Fractal Software
by Edwin Young (http://freshmeat.net/~edwiny/)
Section: Category Reviews
Saturday, April 26th 2003 00:00

Ever since I first stayed up late watching an 8-bit computer painstakingly
draw a Mandelbrot set, I've been fascinated by fractals. Of course, I had
to write a fractal-generating program of my own straight away; the
combination of the amazingly simple math required to produce the
Mandelbrot set and the amazing graphics that came out was irresistible.
Clearly, I'm not alone; every programmer with even the slightest interest
in math writes a fractal program at some point, and a good number of these
are now available as Open Source. Here's a brief, opinionated, and
decidedly non-exhaustive survey of some of the programs I've found.

[001] - Alleyoop 0.7.1
  by Jeffrey Stedfast (http://freshmeat.net/users/fejj/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 16:36

Desktop Environment :: Gnome 2
Software Development
Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Alleyoop is a GNOME frontend to the Valgrind memory checker. Its
features include a right-click context menu to intelligently suppress
errors or launch an editor on the source file, jumping to the exact line
of the error condition. A searchbar at the top of the viewer can be used
to limit the viewable errors to those that match the regex criteria
entered. A fully functional Suppressions editor is also included.

Changes: Support for using a user-specified editor commandline when
opening source files.

[003] - Autoconf Macro Archive 0.5.51 (SF-NET)
  by Guido Draheim (http://freshmeat.net/users/guidod/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 06:58

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: The Autoconf Macro Archive provides documented and tested macros
that are useful to many software writers using the autoconf tool, but too
 specific to be included into autoconf itself.

Changes: Macros can now be marked "obsolete" instead of just being
deleted; the "acinclude" tool will detect and warn about the situation and
recommend an alternative. More documentation has been added, and some
steps taken to merge the branches.

[006] - darcs 0.9.7
  by David Roundy (http://freshmeat.net/users/droundy/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 05:54

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Darcs is an advanced revision control system along the lines of CVS
or arch. It has two particularly distinctive features which differ from
other revision control systems: each copy of the source is a fully
functional branch, and underlying it is a consistent and powerful theory
of patches (the latter being darcs' most important feature).

Changes: A couple of bugs involving file renaming conflicts have been
fixed. A new test suite has been added. Several major optimizations for
speed and memory have been made, particularly in the realm of reading and
writing patch files.

[007] - DBMonster 0.3.1 (Development)
  by Piotr Maj (http://freshmeat.net/users/majek/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 11:24

Database

About: DBMonster is a tool which helps database application developers
with tuning the structure of the database, tuning the usage of indexes,
and testing the application performance under heavy database load.
DBMonster generates as much random data as you wish and puts it into an
SQL database. It provides a very pluggable interface and is trivial to
use.

Changes: A problem with case-sensitive table and column names was fixed.
Dictionaries paths are now resolved relative to the schema file instead of
the working directory. It is now possible to mark a column as database
default so that DBMonster will skip this column in the generation process.

[009] - dvd::rip 0.50.11 (Stable)
  by Jörn Reder (http://freshmeat.net/users/jred/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 09:46

Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: dvd::rip is a full featured DVD copy program written in Perl. It
provides an easy-to-use but feature-rich GTK+ GUI to control almost all
aspects of the ripping and transcoding process. It uses the widely known
video processing swissknife, transcode, and many other Open Source tools.

Changes: This release fixes a bunch of minor bugs. "dvdrip -v" reported
nothing instead of the version number. Transcoding movies without audio in
between the first few MB didn't work. A workaround for a transcode bug
which prevents correct fps detection from DVD source was applied. The
progress bar isn't messed up anymore wheen PSU core is enabled. The
cluster mode doesm't depend anymore on dr_exec to be installed on remote
nodes.

[019] - ifGraph 0.4.9rc1 (Release Candidate)
  by Ricardo Sartori (http://freshmeat.net/users/sartori/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 13:58

About: ifGraph is a set of Perl scripts created to help network
administrators to visualize network flow on a daily, weekly, monthly, and
yearly basis. The graphics are created with RRDTool, and it shows bytes
(in/out) and errors for each interface. It also shows the
current/average/max use and the respective link/interface usage in
percentages. The program also outputs HTML files to make the visualization
of the PNG/GIF/GD images more friendly and easy.

Changes: The graph=(true|yes|no|false) directive was added. makegraph.pl
now understands the $time_*$ variables in the graphics titles. The -s flag
was added to the find-if.pl script. The programs now understand the
XXXX:XXXX:XXXX, XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX, and 0xXXXXXXXXXXXX MAC address formats.
A bug that was not correctly setting the defaults for the options and
colors directives was fixed. The following "anti-options" were added:
error, noinvert, norigid, legend, and info. Some other bugs were fixed,
and the snmpQuery function was split into smaller functions.

[024] - IzPack 3.0.8 (Stable)
  by Julien Ponge (http://freshmeat.net/users/JPz/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 05:23

Software Development
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution

About: IzPack is a powerful Java installer builder. It is able to create
lightweight and modular installers. You have the choice of the installer
panels you want to use (some can do the same job, so that you can select
the one you prefer), and you even have the choice of the kind of installer
that you want to use. IzPack doesn't use any portion of native code, it is
designed to be fully independent from the operating system that runs it.
It is very easy for the end user with a properly installed JVM to use an
installer made with IzPack, since a single "java -jar installer.jar" will
launch it.

