Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Helma (also called Hop, for Helma object publisher) is a scriptable
web application server written in Java. It lets you define object
prototypes and map them to relational database tables. These so-called
HopObjects can be created, modified, and deleted using a comfortable
object/container model. Hence, no manual fiddling around with database
code is necessary. HopObjects are extended JavaScript objects which can be
scripted using server-side JavaScript. Beyond the common JavaScript
features, Helma provides comfortable skinning and templating
functionalities which facilitate the rendering of objects via a web
interface. It's also possible to use the skin-and-macro layer separately
from the persistence layer, providing a nice scriptable presentation layer
to arbitrary Java object models.

Changes: This is the first feature complete and stable release of Helma.
Major enhancements were made in object-relational binding, XML
integration, and Web support.

  Thursday, December 12th 2002 05:32

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Libxml is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. The
library code is portable (to Linux, Unix, Windows, embedded systems, etc.)
and modular; most of the extensions can be compiled out. Libxml implements
a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, RFC 2396, XPath, XPointer,
HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases, libxml
tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To some
extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but doesn't
claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, SAX, and DocBook
SGML. Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress.

Changes: Release 2.4.29 broke the Python bindings. 2.4.30 fixes them and
the API XML description.

  by perbu (http://freshmeat.net/users/perbu/)
  Thursday, December 12th 2002 04:24

About: lvs-kiss is designed to make load-balancing with fail-over simpler.
The primary design-goal is for you to get load-balancing with fail-over up

to make this software as flexible as possible. Embedding of perl in
configuration-files and load-balancing with custom made tests should be
possible without too much hassle.

Changes: This version includes a new keyword in the RIP section,
LoadFactor. The init script was rewritten to be more portable. There are
many improvements to the documentation. The validity of the configuration
file is now checked before starting up, and the configuration file is

[035] - motor 3.2.4
  by Konstantin Klyagin (http://freshmeat.net/users/konst/)
  Thursday, December 12th 2002 10:20

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Motor is a text-mode integrated programming environment for Linux.
It consists of an editor with syntax highlighting, a project manager, a
makefile generator, gcc, ctags, gdb, autoconf/automake and grep
front-ends. CVS integration is also provided. It allows one to edit,
compile, and debug programs without a need to leave the IDE, automatically
check in/out files from a CVS repository and import projects into CVS, and
generate distribution packages (tar.gz and RPM). The color schemes are
customisable.

Changes: More rules to track linking errors have been added. If it's not
possible to import a particular file into the version control system, a
question is now asked about whether the IDE should only add the file
locally. In the "from files" creation mode, when a project is created, the
generated Makefile.in and Makefile files are not imported now. When the
IDE refuses to add a file with a certain extension to a project folder,
the reason is now displayed in the status line in the bottom of the
screen.

About: Verlof is a Web application for registering and viewing leave
information. It records hours of leave rights and hours of leave within
categories like normal leave, special leave, reduced working-hours (ADV),
and the begin and end dates for the leave's period. The few rules imposed
on the entries are mainly sanity checks like "begin date is in the
weekend". The act of entering a new leave entry sends an email to the
group manager and a copy to the employee. The advantages of this
electronic version over the paper version are: there is a single
information location (no employee-card and mother-card discrepancies),
questionable entries immediately draw the manager's attention (with
email), and various up-to-date views of the leave history are available
(total, year, and list). Verlof is a Dutch-only application and a little

[056] - VServer 0.22
  by Prakash Shetty aka crux (http://freshmeat.net/users/crux/)
  Thursday, December 12th 2002 09:19

About: VServer virtual servers operate like a normal Linux server, but
allow many independent servers to be run simultaneously in one box. These
can involve normal services such as telnet, mail, Web, and SQL servers -
in most cases using a standard configuration. The services are unaware of
the virtual server concept. Each virtual server has its own user account
database and root password. Each vserver uses standard packages and runs
at the same speed as a non-VServer installation.

Changes: A new kernel patch is available: kernel 2.4.19ctx-15. Now you can
exclude a few directories. Only the directory structure will be copied.
When cloning a vserver, you can generate new sshd private keys. The IPROOT
entry in the vserver configuration file now supports one netmask per
entry. A vserver does not use its own init process unless fakeinit is
used. When using vbuild to clone a vserver, you can use the --excldir
option repeatedly to exclude some files.

automated email reminders, contacts, and Web-based administration. One
installation can support multiple users and each user can set up as many
POP3 accounts as they need.

Changes: The Webtop will now default to ISO-8859-1 character encoding (ISO
Latin). The character encoding is now configurable by modifying the webtop
configuration file. This release also fixes several minor bugs, such as
problems saving an image to the webdrive from an email and possible email
filter processing issues.

About: wmnetload is a network interface monitor dockapp for Window Maker.
It is designed to fit well with dockapps like wmcpuload and wmmemmon. It
tracks whether the interface is functioning and displays current network
interface throughput, along with an auto-scaling graph of recent network
activity (the graph separates upstream and downstream traffic load cleanly
without resorting to colors).

Changes: <X11/xpm.h> detection has been corrected to work with GCC 3.0,
and there are other minor build enhancements.
