[002] - ALE 0.4.6
  by David Hilvert (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhilvert/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 11:47

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture

About: ALE aligns and merges several similar images from a digitizing
device (such as a digital camera or scanner) into a single image. This may
have the effect of producing a relatively alias-free image (sometimes
called "anti-aliasing").

Changes: This release fixes bugs in drizzling and post-processing. The
following combinations should now work as expected: drizzling in
combination with scaling and Irani-Peleg image reconstruction in
combination with high-frequency enhancement.

[003] - Allegro 4.1.11 (Development)
  by Grzegorz Adam Hankiewicz (http://freshmeat.net/users/gradha/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 00:36

Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Allegro is a multi-platform game library for C/C++ developers that
provides many functions for graphics, sounds, player input (keyboard,
mouse, and joystick), and timers. It also provides fixed and floating
point mathematical functions, 3D functions, file management functions,
compressed datafile, and a GUI.

Changes: This version temporarily reverts the fix for the mouse bug when
scrolling with the X11 driver under Unix, fixes the invocation of non-GNU
make in the configure script, reworks the configure check for
sched_yield() under Unix, and fixes a Bashism in fix.sh that makes
Solaris' sh choke. It is now possible to compile apps if just the
Allegro framework is installed under MacOS X. select_palette() and
unselect_palette() were fixed as was the build failure with MSVC, and a
bug in _fill_3d_edge_structure(). There were various
improvements/updates to the documentation.

[004] - arch revision control system 1.1pre1 (tla Development)
  by Tom Lord (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomaslord/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 01:01

Software Development
Software Development :: Version Control

About: arch is a modern replacement for CVS, specifically designed for the
distributed development needs of open source projects. It has uniquely
good support for development on branches (especially good merging tools),
distributed repositories (every developer can have branches in their own
repository), changeset-oriented project management (arch commits changes
to multiple files at once), and, of course, file and directory renaming.

Changes: A version of the "star-merge" command (smart merging between
mutually merged branches) has been added in this version. A new
"ancestry" command (for querying the history of a revision) has been
added. Several bugs have been fixed.

[005] - ArX 1.0pre9
  by wlandry (http://freshmeat.net/users/wlandry/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 19:28

Software Development :: Version Control

About: ArX is a distributed revision control system that features
distributed repositories, fancy merging, support for renaming, unobtrusive
operation, a Web interface, and revision libraries. It consists of a
collection of shell scripts and C code, and brings together many shell
utilities, SSH, HTTP, diff, and patch.

Changes: The build system has been completely revamped. Please read the
INSTALL file for the new procedure. For now, building RPMs will not work.
You can no longer commit to mirrors; they should only be updated with
push-mirror. The notifiers do not work anymore. They will be replaced in
the next release. ArX might work on IRIX now, but this has not been really
tested.

[017] - DRT 0.3.2
  by Amir Michail (http://freshmeat.net/users/amir/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 07:16

Software Development

About: DRT is a design recovery tool for interactive graphical
applications running under the X Window System. The tool automatically
captures actions performed while using such an application. Functions
particularly relevant to each action are highlighted. Moreover, the action
itself is described visually from fragments of the application display.
One can search and browse these actions to learn about the design of an
application.

Changes: A new way to browse source code that is particularly relevant to
an action was introduced: when you click on a function in an action, you
will see color-coded hyperlinked source code. Only functions called in
that action are color-coded and hyperlinked, so you will see a view of the
source that is particularly relevant to that action. The pruning of
function calls was also improved. Note that DRT now requires PyQt 3.6 and
Qt 3.1.

About: Hotlist is a simple URL manager that handles bookmarks in an HTML
file. At the moment all it does is add and delete URLs from a file. The
idea is that if you are always finding URLs that you want to view but
forget them when you get the chance to go online, then you should put them
in this file and set it as your homepage.

Changes: A "list URLs" command is now included, so that the currently
stored URLs can be easily viewed and identified from the command line. In
addition, the bookmark file now uses LI/OL tags so that the URLs are
numbered when the bookmarks are viewed with a browser.

[037] - libextractor 0.2.4
  by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 00:12

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Software Development :: Libraries

About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks or WWW-indexing bots with a universal
library to obtain simple keywords to match against queries. libextractor
contains a shell-command "extract" that, similar to the well-known "file"
command, can extract meta-data from a file and print the results to
stdout. Currently, it supports the formats HTML, PDF, PS, MP3, OGG, JPEG,
GIF, PNG, RPM, ZIP, Real, QT and ASF. Also, various additional MIME types
are detected.

Changes: This release contains a new generic extractor that extracts
spell-checking words from binaries. Furthermore, the performance of
keyword extraction was greatly improved, reducing the time for large
files to fractions of a second instead of minutes. There are also minor
bugfixes.

[041] - Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator 5.0
  by astormchaser (http://freshmeat.net/users/astormchaser/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 09:36

System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It also comes with finer controls that are easy to use, and can be
configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa, IMAP, and POP.
Traffic can be limited by host IP, subnet, and content blocking.

