[001] - ADODB 2.00
  by John Lim (http://freshmeat.net/users/jlim/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 06:51

Internet :: WWW/HTTP Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content Software
Development :: Libraries

About: ADODB is a set of advanced PHP database abtraction classes. It
supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Interbase/Firebird, Informix, Sybase SQL
Anywhere, Oracle, MS SQL 7, Sybase, DB2, FrontBase, Foxpro, Access, ADO,
and generic ODBC. A metatype system is built in, making it possible to
figure out that types such as CHAR, TEXT, and STRING are equivalent in
different databases. It also features an SQL to HTML popup menu and SQL to
HTML table support. It has code to support record paging and blob/clob
support.

Changes: In this version, emulated RecordCount() is now stable. There is
improved blob support, RowLock() now supported in most databases, and there
is support for PHP 4.2.0 ODBC API changes. The CommitTrans($ok) function
now allows the setting of the $ok parameter to false to rollback. There are
new OCI805, Informix72 and Postgres64 drivers, and new sysDate and
sysTimeStamp properties for portable date and timestamp creation. There are
also miscellaneous bugfixes.

[002] - AFPL Ghostscript 7.20 (Development)
  by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 14:31

Multimedia :: Graphics Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: Ghostscript is a processor for PostScript and PDF files. It can
rasterize these files to a wide variety of printers, devices for screen
preview, and image file formats. Since applications tend to prepare pages
for printing in a high-level format such as PostScript, most Unix users
with low-level bitmap printers, such as inkjets, use GhostScript as part of
the printing process. In addition, Ghostscript is capable of converting
PostScript files, functionality comparable to Adobe Acrobat Distiller, but
on the command line. In addition, Ghostscript is used for file import and
viewing by a great many other applications, including xv, ImageMagick,
gimp, and xdvi. Several GUI wrappers for viewing PostScript and PDF files
exist, including GSview, ghostview, gv, ggv, and kghostview. This is far
from a comprehensive list.

Changes: This release adds support for external font renderers. The -dSAFER
flag now tightens read access to arbitrary files, as well as write access.
An optional feature emulating the "%disk" devices found on some Adobe
printers has been added.

[006] - bash programmable completion 20020516
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 12:53

System :: Shells System :: Systems Administration Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all targets
in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable completion
routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the amount of
typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: A fix for a bug in CVS completion when completing on filenames
that contain regex metacharacters, a fix for a bug that caused a null
completion list in 'cvs diff' completion, fixes for cd completion failing
when $CDPATH pointed to directories containing spaces in their names, and a
fix for variable assignments being returned as bogus targets in make
completion.

[007] - BINS photo album 1.1.7
  by Jérôme SAUTRET (http://freshmeat.net/users/zubro/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 18:54

Internet :: WWW/HTTP Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management Multimedia ::
Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: BINS is a valid HTML 4 photo album generator with support for
internationalization, EXIF, and customizable charset encoding, including
UTF-8 (Unicode). Albums can contains other sub-albums. The appearance of
the album can be fully personalized by using template and configuration
parameters. The number and size of scaled pictures can be chosen in pixels
or percentage of the original image. Several description fields (date,
location, etc.) can be associated with the pictures, and you can add
additional description fields. A command line utility or a GTK+ GUI can be
used to set or edit description fields. BINS can use the EXIF data
structure found in some pictures to automatically fill some fields (most
notably, date and time) and to produce a page providing all information
available on the picture, as well as the DigiCam settings when the photo
was taken. All image meta-data are stored in XML files.

Changes: This release uses HTML::Template to manage HTML creation from
template files. Thus, the HTML code is totally separate from the Perl code.
The new 0.5 version of bins-edit-gui is also included. It supports i18n via
gettext (a French translation is provided).

