write their own plugins
and add them to PCG. Object oriented code is used for the entire code
generation engine. The ability to generate code in different languages
other than PHP was added. The ability to generate an entire application
and save the entire application to the filesystem was added.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: pkt is a universal XML packet archiver. It can manipulate files for
backing up documents, transferring them across networks, emailing them, and
sharing them by other means (p2p etc). It uses plugin filters to do the job
and handles virtually any format available if there is a plugin for it. It
handles encryption, compression, conversion, parity checking, decryption,
decoding, repairing, rebuilding, and other tasks using a universal file
format (XML-based). By default, all pkt output is in 7-bit ASCII which is
UTF encoded and is compatible with XML parsers. pkt files can be
disassembled, reassembled, and repaired by hand if necessary. pkt also
supports the use of 8-bit compressed XML packets for its archives using
one of several compression algorithms. In general, pkt will try to use the
best algorithms available.

Changes: An output directory/prefix option has been added for rebuild,
decode, decrypt, and decompress. A file finder has been added to the GUI
interface (text editor). A warning notice for badly behaved and/or buggy
JVMs has been added. A Virtual Keyboard utility has been added. The CLI
help text has been updated for the file prefix/output directory option.

specifying the red, green, and blue values and the x, y coordinates of the
pixel. It includes functions for plotting simple geometric shapes (circle,
rect, line), plotting text (UTF-8 support for Asian languages), reading
the colour of a pixel, reading in a whole PNG file (great for image
analysis), plotting and reading in HSV colourspace, and many others that
might come in handy.

Changes: Flood and boundary fill functions were added along with a simple
polygon function. Plotting and reading to and from the CMYK colour space
is now supported.

About: The Stabilizer bug tracking system aims to quickly stabilize buggy
GUI applications so that people can get real work done with them. Users
can collaboratively and quickly stabilize applications simply by using
them normally and reporting any bugs that they encounter to prevent anyone
(including themselves) from encountering them again. As soon as a few
people report the same bug, warnings will be issued to all users whenever
they are about to trigger that bug and they will be given the opportunity
to abort the input event. The bugs need to be fixed eventually, but this
makes the application useful in the meantime.

Changes: The Swing-based client is now functional again and includes most
of the features of the PyQt GUI. Several new bug prediction algorithm
variations were included. By default, the regular method calls/argret
default options are disabled and mouseMoved callbacks are now filtered
out. Support for setting the learner's configuration options in the
runner's command line options was added along with a skeleton for

[093] - Web Performance Trainer 2.7 Beta 9
  by Michael Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 10:26

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: This latest beta is considered to be a release candidate. An
exception which occurred when deleting test results was fixed. Redirection
web page grouping was fixed. A bug with rerunning the form-based user
identity wizard was fixed. SSL and client certificates working through an
HTTP proxy were fixed. The user interface was changed so that recording or
playback can be stopped from any tab.

[094] - Wi.Ser Beta 0.2.0
  by dvdw (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 06:02

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Changes: This version provides better HTML rendering performance (up to
50%), an enhanced WebWindow system with window-move and window-resize via
mouse drag. HTML color schemes are now configurable. Applications are now
deployable as standard ".war" files. A better tutorial was written. A lot
of bugfixes are included as well.

[096] - wordcircle 1.02
  by Matt Reider (http://freshmeat.net/users/wordcircle/)
  Mon, Aug 9th 2004 21:08

About: Wordcircle is a program for teachers/professors and their students.
Teachers log in and create courses. When they create a course, they get a
course key to give to their students. Courses consist of four parts:
"thoughts" (news/announcements), a "calendar" for supplementing a
syllabus, "discussions", and "documents." There is also a document
management utility.

Changes: The application now includes installation scripts that work
automatically when you run the index page. Almost all of the images were
stripped out and replaced with an editable style sheet as well as an
editable header and footer. A help document was also added. The user
security was changed so that there is no distinction between teachers and
students; now everyone is the same and can either create a course or
enroll in other courses. A number of bugs were fixed in the process.
