  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 23:25

Communications :: Usenet News

About: The ausadmin project is designed to automate the maintenance of
USENET newsgroup hierarchies (such as aus.*) and provide end-users with
useful online information regarding all the newsgroups in the hierarchy
as well as proposals (Request For Discussion and Call For Votes). It
consists of a software package and a Web site package. The software
implements Perl classes which maintain data structures representing
existing newsgroups and proposals for new newsgroups, and the Web site is
mostly dynamically generated by Perl CGI and PHP code which reads the data
structures mentioned above. The Web site is intended to provide the user
with as much information as possible about the newsgroups which are under
management.

[006] - autonuts 3.0 (Development)
  by cider (http://freshmeat.net/users/cider/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 15:12

Internet Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: autonuts is a superior MP3 downloading aid written in Perl to
automate downloading of songs by a specific band or group. It spawns a
connection to Gnutella using mutella and IPC::Open2, connects and waits for
an appropriate network horizon, performs a search, waits for enough
results, processes the list to find uniques using Soundex, and runs through
the list of unique files to grab, queues them all, and then finally rests
for 20 minutes (you can change it if you like) and dies off after all the
requests have been shouted off.

Changes: Previously, the project was intented to automate gnut, but it has
since chosen the path of mutella and to abandon using expect.pm in favor of
IPC::Open2. This release has superior performance improvement over previous
versions, and fills up drives efficiently. It now requires only Perl and
mutella.

[009] - bash programmable completion 20020521
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 13:40

System :: Shells System :: Systems Administration Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all targets
in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable completion
routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the amount of
typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: unzip & zipinfo also complete on .war files (as used by Tomcat,
etc.). Mandrake bzme completion was added. The Debian package completion
functions have had all dependence on grep-dctrl removed, since this is not
a required package in Debian.

[016] - cinc 2.1.2
  by romeo (http://freshmeat.net/users/jrvela/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 00:15

About: cinc is an emulator for the Bell Lab's CARDIAC (Cardboard
Illustrative Aid to Computation) computer. A CARDIAC assembler (casm) is
included. The CARDIAC kit was published in 1969 to teach the internal
workings of a digital computer and machine code programming. cinc emulates
the CARDIAC computer and allows the user to run CARDIAC programs. The casm
program take CARDIAC assembler source code and translates it to CARDIAC
machine code that can be executed with cinc.

Changes: This version takes input from a source file given on the command
line rather than standard input. Fixed a bug in casm that did not detect
invalid negative numbers in EQU instructions, which could have led to bad
code generation. The compilation and installation process was modified so
that it can be used on different platforms, and the cinc command line
options were changed.

[023] - dnotify 0.5.0
  by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 06:36

System :: Monitoring

About: dnotify is a simple program that makes it possible to execute a
command every time the contents of a specific directory change in Linux. It
is run from the command line and takes two arguments: one or more
directories to monitor and a command to execute whenever a directory has
changed. Options control what events to trigger on: when a file was read in
the directory, when one was created/deleted, etc.

Changes: An important race condition was fixed. As a result of this, the
code could be much simplified. The README document was updated with
information about dnotify being broken in 2.4.18 and earlier. It is now
recommended that the fl_owner patch is used.

About: e3 is a full-screen, user-friendly text editor with an interface
similar to that of either WordStar, Emacs, Pico, Nedit, or vi. It's heavily
optimized for size and independent of libc or any other libraries, making
it useful for mini-Linux distributions and rescue disks. The assembler
version supports Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Win9x, QNX, Atheos, BeOS,
ELKS, and DOS. There is also a separately distributed version written in C
which supports some other Unix versions and CygWin. It is also possible to
use regular expressions by using child processes like sed. e3 has a built

[026] - editkit 1.00
  by Jean-Pierre Demailly (http://freshmeat.net/users/demailly/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 12:18

Text Editors

About: Editkit is a small and modular package, written in C, which extends
Terry Loveall's lightweight editX project. Emacs and Wordstar bindings are
currently available, and VT100 console or X frontends are provided. Since
the binaries are small and require just the basic termcap or X11 libraries,
it should be useful for small environments or rescue disks. It should also
be easy to embed Editkit as an auxiliary tool in other projects. Still, it
can be used as a lightweight clone of emacs with nearly identical basic
editing commands and some custom-keys scriptability.

Games/Entertainment Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Freeciv is a multiuser reimplementation for Unix/X of the famous
Microprose game of Civilization. By default, the game is an improved Civ
II, but this can be customized; modpacks for near-100% compatibility with
Civ I and Civ II are included. Multiuser gameplay is real-time: in each
turn, all human players move concurrently. The game is designed to remain
fairly playable even on poor network connections. Freeciv can also be
played on standalone machines, and its AI players are a good challenge for
beginners. The source code comes with the server, two X clients, and non-X
clients for MS Windows and Amiga. Freeciv is released under the GNU General
Public License. It is maintained by an international team of coders and
enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive network games
out there.