Changes: There is now a content filter which will allow the admin to
easily block content by creating regular expressions. There is a tool for
constructing rules and also tools to activate or remove them on the fly.
It seems to be very efficient. Advanced reporting tools (not open) were
also released that will allow users to plot host usage, application usage,
or port usage using PHP, MRTG, or HTML. There is also an option to run
continuous plots.

About: PyDDR is a clone of DDR ("Dance Dance Revolution") written in
Python. The idea of DDR is simple. There's a mat with four directional
arrows, and the game scrolls arrows up the screen to the beat while
playing a song. When the arrows reach the top of the screen (not sooner
and not later), the player hits the corresponding arrow on the pad, and
given that it's hit on time with the beat, points are scored. Based on how
well the dance is put together, s/he is graded at the end of the song.
Both keyboard and mat play are supported.

Changes: There is now support for COUPLE and battle mode (native support
is fine, using the converter is still buggy). Start can now be held for
the player options screen, or select for the game options screen. A
"Ready? Go!" screen appears before the song starts. A new "oldschool"
theme similar to earlier mixes was dropped in.

Office/Business

About: Report Writer produces nice-looking PostScript reports that are
defined in an XML file and based on data that are extracted from a
database. The extraction is performed with DBIx::Recordset, so the syntax
is the same as the syntax used by that package. A sample XML file is
included. This file (trialbal.xml) is a report for Trial Balance from the
FreeMoney project. The XML file contains sections for database, extraction
criteria (the "search" section), page header, breaks (which is where
Report Writer will make a nice total for you), and fields.

[059] - safecat 1.11
  by Len Budney (http://freshmeat.net/users/budney/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 09:58

Text Processing

About: Safecat copies standard input to a qmail-style maildir as reliably
and quickly as qmail itself. It can be used to deliver mail messages to
qmail folders, or to spool data securely for later use by
non-email-related applications. Safecat was originally written as a
spooling utility for a CGI-based data collection application; it was
inspired by the super-reliability of Dan Bernstein's maildir algorithm.

Changes: This release fixes a bug that was introduced in version 1.10
which allowed garbage characters into filenames. Upgrading from 1.10 to
1.11 should be considered mandatory, while upgrading from earlier versions
is optional.

About: samhain is a daemon that can check file integrity, search the file
tree for SUID files, and detect kernel module rootkits (Linux only). It
can be used either standalone or as a client/server system for centralized
monitoring, with strong (192-bit AES) encryption for client/server
connections and the option to store databases and configuration files on
the server. For tamper resistance, it supports signed
database/configuration files and signed reports/audit logs. It has been
tested on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and Unixware.

Changes: This release fixes a segfault that was triggered by SIGABRT. The
khide option has been updated for the Red Hat 2.4.20-18.9 kernel. Some
minor bugs and typos in the installation scripts and documentation have
been corrected.

About: Scout Tracker allows Scout leaders and Scouts to track their
troop's progress online.

Changes: A backspace bug that allowed a user to log off but still change
the database has been fixed. Patch numbers have been added to page
headers. Information for parents of scouts, email for each user,
navigation after modifying scout information, change user info in user
navigation, and a forgotten username/password feature have been added.
Selected users can change scout info (e.g. a parent/guardian can update a
scout's personal info). The initial screen has been changed to display
less personal data on a scout. The info screen displays a scout's personal

[062] - Seminole Webserver 2.32 (Stable)
  by Mark Grosberg (http://freshmeat.net/users/myg/)
  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 09:48

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems

About: Seminole Webserver is a portable Web server designed to be used in
embedded systems, where memory space is at a premium. It is written in
C++, and has a mechanism to direct requests to application-specific code,
complete with the decoding of "CGI" parameters. It also includes a
"filesystem" that can package up Web content (and optionally compress it)
and store it in a ROM or other "flat" device. It comes with a simple
example to make it a standalone Webserver under POSIX platforms for
evaluation and testing.

Changes: The most prominent change in this release is the addition of SSL
support. In order to support SSL, a generic mechanism for selecting
different transports has been added. This framework allows additional
transports (besides TCP and SSL) to be easily added. The framework is
optional and can be disabled to keep code size down for configurations
needing only one transport. This release also includes several bugfixes.

  Tuesday, July 1st 2003 16:17

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules

About: Zoidberg provides a modular Perl shell written, configured, and
operated entirely in Perl. It aspires to be a fully operational login
shell with all the features one normally expects. But it also gives direct
access to Perl objects and data structures from the command line, and
allows you to run Perl code within the scope of your commandline.

Changes: This release is the product of 4 months of aggressive
refactoring. So although many features included in the previous release
are broken, the framework is more solid. The next release will probably
bring back many of the old broken features. The configuration of plugins
and the internal parser have been greatly changed. The latter is now
working with proper parse trees, allowing the future development of IPC
features.
