About: ADODB is a set of advanced PHP database abtraction classes. It
supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Interbase/Firebird, Informix, Sybase SQL
Anywhere, Oracle, MS SQL 7, Sybase, DB2, FrontBase, Foxpro, Access, ADO,
and generic ODBC. A metatype system is built in, making it possible to
figure out that types such as CHAR, TEXT, and STRING are equivalent in
different databases. It also features an SQL to HTML popup menu and SQL to
HTML table support. It has code to support record paging and blob/clob
support.

Changes: This is a test release before 3.0 is released. adoconnection and
adorecordset were moved to their own files, SetFetchMode( ) works on a per
connection basis, and misc. bugfixes were made. A new ServerInfo()
function was also added that returns the database version number.

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Systems Administration

About: AFD is a program to automatically distribute files either locally
or to remote hosts. The files are distributed by using FTP or SMTP, and
can be sent in parallel and with priority. It provides a GUI to monitor
and control the distribution and extensive logging of all activities.

Changes: The dialog afd_ctrl has optional short lines to reduce the window
size when you have many hosts. An option to extract GRIB files has been
added. The default age limit can be configured in the AFD_CONFIG file.
Delete the remote file if the FTP command RNTO fails or if it fails to
open the remote file. There is a new option, overwrite, that allows
overwriting of files during renaming, so no file names with a semicolon
are created.

Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting

About: In order to leave Windows behind most people need a
fully-functional money management program. CheckBook Tracker seeks to
solve that problem. It has the feel and features of packages like
Microsoft Money without requiring the user to build their own sources or
find an RPM for their distribution. Its features include Import / Export
QIF files straight from Money or Quicken, autocomplete, check printing,
split transactions, balance forecasts and more.

Changes: A crash bug with auto-entered transactions was fixed, along with
a problem with auto-entered transactions refusing to enter as debits. More
QIF import issues with old Quicken files were fixed, and check printing
capitalization was made more uniform. The sound subsystem was redesigned
and is now more stable and compatible. Sorting by date for scheduled
transactions was added, along with icons for menu items, a manual backup
to floppy process, and more behind-the-scenes changes.

eliminating pictures with similar content as well as the normal
compression obtained by the mpeg process. The result is a time lapse video
per day with nonlinear time compression using only the images of interest.

Changes: A console version has been added, and a Web cam can now keep
track of activity in your file server room. Information for users having
problems building the program under RedHat 7.3 and 8.0 due to gettext has

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Libxml is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. The
library code is portable (to Linux, Unix, Windows, embedded systems, etc.)
and modular; most of the extensions can be compiled out. Libxml implements
a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, RFC 2396, XPath, XPointer,
HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases, libxml
tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To some
extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but doesn't
claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, SAX, and DocBook
SGML. Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress.

Changes: There are Windows and Python bindings, a fixed XHTML1 dump, and
URL escaping. A TextXmlReader (C#) like API (work in progress) has been

System :: Installation/Setup

About: mkCDrec (Make CD-ROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito)
disaster recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or
more CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored
on another disk, NFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or system
intrusion, the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore
the complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning, which allows
one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have
to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition layout itself).
Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs, XFS, and JFS
filesystems are supported. mkCdrec is also able to restore disks in
Software RAID and LVM mode.

Changes: There are plenty of bugfixes (see the Changelog file for the
complete overview). A new feature is added, FORCE_DHCP_SUPPORT, which is
useful for cloning purposes. Busybox is updated to 0.60.5, and syslinux to
2.0.0. Initial porting steps to the PPC platform are included. A
prerequisite test is now forced at least once.

  by daniel pearson (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpearson/)
  Wednesday, December 11th 2002 09:54

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Moosic is a music player that focuses on easy playlist management.
It consists of a server process that maintains a queue of music files to
play and a client program which sends commands to the server. The server
continually runs through its playlist, popping items off the top of the
list and playing each with an external program. The client is a simple
command-line utility which allows you to perform powerful operations upon
the server's queue, including the addition of whole directory trees,
automatic shuffling, and item removal according to regular expressions.
The server comes configured to play MP3, Ogg, MIDI, MOD, and WAV files.

