[001] - apt4rpm 0.1.4 (Development)
  by Richard Bos (http://freshmeat.net/users/rjmbos/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 16:54

System :: Installation/Setup System :: Software Distribution

About: The superb Debian package installer APT has since some time become
available for RPM-based distributions. However, to install RPM packages
with apt, an apt repository is needed. apt4rpm creates the apt repository
from an RPM repository. The rpm repository can be located locally or
remotely. Once the apt repository has been created with apt4rpm, the apt
tools can be used to install RPMs.

Changes: A problem introduced by SuSE 8.0, as SuSE is now releasing patch
RPMs, has been fixed. These have different dependencies compared to the
"real" RPMs. If you're running SuSE 8.0 and mirroring SuSE's FTP download
server, this is a "must upgrade" release. Download and linking actions have
been separated. All downloading is done first, and after that the linking
is performed.

[003] - bash programmable completion 20020514
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 12:45

System :: Shells System :: Systems Administration Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all targets
in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable completion
routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the amount of
typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: A bug in case-sensitive handling of ssh config directives in ssh
and known hosts completion was fixed. cd completion was simplified, and a
bug in its unique stem completion was fixed.

[005] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.92 (Stable)
  by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 16:12

Communications :: Email Communications :: Email :: Filters Security

About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use a
MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

Changes: This release has support for Postfix Content Filtering, and can
plug into the Postfix mail system using the content_filter setting. Trend
Micro Virus Scanner support has been added, integrating the API from their
library. Man pages have been added.

[011] - dev/con php base 0.1.10 (Development)
  by Pixel (http://freshmeat.net/users/pixel/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 14:51

Database :: Front-Ends Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content Software
Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: dev/con php base is a library that contains useful authentication,
date, file, string, and network functions, an event driven application
server with safe link generation, and subsession support that allows you to
combine many modules seamlessly. SQL abstraction layers can generate simple
SQL queries and manipulate nodes in doubly-linked lists and tree
structures. A widget set frees you from writing HTML code, and can be mixed
with your own templates. All of these features are integrated into an
easy-to-use interface, with toolkits for automatic form generation, SQL
search, and more.

Changes: The application server's 'view' object has been renamed to
'event', and the names of event-related functions and variables have also
changed. 'View functions' are now called 'event handlers'. There's also a
new API for the use of database cursors with forms which is more simple and
separated from HTML generation (class admin_panel). tk_autoform can
generate pure text instead of form widgets.

[016] - frox 0.7.4
  by James Hollingshead (http://freshmeat.net/users/hollo/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 14:46

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Frox is a transparent FTP proxy that runs under Linux and *BSD. It
should also work on other UNIX OSes that use ipfilter. It supports caching
of FTP downloads, either by redirecting through a Squid proxy, or through
its own local cache. Downloads may also be transparently scanned for
viruses (through an external scanner). Additionally there is an interface
for writing scripts to add features or modify frox's behavior, and examples
are included to limit download file size and to transparently direct
connections to specific hosts to mirror servers. The proxy is written with
security in mind, and in the default setup runs as a non-root user in a
chroot jail.

Changes: A fix for a bug that was causing truncation of FTP uploads in

  by Guillaume Chazarain (http://freshmeat.net/users/booh/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 08:12

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: GLiv is an OpenGL image viewer. Image loading is done through
Gdk-pixbuf (standalone or bundled with GTK+-2), rendering is done via
OpenGL, and the graphical user interface uses GTK+ with the GtkGLArea
widget. If Gdk-pixbuf cannot load your image, it uses ImageMagick to
convert it to PNG. GLiv is very fast and smooth at rotating, zooming, and
panning if you have an OpenGL accelerated board.

Changes: GtkGLArea-2.0 is used with GTK+-2.0. There are now scrollbars, but
they are reliable only with GTK+-2.0. Some build fixes were made. Neither
gliv --version nor gliv --help will start the GUI. The Directories menu is
now a bit smarter. You can now zoom by dragging the mouse while holding
Shift. Initial drag and drop support was added.

About: GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific text editor, which was inspired by
both TeX and GNU Emacs. The editor allows you to write structured documents
via a "wysiwyg" and user friendly interface. The program implements high
quality typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts. It is also possible to use
TeXmacs as an interface to computer algebra systems. Finally, TeXmacs
supports the Guile/Scheme extension language, which makes it possible to
adapt the user interface to specific needs, and even to extend the editor.

Changes: A major reorganizations has been made to the style files. Generic
and exam styles were added, as well as amsart and jsc styles for
mathematical articles. Visual indications for the environments you are in
have been implemented, as well as overline and underline macros.
Improvements have been made to the mathematical cal, frak, and Bbb fonts,
and the LaTeX to TeXmacs converter.

[027] - Hyperactive Directory Administrator 0.2.0 (Development)
  by Bill Welliver (http://freshmeat.net/users/hww3/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 00:25

System :: Systems Administration Utilities

About: Hyperactive Directory Administrator (HAD Administrator) is a
graphical tool for administering Users, Groups, Hosts, and other objects in
an LDAP directory. It differs from other tools available such as GQ in that
it is not designed to be a general purpose directory editor and is only
intended for use in an LDAP environment (it doesn't do anything with NIS or
local files). It is roughly modelled after the Microsoft Active Directory
Users and Computers tool.

Changes: This release features a major code reorganization, a configuration
preferences file, a new list view, and the ability to add new users.

[028] - IDS-reaction 1.1
  by nlabadie (http://freshmeat.net/users/nlabadie/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 11:47

Internet :: Log Analysis System :: Monitoring

About: IDS-reaction is a Perl script that "reacts" to obvious attacks. It
allows the IDS to work in conjunction with some type of network device. For
example, when IDS-reaction sees an attack, it can call a script that will
log into the firewall/router and block the host from entering the network.