Changes: This release features automated workers and specialists, sound
support, a new default tile set, a new and improved city dialog, Windows
and GTK 2.0 versions of the client, and intelligent city names. Changes
have been made to research bulbs, trade routes, city walls when you have
the Great Wall, unit food cost under Communism, palaces, and firepower
changes for ships in cities, helicopters, and fighter units.

About: Keepalived for LVS aims to add a strong and robust keepalive
facility to the Linux Virtual Server project. This project is written in C
with multilayer TCP/IP stack checks. It implements a framework based on
three family checks: Layer3, Layer4, and Layer5. This framework gives the
daemon the ability of checking a LVS server pool states. When one of the
servers in the LVS server pool is down, keepalived informs the Linux kernel
via a setsockopt call to remove this server entry from the LVS topology. In
addition, it implements a VRRPv2 stack to handle director failover.

About: The Machine Inventory Database (MID) is a Perl-based CGI interface
to manage the machines on and off your network, both from the IP assignment
perspective and the asset-tracking perspective. On top of acting as a
frontend to a handful of MySQL tables, it handles IP assignment and acts as

chance for typos in the configuration files which tend to bring down
service.

Changes: Moving the definition of the cookie name out of the CGI and in to
the Makefile, fixing the acl.sql to actually have an encrypted password for
the "guest" user, updated user-level security, updated SUPPORT docs to
reference the new Web site, minimalized theme support to customize the

[068] - Moosic 1.2.7
  by daniel pearson (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpearson/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 13:53

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Moosic is a music player that focuses on easy playlist management.
It consists of a server process that maintains a queue of music files to
play and a client program which sends commands to the server. The server
continually runs through its playlist, popping items off the top of the
list and playing each with an external program. The client is a simple
command-line utility which allows you to perform powerful operations upon
the server's queue, including the addition of whole directory trees,
automatic shuffling, and item removal according to regular expressions. The
server comes configured to play MP3, Ogg, MIDI, MOD, and WAV files.

Changes: Exception handling in the client and the server was improved so
that fewer exceptions go uncaught. This drastically reduces the nastiness
that results from the "broken pipe" error that can be produced when piping
the output of "moosic list" to another program.

Desktop Environment :: GNUstep Internet

About: Netclasses is an easy to use interface for creating a server in
Objective C with GNUstep. While netclasses is not specifically designed for
any one protocol, this distribution comes with everything needed for
TCP/IP. Adding new protocols should not be difficult with the strictly
protocol-based objected-oriented design. Netclasses seamlessly integrates
into NSRunLoop which means it requires very little code outside of the
actual connection object. In other words, if you interface at all with
NSRunLoop, netclasses will require no added code besides setting up ports.
Netclasses supports multiple ports spawning multiple connection objects.
The TCP/IP system has support for initiating a connection. Also, everything
is event-based so speed is not an issue.

from all of the other versions, and it has been made more portable than any
of the others with the help of GNU Autoconf.

Changes: New log files are now created as temporary files and have their
permissions and ownerships updated before they are renamed into place
(inspired by a similar fix in FreeBSD's version). The verbose explanitory
and debug messages have been greatly improved. Handling of PID files is now
far more robust (inspired by fixes in OpenBSD's version). Child processes

  by Charles Menzes (http://freshmeat.net/users/menzes/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 09:40

System :: Networking Utilities

About: Pancho is a utility that allows Cisco Router and Switch
Administrators to make changes to a single node, or group of nodes, without
requiring the admin to log into the individual device. It also provides
configuration archiving functionality by allowing you to copy the device
configurations to a remote server manually or though an automated process.

Changes: A bug that caused Pancho to incorrectly log a successful copy
running-config startup-config was fixed. This bug was seen when --commit
was used without another action such as --download or --upload.

  by Duncan Blues (http://freshmeat.net/users/DuncanBlues/)
  Tuesday, May 21st 2002 09:04

Office/Business Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: PHP Trouble Ticket attempts to adress the need for a centralized
means of problem reporting and tracking in multi-user environments (medium
to large companies, development groups, etc.). It helps to direct problem
reports to the responsible administrator(s), keep track of the status of a
problem being worked on, and offers an up-to-date list of recent changes
applied. PHP Trouble Ticket aims to be widely configurable, easy to use
even for the not technically inclined and multi-language capable.

Changes: The program now offers to limit the scope of unprivileged users to
their own tickets. Users of level "Expert" may now be given permission to
add comments to any ticket in the system. Users can now be added directly
from the administration page by the superuser. The following languages were
added to the NLS support: French, Spanish, Italian, and Dutch. Many small
bugs and potential security holes have been fixed. The program now runs on
both PHP 4.0.6 and versions >4.1.0 without changing the default config of
PHP.
