Internet
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: alived is a simple daemon and client for sending keepalive
messages. The server keeps a list of hostname to IP address, useful for
when a remote DHCP client changes IP addresses.

Changes: alived now maintains the 'last heard from' time. alive only runs
once and exits; please add it to a startup script and/or a cron job.
alookup's output was cleaned up, and the last-heard-from time was added.

[002] - b-frame 0.1.2
  by b-frame.org (http://freshmeat.net/users/bframe/)
  Sunday, March 23rd 2003 21:01

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: b-frame is a framework for rapid J2EE development. It is based on
the assumption that it is possible to create business (i.e. transactional
client server) applications just from knowing their structure. It defines
sets of XML tags for describing databases and applications operating on
these databases (application layer) and template implementations
(implementation layer), respectively. It provides XSLT-stylesheets (core
layer) for merging the user provided application layer and the template
layer into real applications. By default, it comes with a J2EE
implementation layer.

Changes: This release removes the restriction that applications have to
reside under the b-frame tree and allows to some extent the customization
of masks.

About: Card Munger is a set of tools (including card2latex) that are used
to typeset little 'cards' (which look like business cards) from plain-text
emailable originals. These cards are used to implement an economic system
that functions without currency. Each card tells other people about the
holders needs and abilities. The system's community members do things
freely for one another, without asking for payment, and without bartering.
No one keeps score. Each person simply takes care that her or his own life
is balanced and unexploited. This system encourages cooperation and
sharing. People who participate are under no obligation to provide any
service, or to continue playing, and there is no possibility of debt or
obligation.

About: Foomatic is the printer/driver database of Linuxprinting.org. The
XML-based system integrates free software printer drivers with all common
spoolers (CUPS, LPRng, LPD, GNUlpr, PPR, PDQ, CPS, etc.) in UNIX. It
generates printer/driver description files which, together with
spooler-specific filter scripts, allow easy setup of print queues with
access to all driver options. Foomatic ships with every major Linux distro
and its Web site is used as a reference by vendors. It is an up-to-date
and distribution-independent repository of printer and driver data,
scripts, and utilities, accompanied by the wealth of knowledge, tips and
tricks, solutions, and enlightenment provided by its newsgroups.

Changes: A new facility to build a package with all Foomatic PPD files,
new "foomatic-rip" and "foomatic-gswrapper" commands for easy printer
setup, improved Adobe-compliance of the generated PPD files ("Resolution"
option, numerical options, etc.), more auto-detection info in the PPDs,
bugfixes (an OpenOffice.org crash on Foomatic PPD files, custom paper
sizes and "PrintoutMode" settings in PostScript data stream ignored, and
broken USB URIs for CUPS), and a workaround for buggy PostScript produced

  Sunday, March 23rd 2003 09:04

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: gtkpod is a platform-independent GUI for Apple's iPod using GTK 2.
It allows you to import your existing iTunes database, add/delete

[020] - Intrusion Detection Exchange Architecture 1.1.0
  by Ian Duffy (http://freshmeat.net/users/duffian/)
  Sunday, March 23rd 2003 20:53

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Internet :: Log Analysis
Security

About: IDEA is an architecture for implementing a distributed intrusion
detection system on a computer network. It provides a way to incorporate
many different IDS sensors into an architecture, and have them report to
a central IDS server. This server collects, aggregates, and correlates
data from the sensors, providing a unified view of network activity. By
specifying an open API, many different clients can connect to the IDEA
server and "subscribe" to the event notification service so that the
client will be notified any time a new alert is received from any of the
sensors.

Changes: Numerous internal changes/bugfixes/code cleanups, modularized
code so that it should be much easier to write modules to work with the
console and server, new observer interfaces for the AlertList, HotIPList,
and SensorList (any Java class that implements the interface will receive
notifications as to when there are changes made to the lists), initial
IDEA server user-auth code, fixes to a bunch of the database code to make
it more modular now, and segregating code for the Menu bar from the code
for the console.

[026] - libinterbase++ 0.0.196
  by logicomm (http://freshmeat.net/users/logicomm/)
  Sunday, March 23rd 2003 09:27

Database
Software Development :: Libraries

About: libinterbase++ is just a thin C++ encapsulation layer on top of the
original Interbase/Firebird C API. It provides support for databases
(attach, detach, and get information about them), transactions (start,
end, and control a transaction context), and tatements and queries (run
SQL statements against a database). The library itself does not add any
extra features not found in the original APIs; it should be quite fast,
efficient and flexible. It has a very limited footprint in terms of binary
size, so it's also suitable for CGI programming or little applications.

Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy

About: libnova is a general purpose, double precision, celestial mechanics
and astronomical calculation library. It can calculate aberration,
nutation, apparent position, dynamical time, Julian day, precession,
proper motion, sidereal time, solar coordinates (using VSOP87), coordinate
transformations, planetary positions (Mercury - Neptune using VSOP87),
planetary magnitude, illuminated disk and phase angle, lunar position
(using ELP82), phase angle, elliptic motion of bodies (Asteroid + Comet
positional and orbit data), asteroid + comet magnitudes, parabolic motion
of bodies (comet positional data), orbit velocities and lengths,
atmospheric refraction, rise/set/transit times, and semidiameters of the
Sun, Moon, planets, and asteroids.

Changes: Several correct quadrant bugs in the position calculations for
Moon, Planets, Comets, and Asteroids were fixed. Lunar ascending node and
perigee longitudes were added.

[029] - Linux Virtual Server 1.1.3 (IPVS for kernel 2.5)
  by Wensong Zhang (http://freshmeat.net/users/wensongzhang/)
  Sunday, March 23rd 2003 22:01

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: The Linux Virtual Server Project is an Open Source project to
cluster many real servers together into a highly available,
high-performance virtual server. The LVS handles connections from clients
and passes them on the the real servers (so-called Layer 4 switching) and
can virtualize almost any TCP or UDP service, like HTTP, HTTPS, NNTP, FTP,
DNS, ssh, POP3, IMAP4, SMTP, etc. It is fully transparent to the client
accessing the virtual service.

Changes: This version adds the ip_vs_use_count_inc/ip_vs_use_count_dec, so
that it is easy to adapt the code to the module handling change in the
Linux kernel 2.5.xx. It updates the module using count handling code to
the kernel 2.5.65, updates the IPVS sync daemon code to the kernel 2.5.65,
changes the overhead ratio of active/inactive connections from 50 to 256,
because too small a ratio number may lead to load imbalance under highly
loaded sites. There were also some code cleanups.

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Lutel Firewall Script is a Linux iptables shell script written in
bash for use as a firewall and NAT/masquerade router for home networks or
multiple subnet applications. It shares access to an Internet connection
from multiple workstations. Its main features are support for interface
aliases, per subnet traffic definitions, UID and GID of packet owner
restrictions, length of packet restrictions, SYN / flood protection,
disabling routing between subnets, masquerading setups per subnet,
transparent proxy support, port redirection, anti-spoof protection, TOS
optimization, predefinied netfilter marking for 3rd party traffic shapers
(such as tc), DHCP support, FTP active and passive mode support, and
ZorbipTraffic.

Changes: Support for multiple external interfaces and new port range
support in traffic definition were added. Now it is possible to define NAT
rules using interface names (helpful in case of dynamic IP of external
interface). Minor bugfixes and cleanups were also made.

About: Mailsync is a way of synchronizing a collection of mailboxes. The
algorithm is a 3-way diff. Two mailboxes are simultaneously compared to a
record of the state of both mailboxes at last sync. New messages and
message deletions are propagated between the two mailboxes. Mailsync can
synchronize local mailbox files in many formats and remote mailboxes over
IMAP, POP, and IMAPS.

About: MP3 STATION is a plain text Linux/Unix tool set for managing MP3
playback in a car with as little user interaction as possible. It can
restart the last playlist at the last played track, transparently load
directories, transparently recompile playlists, and keep a repository of
all the playlists. It is a simple ncurses client for comunicating with
cm3s. All programs run under a non-privileged user account.

Changes: A configurable skip-printing-frames option was added to the
configure script. This is meant to help solve the mysterious buzz bug. The
backplay repeat loop bug was fixed, so playlist repeat now also works in
backplaymode. Miscellaneous cleanups were made for unecessary debug
messages. A bug introduced with the NOP in the cm3s protocol was fixed.
The "b" button was added to the client to toggle playlist order. A parser
for the new feature added in the cm3s protocol (BACKPLAY) was added. The

[063] - Veejay 0.3.3rc2

  Sunday, March 23rd 2003 16:46

Multimedia
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Video

About: Veejay is a video tracker/editing tool for Linux, which is similar
in concept to FastTracker and ProTracker but for video. You can make video
samples and line them up on a pattern. You can set looptype, playback
speed and do a number of effects or transitions on them while playing back
from multiple video sources in realtime. The project emphasizes direct
(user) interaction. It is possible to navigate through video samples,
define various types of looping, increase and decrease playback speed, and
navigate through the effect chain to apply a chain of effects using the
keyboard while the interface keeps track of what you are doing.

Changes: Release candidate 2 is a not only a bugfix for 0.3.3, it adds the
following features, many of them were requests from users: DirectFB
support (for Matrox G550 Tv-Out users), multiple video4linux devices,
playback/editing of DV avi type 2, ability to stream from a FIFO or file
directly into veejay, backport of the overlay magic effect, support in the
vjrender utility for MJPEG, YUV4MPEG, and DV AVI type 2, XML-formatted
samplelists, and new export settings in gveejay.