About: cats2procmailrc is a filter to generate a .procmailrc file from a
much terser file consisting of single-line rules. These suffice to do the
most common mail filing, making maintenance of a procmailrc very easy for
someone with more than a few filing rules. Each rule basically names the
folder, an optional subject tag, and the pattern.

Changes: Adding an -L option to tag the X-Label header instead of the
Subject:. "<" file interpolation directive, manual page improvements, and
use of $MAILDOMAIN instead of $SYSTEMID for default mail domain suffix.

  by Brian Szymanski (http://freshmeat.net/users/bsdski/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 16:15

System :: Logging System :: Shells Utilities

About: Dehup launches the given command in such a way that the command can
be resumed (via rehup) if the session ends unexpectedly. Unlike nohup ,
however, the command may be interactive (read from stdin) without aborting
the command. Furthermore, dehup provides for job control across multiple
shells/sessions. A process may be sent to the background by pressing CTRL-Z
(this is interpreted explicitly by dehup , and thus does not invoke any
sort of shell-specific job control), and later resumed with rehup PID,
where PID is the process ID dehup output when the user pressed CTRL-Z and
the process separated from the controlling terminal. That is, dehup and
rehup are intended to offer all of the functionality of nohup (immunity to
hangups) and all of the functionality of job control without being shell-
or session- specific. Note that, while in the background, a command will
still run until it tries to read stdin, at which point it will block.

[026] - Firewall Builder 1.0.2
  by Vadim Kurland (http://freshmeat.net/users/vkurland/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 16:01

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Firewall Builder consists of a GUI and set of policy compilers for
various firewall platforms. It helps users maintain a database of objects
and allows policy editing using simple drag-and-drop operations. The GUI
and policy compilers are completely independent, and support for a new
firewall platform can be added to the GUI without any changes to the
program (only a new policy compiler is needed). This provides for a
consistent abstract model and the same GUI for different firewall
platforms. It currently supports iptables, ipfilter, and OpenBSD pf.

Changes: This version includes a new experimental policy compiler for
iptables (fwb_ipt). This compiler comes in the package called
fwbuilder-ipt, and is based on libfwbuilder API, just like compilers for
OpenBSD pf and ipfilter. The old policy compiler is now in freeze mode so
that the switch to the new one could happen as soon as possible.

[033] - Gringotts 0.5.0
  by Germano Rizzo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mano78/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 03:42

Desktop Environment :: Gnome Security Security :: Cryptography

About: Gringotts is a small utility that allows you to jot down sensitive
data (passwords, credit card numbers, PINs, etc.) in an easy-to-read,
easy-to-access, and most of all very secure form. Gringotts makes use of
the MCrypt and MHash libraries for encryption, and uses GTK+ 2 for the user
interface. It lets the user choose from among eight strong encryption
algorithms (RIJNDAEL-128, RIJNDAEL-256, SERPENT, TWOFISH, CAST-256, SAFER+,
LOKI97, 3DES), two hashing algorithms (SHA1, RIPEMD 160) and two
compression techniques (ZLib and BZip2) with four compression ratios.
Moreover, it allows the user to use any file as a password, as an
alternative to the usual plain-text file, improving security one step
further.

Changes: This version sees a consistent code cleanup, most noticeably, now
the encryption part is separated in a shared library. The French
translation and the documentation files have been updated, and a bug has
been solved where the behavior of the boolean dialogs (yes/no) was
switched.

Conversion

About: "Jpegpixi" is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a
command-line utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly
refered to as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a
digital camera with CCD defects. Jpegpixi is unique in that it tries to
preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as possible. Most graphics
programs decode JFIF images when they are loaded, and re-encode them when
they are saved, which results in an overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on
the other hand, does not decode and re-encode the image, but manipulates
the encoded image data, protecting the quality of the image as much as
possible.

Changes: The interpolation method can be specified on the commandline (3
methods are available), reasonable performance with low quality JFIF
images, and minor bugfixes.