Changes: The internal implementation has been completely revised, but only
a few relatively minor user-visible features were added. The output of
player commands is now logged. The "unpause", "stagger", and
"partial-sort" commands were added to the client. The regular expressions
in the ~/.moosic/config file are no longer implicitly case-insensitive.
Case insensitive matching must now be explicitly requested in the config
file by adding the "(?i)" switch to the regexps (which has been done in
the default config file).

  by Sebastian Bergmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/gravedancer/)
  Wednesday, December 11th 2002 06:42

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Page Counters

About: phpOpenTracker is a framework solution for the analysis of Web site
traffic and visitor behaviour. It features a logging engine that, either
invoked as a Web bug by an HTML image tag or embedded with two lines of
code into your PHP application, logs each request to a Web site into a
database. One installation can track an arbitrary number of Web sites.
Through its API, you can easily access the gathered data and perform
complex operations on it (for instance, the analysis of your visitors'
click paths).

Changes: This release, apart from fixing a couple of bugs, revamps the
Clickpath Analysis API Calls, improving both their performance and
versatility.

[069] - schedutils 1.1.0
  by rml (http://freshmeat.net/users/rml/)
  Wednesday, December 11th 2002 18:22

Utilities

About: The Linux scheduler utilities take advantage of the scheduler
family of syscalls that Linux implements across various kernels. These
system calls implement interfaces for scheduler-related parameters such as
CPU affinity and real-time attributes. The standard UNIX utilities do not
provide support for these interfaces, thus this package. The programs that
are included in this package are chrt, irqset, lsrt, and taskset. Together
with nice and renice (not included), they allow full control of process
scheduling parameters.

Changes: New changes since 1.0.0 include no longer needing "--" with chrt
or taskset when specifying a command, Makefile cleanup, removal of need
for autoconf, no more configure script, updated spec file, and new min/max
priority display with chrt. You can now build on Red Hat 8.0 (workaround
for glibc 2.3 bug).

[079] - SQL Load Balancer 2.4.7
  by RUAUDEL Frédéric (http://freshmeat.net/users/grumz/)
  Wednesday, December 11th 2002 09:20

Database

About: The SQLB (SQL Load Balancer) project is used to improve SQL
requests to a database. It provides programs that have permanent
connections to a DB, a program that checks the integrity of transactions,
and a library to link with programs that need to make SQL queries. SQLB
supports Oracle8i, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.

Changes: The query log now displays the correct execution time. When an
SQL query returns an error, the error message is now displayed in the
error log. The "sqlb start" command is now more reliable and always runs
sqlb as the "sqlb" user, even when launched by root. An init script has
been added to the package. The configure script now correctly detects
MySQL and readline. Now you can define the number of database connection
you want per connection pool. The licencing policy have been clarified.

Changes: EDACS talk group IDs can be entered and displayed in either
decimal or AFS format. When inserting new channels through the GUI, the
new channel's Unused flag will be cleared and the Unused flags for
channels higher in the bank will be moved along with the frequency, label,
and other fields. An error message will be displayed if a conventional
type bank contains talk groups. Additional balloon help windows explain
controls for new users.

  Wednesday, December 11th 2002 08:58

Internet
System

About: vHost is a one-step solution for all virtual hosting needs. It
enables a Linux/BSD server with single or multiple IP addresses to handle
unlimited Web/FTP/email domains. It comes with both command-line and
Web-based graphical user interface, which gives maximum control to a
domain's owner, while relieving the system administrator of most routine
administration tasks. The latest version also offers a "clustering"
capability.

Changes: This is the first announcement of the 3.00 release series on
Freshmeat. vHost 3.00 is completely redesigned and rewritten, with a fully
modularized architecture and cross platform support (Linux/BSD). Other
major improvements include a distributed system (clustering), four levels
of login, a comprehensive quota system, built-in log rotation, virtual
user home/Web space, Postfix support, IMAP (SquirrelMail) support, and an
improved Web GUI.

[091] - xine 1-beta0 (xine-lib)
  by Siggi (http://freshmeat.net/users/siggi/)
  Wednesday, December 11th 2002 09:51

Multimedia :: Video :: Display

About: xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and
VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from
local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet. It
interprets many of the most common multimedia formats available--and some
of the most uncommon formats, too. All those features come in a reusable
library (xine-lib) which can easily be embedded in your applications.

Changes: This is the first "beta" release of libxine1. It comes with quite
a few bugfixes. Most importantly, it shouldn't require any automake or
autoconf installation, which caused lots of trouble for some people trying
1-alpha3. With this release, the xine engine has entered a state of
"feature chill", i.e. developers are now focusing on bugfixes, and new
features should only be added in the form of new plugins.

circumstances, a problem with restarting the network listener on a
different port without notifying the server, and some other smaller
things. It also adds Chinese and Dutch as available user interface
languages.
