[001] - afio 2.5
  by Koen Holtman (http://freshmeat.net/users/kholtman/)
  Sunday, December 21st 2003 07:28

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Afio makes cpio-format archives. It deals somewhat gracefully with
input data corruption, supports multi-volume archives during interactive
operation, and can make compressed archives that are much safer than
compressed tar or cpio archives. Afio is best used as an `archive engine'
in a backup script.

Changes: Support was added for archiving files larger than 2 GB. Support
was added for creating archives larger than 2GB on a filesystem. Various
small bugfixes were made. Some small new features were added. The
documentation was improved.

Software Development :: Build Tools
System

About: apt-fu is a command line tool for the downloading, modifying,
building, and installing of Debian binary packages from their source
code. It can automatically target source packages for a non-Debian
architecture compatible with supported Debian architecture. It can also
automatically modify fields in control files, automatically apply
patches, and run other modifications through scripts known as optFiles.

Changes: Version 0.2.4 was accidentally released without all the new
features in 0.2.3, so this release includes all of the omitted features.
Changelog dates are now correctly handled when using exotic locales. An
--ignore-build-deps option was added. build-info now logs the displays
options used.

[005] - avidemux 2.0.20 (Development)
  by mean99 (http://freshmeat.net/users/mean99/)
  Sunday, December 21st 2003 01:59

Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor

About: Avidemux is a graphical tool to edit video. It can open AVI, MPEG,
Nuppelvideo and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported (M-JPEG, MPEG,
DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec. Video can be edited,
cut, appended, filtered (resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either
AVI (DivX/Xvid) or MPEG 1/2.

Changes: This release fixes three major bugs present in 2.0.18: broken
VCD export, slow Xvid, and Xvid 2 pass broken. In addition, it supports
Xvid 1.0 beta 2, as well as a new audio filter to resample to any
frequency. An MPEG requant feature is now also present. This release also
 features a redesigned UI.

[006] - Blackdown Java 2 Standard Edition for Linux 1.4.2-rc1
  by Juergen Kreileder (http://freshmeat.net/users/jkreileder/)
  Sunday, December 21st 2003 19:32

Internet
Multimedia
Software Development

About: The Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) is a feature-complete
development and deployment platform. Blackdown provides both a SDK (J2SDK,
formerly known as JDK) and a runtime environment (J2RE) for Linux on
various architectures (ix86, AMD-64, Sparc, PPC, S/390, ARM, m68k). Both
the J2SDK and the J2RE contain the Java Plug-In for Netscape 4.x and
Mozilla/Netscape 6.x.

Changes: This release adds a 64-bit version for Linux/AMD64 and an
epoll-based java.nio.channels.Selector implementation which provides
better scalability than the default poll-based implementation (this can be
enabled with "-Djava.nio.use_epoll=true"; it requires a kernel with epoll
support). All native code generated at runtime is now marked with
PROT_EXEC. Java now works fine with heap/stack/data execution protection.
This release adds more "volatile" spec fixes, further SMP improvements,
and lots of small bugfixes,

  Sunday, December 21st 2003 12:27

Multimedia
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling

About: The Java 3D API enables the creation of three-dimensional graphics
applications and Internet-based 3D applets. It provides high-level
constructs for creating and manipulating 3D geometry and building the
structures used in rendering that geometry. With this software, you can
efficiently define and render very large virtual worlds. Blackdown's
version of Java 3D uses the OpenGL low-level API to take advantage of 3D
hardware acceleration.

Changes: This release is available for two architectures: i386 and AMD-64
(first release for that architecture). There are many generic bugfixes,
and some fixes for Linux-specific problems (such as the off-screen
rendering problem on NVidia cards).

[022] - Dump/Restore 0.4b35

  Sunday, December 21st 2003 05:21

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Filesystems

About: The dump package contains both dump and restore. Dump examines
files in a filesystem, determines which ones need to be backed up, and
copies those files to a specified disk, tape or other storage medium. The
restore command performs the inverse function of dump; it can restore a
full backup of a filesystem. Subsequent incremental backups can then be
layered on top of the full backup. Single files and directory subtrees may
also be restored from full or partial backups.