[056] - Mobile IPv6 for Linux 0.9.3
  by Antti J Tuominen (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajtuomin/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 07:03

System :: Networking

About: Mobile IPv6 for Linux (MIPL) is an implementation of the IETF
mobile-ip working group draft Mobility Support in IPv6. Its goal is to
create a high quality implementation of Mobile IPv6 for inclusion in the
mainline Linux kernel tree. It provides support for nodes moving from one
subnet to another without breaking any existing connections. By using
Mobile IPv6, a node is always reachable from the same IPv6 address, even if
it is not in its home network. Mobility is transparent to all upper layers,
and requires no changes for applications.

Changes: This version adds support for reverse tunneling, and includes
bugfixes.

About: mserver is a collection of software to allow easy organization,
backup, and searching of your MP3 collection. The backend is written in
Perl, and the front end is written in PHP4. Song information is stored in a
MySQL database, so users can browse and search through large music
collections quickly and easily. No special client software is needed since
the songs are streamed over the Web.

Changes: The backend configuration has been merged into one file for easier
installation. The playlist interface has been changed to work better with
larger playlists. Code has been added to mark files to be taken offline.
There is a new script to clean up the mserver database and MP3 file tree by
deleting stale entries and empty directories.

Communications Communications :: Chat Internet

About: OPENdj is Internet radio station software that supports multiple,
geographically dispersed DJs, thus implementing public-access Internet
radio. OPENdj is not playlist software nor is it a streamer. Rather, it is
a a timeslot scheduling engine and a stream-access coordinator. Its
features include automatic archival of all broadcasts, searching of
archived broadcasts, and automatic rerun scheduling with a pluggable rerun
selection algorithm. The broadcasting software used by DJs to relay their
signal to OPENdj features listener monitoring and real-time, text-based
chatting with listeners.

Changes: This version adds a new subproject, opendj-libopendj. This project
aims to ease the development of native-code OPENdj clients by providing a C
library API to handle the client-side of the OPENdj protocols and other
common client tasks. Platform independence is facilitated by using the
Apache Portable Runtime (APR). The opendj-libopendj library will primarily
be a wrapper for communicating with the OPENdj server, driving a an MP3

  by Olivier L. Müller (http://freshmeat.net/users/swix/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 06:42

Communications :: Email

About: Qmail-Scanner, (also known as scan4virus) is an addon that enables a
Qmail Email server to scan all gatewayed Email for certain characteristics.
It is typically used for its anti-virus protection functions, in which case
it is used in conjunction with commercial virus scanners. but also enables
a site to react to Email (at a server/site level) that contains specific
strings in particular headers, or particular attachment filenames or types
(e.g. *.VBS attachments). It also can be used as an archiving tool for
auditing or backup purposes. Qmail-Scanner is integrated into the mail
server at a lower level than some other Unix-based virus scanners,
resulting in better performance. It is capable of scanning not only locally
sent/received Email, but also Email that crosses the server in a relay
capacity. It also has SpamAssassin support.

Changes: This release supports SpamAssassin 2, there are configure
improvements, NULL has been added to the list of chars to treat as hostile,
there is shrink compression support, the "Clear" message can now include
"scoring", there is sub-sender-cache.pl support, and documentation

[080] - Speex voice codec 0.1.0
  by Jean-Marc (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmvalin/)
  Thursday, May 16th 2002 18:27

Communications :: Internet Phone Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Speech

About: Speex is a patent-free compression format designed especially for
speech. It is specialized for voice communications at low bit-rates in the
8-32 kbps/channel range. Possible applications include Voice over IP (VoIP)
applications, Internet audio streaming at low bit-rate, and archiving of
speech data (e.g. voice mail).

Changes: Use of the Ogg bitstream (using libogg) which allows (limited)
bitstream error recovery, reduction of the narrowband bit-rate from 15.7
kbps to 15.1 kbps, and the wideband bit-rate from 31.3 kbps to 27.7 kbps