Changes: This release adds Packs OS targeting, improved OS selection
accuracy, a Russian langpack update, and a directory creation patch. The
standard installers can now use the native look and feel if the
"useNativeLAF" resource is specified (a nice feature, especially with the
incoming JDK 1.4.2). The standard installers get back the button icons and
highlighting effects.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: jRevProxy is a lightweight reverse proxy server fully written in
Java. It accepts HTTP and HTTPS external requests and translates these
into new internal requests based on a set of rules. HTTPS with client side
authentication (X509 certificates) is supported.

Changes: Chunked data transfer support has been added. A pattern-based URL
rewriting filter has been added to modify absolute paths that do not
contain the hostname. Socket I/O was improved, and a "Nullpointer
exception" bug was fixed that occurred when jRevProxy was configured to
handle HTTP requests.

Scientific/Engineering

About: Magic-Dic is a multilingual dictionary program for the console. It
supports searching coevally in global and user dictionaries, with either
exact or inexact matching, and simultaneous searching in more than in one
dictionary language (to study similarities between languages). New
dictionary entries can also be created in multi-lingual insert mode,
allowing you to automatically create all dictionary language pairs at once
by translating a word to many different languages. New entries into user
dictionaries are emailed to a central location, where they are all merged
into the central source for Magic-Dic's global dictionaries. This system
is designed to allow many people to build free wordlists in any language
combination. A subscription system allows users to receive and filter
updates and to respond to these updates in several different ways.

Changes: The order of DEFAULT dictionaries now adapts to installed the
dictionaries. Some fixes were made to the dimod-winsize module. Problems
determining the LINES and COLUMNS on different systems using resize were
fixed by using stty size. An adaption for the FreeBSD "cons25" console was
made to eliminate extra empty lines.

[038] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.1.1
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Saturday, April 26th 2003 23:12

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of four
lightweight system daemons written in Perl and C that are designed to work
with Linux firewalling code (iptables in the 2.4.x kernels, and ipchains
in the 2.2.x kernels) to detect port scans. It features a set of highly
configurable danger thresholds (with sensible defaults provided), verbose
alert messages that include the source, destination, scanned port range,
begin and end times, TCP flags and corresponding nmap options (Linux 2.4.x
kernels only), email alerting, and automatic blocking of offending IP
addresses via dynamic configuration of ipchains/iptables firewall
rulesets. In addition, for the 2.4.x kernels psad incorporates many of the
TCP, UDP, and ICMP signatures included in Snort to detect highly suspect
scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven),
DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port scans (syn, fin, Xmas)
which are easily leveraged against a machine via nmap.

Changes: Incorrect handling of %scan hash keys associated with TCP/UDP
when the current protocol is ICMP was fixed, as this caused disk
utilization problems by generating warnings for every ICMP packet. A
problem with strictness with the iptables default log string was fixed.
The USR1 signal handler was reworked so that the Data::Dumper function
call is made in the main part of the code. A problem with leading
whitespace in auto_ips was fixed, and a startup message was added to psad.

System :: Logging

About: The Prelude Log Monitoring Lackey (LML) is the host-based sensor
program part of the Prelude Hybrid IDS suite. It can act as a centralized
log collector for local or remote systems, or as a simple log analyzer
(such as swatch). It can run as a network server listening on a syslog
port or analyze log files. It supports logfiles in the BSD syslog format
and is able to analyze any logfile by using the PCRE library. It can apply
logfile-specific analysis through plugins such as PAX. It can send an
alert to the Prelude Manager when a suspicious log entry is detected.

Changes: Logfile metadata was implemented for better log analysis across
LML runs. A 64-bit logfile size is now supported. Runtime detection and
workaround of the FAM (Dnotify) writev() Linux kernel bug is now done.
Restart on SIGHUP was implemented. Handling of source and destination
address when emiting alert from a signature was implemented. New rulesets
were added for Exim, ProFTPD, Vpopmail, Qpopper, Squid, NtSyslog, Nokia
Ipso, and Checkpoint.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: XmlBlaster is XML based MOM (Message oriented Middleware) with a
lot of features. It is a publish/subscribe and point-to-point MOM server
which exchanges XML-encoded messages. Communication with the server is
based on CORBA (using JacORB), RMI, XML-RPC, native socket, or a
persistent HTTP plugin. Subscribers can use XPath expressions to filter
the messages they wish to receive and add their own MIME-based filter
plugins. C/C++, Java, Perl and PHP client demos are included in the
xmlBlaster test suite, and Tcl and Python demo clients are scheduled.
XmlBlaster also provides a browser callback framework, allowing browsers
(Netscape, Mozilla, MSIE) to receive instant callbacks over a persistent
http connection. A security plugin framework allows
authentication/authorization in many ways. Currently there are LDAP- and
passwd-based plugins available.

Changes: This release adds bugfixes and a new Python client library.

files, both with the same filepath. The zip-archive can be used in the
place of a normal subdirectory. It is written in portable C.

Changes: This release adds some bugfixes and changes in the build system
to allow for subdir builds.