Changes: An option to ignore networks was added. A logging method to watch
output (system_logfile) was added. $logfile was renamed to $ids_logfile.
File::Tail should be a bit faster now.

[029] - ifGraph 0.4.3 (Development)
  by Ricardo Sartori (http://freshmeat.net/users/sartori/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 16:38

About: ifGraph is a set of Perl scripts created to help network
administrators to visualize network flow on a daily, weekly, monthly, and
yearly basis. The graphics are created with RRDTool, and it shows bytes
(in/out) and errors for each interface. It also shows the
current/average/max use and the respective link/interface usage in
percentages. The program also outputs HTML files to make the visualization
of the PNG images more friendly and easy.

Changes: The max directive allows for two bandwidth descriptors (the first
for data in, the other for data going out), allowing people with ADSL to
graph correct data. A bug in the find-if.pl script which was showing errors
when interface indexes were not sequential has been fixed. A bug in
makegraph.pl that was creating wrong byte graphics has been fixed. A new
hbeat option reflects the heartbeat of the rrd files, thus allowing
graphics that do not show unknown data as zero.

Software Development :: Libraries Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: Inter-Thread Communication (ITC) aims to make it exceedingly easy to
call functions in other threads. The lexer does all the work, so just run
the lexer on your headers, then call the stub functions. In addition, it
also provides a complete threading API, with the four threading primitives
and a high speed threadsafe FIFO class.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics
Conversion

About: "Jpegpixi" is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a
command-line utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly
refered to as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a
digital camera with CCD defects. Jpegpixi is unique in that it tries to
preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as possible. Most graphics
programs decode JFIF images when they are loaded, and re-encode them when
they are saved, which results in an overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on
the other hand, does not decode and re-encode the image, but manipulates
the encoded image data, protecting the quality of the image as much as
possible.

About: Mailchain is a modular email filter/scanner, it integrates into your
mail server software and processes each message as it passes through. Each
message passes through a "chain" of check modules that do things like scan
headers, body content, attachment filenames or pass the message through an
external virus scanner (not included). A number of actions can be taken on
messages depending on the outcome of results, including quarantine,
deletion and/or notification messages.

Changes: Some variables that the Perl taint system was flagging as insecure
(they are not insecure) have been cleaned up. These variables were causing

About: MailScanner is an Email virus scanner and spam tagger. It supports
sendmail and Exim MTAs, and the Sophos, McAfee, F-Prot, F-Secure,
CommandAV, InoculateIT, Inoculan 4.x, and Kaspersky anti-virus scanners. It
supports SpamAssassin for highly successful spam identification. It is
specifically designed to handle Denial Of Service attacks. It is very easy
to install, and requires no changes at all to your sendmail.cf file. It is
designed to be lightweight, and so won't grind your mail system to a halt
with its load.

Changes: Implemented per-user and per-domain control for what to do with
spam, and Subject: line modification for viruses (same as for spam).
SpamAssassin reports now include the names of successful tests. Improved
the handling of Return-Path: headers and multipart/alternative messages, as
well as logging and documentation. Sophos auto-update now works with the

  by Vincent Oostindie (http://freshmeat.net/users/voostind/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 23:17

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content Software Development :: Libraries

About: Eclipse is an object-oriented class library for PHP. The classes in
the library are very powerful, allowing programmers to execute queries on
databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MS-SQL and Sybase), read data from files,
process all kinds of lists to create nice looking reports, and much more.
The strength of the library lies in its extensibility and ease of use. It
is very easy to add new classes to cooperate with the classes that already
exist. The biggest difference between this library and other
object-oriented libraries for PHP is that this one was designed by the
book, using Design Patterns and Refactoring techniques, resulting in lean,
efficient, simple and powerful classes, instead of large, bloated, slow
ones.

Changes: A number of classes have been added, bringing the total number of
classes in the library to 31. Changes have been made to existing classes to
make them even more efficient and easier to use. Apart from support for
Sybase (MySQL, PostgreSQL and MS-SQL were already supported), additional
database support in the form of Transactions has been added.

About: TM4J is a topic map processing toolkit and a set of topic map
processing tools. Topic maps are an ISO standard for the interchange of
information structures which can be used to represent ontologies, business
data and processes, individual knowledge and opinions, and more. The goal
of the TM4J project is to develop high-quality, Open Source software for
the creation, manipulation, and exchange of topic maps.

Changes: Many new features were added, including an extensible indexing
system, an implementation of the tolog topic map query language,
overridable change notifications, and improved XTM 1.0 Annex F conformance.

[088] - tn5250 0.16.4
  by Phil Gregory (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_g/)
  Tuesday, May 14th 2002 14:57

Communications Terminals :: Telnet

About: tn5250 is a 5250 terminal emulator, used for connecting to IBM's
AS/400 (now known as eServer iSeries) midrange computers. tn5250 implements
TN5250E, which means it is capable of device name selection, and printer
sessions. The emulator supports color, 132 column mode, and most other
features found in 5250 terminals and Client Access' 5250 emulator. While
tn5250 is text-based application, a script is included to run it in an
xterm properly. If you don't know what an AS/400 is, this program will
probably not be of much use to you.

Changes: The latest version of tn5250 adds many things, of which the most
notable is the return of Win32 support. Also included are SSL client
certificate support, a filter to convert SCS streams to PDF, color
remapping, and the usual slew of bugfixes. The license has also been
changed to LGPL to allow distribution with certain other programs (most
notably OpenSSL).
