About: The free Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader allows you to view, navigate,
and print PDF files across all major computing platforms. Acrobat Reader is
the free viewing companion to Adobe Acrobat 4.0 and to Acrobat Capture(R)
software.

Changes: This release supports all the features of the latest Windows

  by Schwalex (http://freshmeat.net/users/Schwalex/)

Education Multimedia :: Graphics Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: aiSee reads a textual, easy-to-read, and easy-to-learn graph
specification and automatically calculates a customizable graph layout.
This layout is then displayed, and can be printed or interactively
explored. aiSee features 15 basic graph layout algorithms (including
force-directed layout), recursive subgraph nesting, fish-eye views, and an
animation interface. It has been optimized to handle huge graphs
automatically generated by applications (e.g. compilers).

Changes: aiSee now supports exporting graphs to SVG format and allows
hyperlinks to be associated with nodes. Some new command-line options have
been implemented, enabling image parts to be exported instead of the entire
image. This is especially useful for Web-based applications in order to
limit the size of output images or to implement a panning or zooming
feature. Showing node neighbors has been enhanced. Edge orientations and
classes are now considered in the Node Title dialog box. Writing to
existing files has been fixed. A version compiled for MacOS X with X11 is
now available.

[003] - AurigaDoc 1.0.2b (Beta)
  by Khurshidali Shaikh (http://freshmeat.net/users/khurshid/)
  Wednesday, May 22nd 2002 07:05

About: AurigaDoc is a java-xml-xsl based documentation engine for writing
xml documents, and converting them to other open formats like HTML and
pdf. The idea is to keep a single document source (such as XML) and
convert it to various formats using XSLT. While converting the XML to
HTML, you have the option of either creating a single HTML file for the
entire document or multiple HTML files, where each file contains a single
section in the document with links to other sections.

Changes: This release supports more HTML tags when converting to PDF,
advanced HTML formatting using CSS, and generating output in RTF format
using jfor. There were also bugfixes.

Communications :: Email Communications :: Email :: Filters Security

About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use a
MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

  by staf (http://freshmeat.net/users/stafwag/)
  Wednesday, May 22nd 2002 14:47

Communications :: Email

About: cgipaf is a combination of three CGI programs. passwd.cgi, which
allow users to update their password, viewmailcfg.cgi, which allows users
to view their current mail configuration, and mailcfg.cgi, which updates
the mail configuration. All programs use PAM for user authentication. It is
possible to run a script to update SAMBA passwords or NIS configuration
when a password is changed. mailcfg.cgi creates a .procmailrc in the user's
home directory. A user with too many invalid logins can be locked. The
minimum and maximum UID can be set in the configuration file, so you can
specify a range of UIDs that are allowed to use cgipaf.

About: Cjukebox is a management system for audio files and play lists
which relies solely on directory structures instead of a database. When
available, freedb.org database records can be used to improve the
presentation. Playback is handled by the Musicus tool, which directly
uses xmms plug-ins, so all music formats supported by xmms (wav, ogg, mp3,
mpc, etc.) can be played by Cjukebox.

Changes: Made sure that the Musicus procss is killed upon termination of
cjukebox, and added a workaround for a plugin bug that caused songs to be
terminated after a few milliseconds.

About: Codestriker is a Perl CGI script that is used for performing code
reviews in a collaborative fashion, as opposed to using unstructured
emails. Authors create code review topics, the nominated reviewers being
automatically notified by email. Reviewers then submit comments against the
code on a per-line basis, and can view comments submitted by the other
reviewers as they are created. Emails are sent to the appropriate parties,
as an alert mechanism, when comments are created. The author is free to
submit comments against the review comments. Once all reviewers have
finished the author has all review comments available in a structured
fashion, instead of a pile of unstructured emails.

Security System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Easy Firewall Generator is a PHP Web application that generates an
iptables firewall script. The generated script is designed for a single
system connected to the Internet or a system acting as a gateway/firewall
for a small private network. The generator prompts recursively for a
variety of options. When the selected options form a complete set, it
generates and returns a commented firewall script based on those options.
The generator includes documentation on iptables and each option.

Changes: Internal and external DHCP server options, a reduction in the
number of events that are logged by default, fixes for a number of bugs
found in the earlier versions, and cleanups to the format of the firewall
script.

Internet

About: This is a PHP class that attempts to validate a given e-mail address
at three levels: matching the address against a RFC compliant regular
expression, verifing the existence of the destination SMTP server by
verifying the respective DNS MX record, and connecting to that server to
see if the given address is accepted as a valid recipient. The class also
features a debugging output option that lets you see the remote SMTP server
connection and data exchange dialog to see the real cause why an apparently
valid address may not be accepting messages.

Changes: Added support to the exclude_address option for preventing invalid
address domains from being confused with valid sub-domains of the local
default domain.

Internet :: Log Analysis System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: F.L.A.V.I.O. is a data grapher for netflow collectors. It gathers
data from a netflow collector, loads it into a MySQL database and can
generate daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly charts. It shows traffic
split by ports, statistics on total utilization, and generates percentile
95 information suitable for billing in burstable services. It has been
written in Perl using DBD, DBI, and GD modules, and can be easily
extended to support new features or to present data in different formats.