Changes: This is a maintenance release that contains a few bug fixes, such
as build fixes for 64-bit platforms and man page clarifications. The
ability to exclude an unlimited number of inodes was added. restore now
builds on Solaris. QFA now works both on local and remote tapes.

dvd-mainmenu makes a top-level DVD menu with the output files from
dvd-slideshow. gallery2slideshow makes the input file for dvd-slideshow
from your Gallery album. jigl2slideshow makes the input file for
dvd-slideshow from your jigl album. It uses dvdauthor and mjpegtools.

Changes: A bug which occurred when no background was specified has been
fixed (again). Error checking has been added to make sure image files
exist. Ogg audio format is supported (oggdec is required). This release
uses toolame for MP2 audio encoding when available. Audio timing has been
improved. A bug which occurred when there were double quotes in a subtitle
has been fixed. Black, fadein, and fadeout options have been added to
txtfile. A -p (PAL format) option has been added.

  by Knud (http://freshmeat.net/users/knud/)
  Sunday, December 21st 2003 05:24

Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Eigenpoll is a script which lets your users compare different
options. Then it uses an algorithm similar to Google's PageRank to order
the options. It is great for comparing your favorite open source software
to other options, to find the best book on a subject, or to find the best
practices for a problem domain.

Changes: Minor bugfixes were made to the interface code.

About: FMPP is a text file preprocessor that uses FreeMarker templates to
provide macros, flow control, and expressions. It uses recursive directory
processing, so it can generate complete homepages (a tree of HTML files
and images). It is extendable in Java to display data from any data source
(such as a database). It is usable with a command-line interface, as an
Ant-task, or embedded into a Java application.

Changes: This release adds missing XML related settings: turning on
validation and OASIS catalogs for entity resolution. There are other
improvements and bugfixes as well, mostly in the included fresh nightly
FreeMarker build.

[027] - Folding@home 4.00 (Stable)
  by Duncan3 (http://freshmeat.net/users/duncan3/)
  Sunday, December 21st 2003 06:34

Education
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: Folding@home simulates protein folding. We do not entirely
understand how proteins actually operate, but one important step is to
study how proteins self-assemble or "fold." This is an extremely
computationally intensive task since proteins take in the order of
microseconds to milliseconds to fold, yet we can only routinely simulate
over nanosecond to microsecond time scales. This system provides a new way
to simulate protein folding that can break the millisecond barrier by
dividing the work between multiple processors. Thus, with 1000 processors,
we can break the millisecond barrier and help unlock the mystery of how
proteins fold.

Changes: Feature enhancements were made. Error handling was improved. Some
bugfixes were made. The AltiVec speed was increased by two to three times
since the last major release.

  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sunday, December 21st 2003 07:19

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to
only those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed
through an existing iptables policy.

Changes: tcp-reset reject support was added for TCP sessions under the
--ipt-block option. The ability to automatically download the latest rules
from snort.org was added. Better checking was added for iptables
extensions such as the opv4options and ttl extensions. A bugfix was made
for IP protocol numbers in snort rules.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Mini-XML is a small XML parsing library that you can use to read
XML and XML-like data files in your application without requiring large
non-standard libraries. It only requires an ANSI C compatible compiler
(GCC works, as do most vendors' ANSI C compilers) and a "make" program. It
supports reading and writing of UTF-8 encoded XML files, and provides a
hierarchical view of the file via a linked-list tree structure of typed
nodes and functions for managing, traversing, and searching the tree.

Changes: Support was added for all of the standard HTML entity names,
entities in element names, attribute names, attribute values, and null
attribute values. A new error callback was added for catching errors
instead of displaying them to stderr. The new release also fixes some bugs

[051] - Name Server Configurator 2.99b
  by Martin Mares (http://freshmeat.net/users/mj/)
  Sunday, December 21st 2003 07:05

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: NSC is a set of utilities for easy administration of DNS servers.
You write very simple configuration files and NSC automatically generates
zone files, reverse zone files, and configuration for the BIND. Among
other things, it also supports classless reverse delegations and IPv6
addressing. NSC is written in POSIX shell and GNU M4, and it should run on
all systems where these two languages are available. Generation of DNS
daemon config files is currently limited to BIND 8 or 9, but it's very
easy to add your own config file generators for other daemons.

Changes: This is a pre-release of NSC 3.0. The whole package has been
rewritten. It's now much cleaner and easier to use, and it also supports
IPv6 and different kinds of classless delegations. The code looks stable,
but since it has not been tested on many name servers yet, it should be
considered beta.