Changes: Preliminary Flow-Tools support was added. Netblock mode support
was added to the customers table, allowing one to set just the first and
the last consecutive IP of a customer. This release breaks compatibility

About: IlohaMail is a light weight yet full featured multilingual webmail
client that is easy to use and install. It runs on a stock build of PHP,
and does not require databases (although database support is available) or
the IMAP library (it is powered by a custom IMAP/POP3 library). It
currently supports most basic functionality, including the ability to read,
file/save, and send messages, create, delete, and rename folders,
send/receive attachments, and search messages. A contacts list is also
included. The user can customize the interface through over two dozen
settings and user defined colors. IlohaMail currently supports English and
Japanese.

Changes: Support for default builds of PHP 4.2 has been added. An
ISO-8859-1 character set handler has also been added for vastly improved
support for many European languages. This release also includes various
bugfixes and enhancements.

About: itrace helps to trace the creation of new files by a particular
process. It is very useful if you want to trace where a "make install" put
new files. It can make two kind of logs. The first type of log only lists
the new files created by the process, while the second type includes such
information as the chmod and chown operations made on the files. itrace was
inspired by the installwatch and checkinstall programs.

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each datum to
present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various data sources and
expose them as contexts and to generate interesting EA. Current
implementations include Native (kernel disk IO with event updates using
fam), xml (mount an xml file as a filesystem), edb (mount a berkeley
database), ffilter (mount an LDAP filter string) and mbox (mount your
mailbox). EA generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: This version was ported to gcc 3.1. Support and preference was
added for DB4 over EDB for mounting Berkeley DB files and storage of
ferris' config data. DB4 support was added to ferriscreate. Some build
fixes were made. The Runner class interface was changed. Many regeression

About: Poe is a system for building network-accessible multiuser portable
applications. It is a programming language and execution environment
designed to be accessible by more than one programmer at a time. It
implements a pure Object-Oriented language, with an instance-based
inheritance model. Persistence and garbage collection are both automatic
and transparent to the programmer. Poe is designed with programmable P2P
conferencing programs, multiplayer online games, and other collaborative
applications in mind.

Changes: This release includes fixes for some reference count bugs that
caused fatal crashes, the addition of some network related features
(including proper disconnection handling and a "detach" primitive), and an
extensible demonstration chat server core written entirely in Poe's
scripting language.

Software Development Software Development :: Code Generators Software
Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Refactorit is a powerful tool for Java developers who expect more
from their standard IDE. With Refactorit, a developer can take source code
of any size and complexity, and rework it into well-designed code by means
of automated refactorings such as Rename
Field/Method/Variable/Class/Package, Extract Method or Move Type. In
addition, Refactorit provides a comprehensive set of smart query functions
that make it possible to analyze and track large volumes of code.
Refactorit may be used as standalone tool or installed as an add-in to IDEs
like NetBeans, Forte, JDeveloper, and JBuilder.

Changes: Incremental compiling also works in JBuilder and JDeveloper. The
bug that slipped into 0.9, making it impossible to refactor if the code had
any errors, has been fixed. Bugs in ExtractMethod have been fixed. First
time parsing is now much faster on NetBeans. Bugs that caused some valid
method calls to be considered invalid have been fixed, as well as about 40
other bugs.

[060] - S tar 1.4 (Release)
  by Jörg Schilling (http://freshmeat.net/users/schily/)
  Wednesday, May 22nd 2002 16:28

System :: Archiving System :: Archiving :: Backup System :: Archiving ::
Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern
matcher, multi-volume support, the ability to archive sparse files and
ACLs, the ability to archive extended file flags, automatic archive format
detection, automatic byte order recognition, automatic archive
compression/decompression, remote archives, and special features that allow
star to be used for full and incremental backups. It includes the only
known platform independent "rmt" server program that hides Linux
incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star package implements all
Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any "rmt" client from any OS to
contact any OS as server.

Changes: Largefile support, ACL support, support for extended file flags
(*BSD/Linux), support for the PAX format (POSIX.1-2001 extended tar),
preparations for true incremental backups (e.g.,. archive all inode
metadata/archive metadata only) to allow up/downward compatibility with
star 1.5, automatic decompression, locking FIFO in memory if run by root
for better tape streaming, speed improvements for several usage profiles,
and several new supported platforms (QNX, BeOS, Gnu-Hurd, etc.).

[061] - samhain 1.5.0
  by rainer (http://freshmeat.net/users/rainer/)
  Wednesday, May 22nd 2002 22:24

Security

About: samhain is a daemon that can check file integrity, search the file
tree for SUID files, and detect kernel module rootkits (Linux only). It can
be used either standalone or as a client/server system for centralized
monitoring, with strong (192-bit AES) encryption for client/server
connections and the option to store databases and configuration files on
the server. For tamper resistance, it supports signed
database/configuration files and signed reports/audit logs. It has been
tested on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and Unixware.

Changes: In this release, support for crontab-style schedules for file
checks has been added. The nosuid mount option is detected on Solaris, gpg
signatures are checked even on files downloaded from the server, the
'update' option is much faster, the 'host' field (for login monitoring) is
logged to the SQL database, the manual has been converted to DocBook, and
the build system has been re-written to avoid some common build errors.

About: Zorp is a proxy firewall suite. Its core framework allows the
administrator to finetune proxy decisions (with its built-in script
language), and fully analyze complex protocols (including SSH with several
forwarded TCP connections, or SSL with an embedded POP3 protocol). FTP,
HTTP, finger, whois, and SSL protocols are fully supported with an
application-level gateway. Zorp aims for compliance with the Common
Cirteria/Application-level Firewall Protection Profile for Medium
Robustness Enviroment.

Changes: A few bugfixes were made, and a few new features were added.
