[001] - abcm2ps 2.9.6 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 06:24

Category: Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: A return status on exit, and measure repeat ('|/|') were added.
Bad horizontal spacing (in some cases) was fixed.

[006] - Astaro Security Linux 2.012 (Stable 2.x)
  by astaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/astaro/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 08:22

Category: System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Astaro Security Linux is a firewall solution. It does stateful
packet inspection filtering, content filtering, user authentication, virus
scanning, VPN with IPSec and PPTP, and much more. With its Web-based
management tool, WebAdmin, and the ability to pull updates via the
Internet, it is pretty easy to manage. It is based on a special hardened
Linux 2.4 distribution where most daemons are running in change-roots and
are protected by kernel capabilities.

Changes: Up2Date 2.012 adds MS Windows 98 PPTP support, GRE protocol
support, and LCD support (for appliances). It also improves initial NIC
support, and fixes the MiddleWare PPTP config file growth bug and the bug
regarding WebAdmin Swap and Mem report numbers.

  by Mark Spencer (http://freshmeat.net/users/markster/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 16:29

About: Asterisk is a PBX (Private Branch eXchange) and telephony toolkit.
It acts as middleware between the Internet and telephony channels (like
VoIP, VoFR, ISDN, modems, Internet Phone Jack, etc.) and applications (like
VoiceMail, directories, MP3 players, intercom, etc.). It has many advanced
features such as a codec translation API. The base distribution includes
several channel backends, as well as applications. However, the beauty of
Asterisk is its ability to be extended using its APIs and dynamic module
loader. End users can even write their own applications that run on the
system.

Changes: This release includes major IAX protocol enhancments, clear calls
through iaxtel, new applications, and more zaptel work.

[009] - beancounter 0.4.0
  by Dirk Eddelbuettel (http://freshmeat.net/users/eddelbuettel/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 01:53

Category: Office/Business :: Financial

About: beancounter enables stock market data analysis and performance
evaluation. It has two main modes. The first is data gathering - both
current data (e.g. closing prices, high, low, volume etc.), and historical
price data can be retrieved and stored in an SQL database via easy
command-line operations. The second mode is data analysis based on the
stored data. This comprises various performance reports as well as a
Value-at-Risk analysis. beancounter is implemented as a Perl module, and a
Perl command-line frontend to the module. It supports markets in North
America, Europe, and Asia.

Changes: MySQL support has been added. PostgreSQL and MySQL now work all
the way up from database creation. The "update" SQL query has been
rewritten, so that all known stocks are updated. The "update" command is
now idempotent. Expired or delisted stocks are now recognised: unparseable
dates, as well as dates that are "too old" are set to N/A, and are neither
scrubbed nor databased during the "update" command. The database backend
and name can be set as parameters, which facilitates multiple databases and
backends to be used in parallel.

date types also available.

Changes: This release contains a fix for fuction-name clash when compiling
on bleadperl, a "support" chapter that was to the documentation, and a
rewritten version of the "development focus" chapter.

[015] - cx_Oracle 2.3
  by Anthony Tuininga (http://freshmeat.net/users/atuining/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 14:31

Category: Software Development :: Libraries

About: cx_Oracle is a Python extension module that allows access to
Oracle, and conforms to the Python database API specifications. This
module is currently built against Oracle 8.1.6.

Changes: This release contains incremental performance enhancements
(dealing with reusing cursors and bind handles). It ensures that arrays of
integers with a single float in them are all treated as floats. The code
dealing with scale and precision for both defining a numeric variable and
for providing the cursor description has been fixed; this eliminates the
problem of an underflow error (OCI-22054) when retrieving data with
non-zero scale.

[017] - didentd 0.2
  by doobee (http://freshmeat.net/users/doobee/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 11:13

Categories: Internet, Security :: Cryptography

About: didentd is a modular RfC1423 (identd) server for FreeBSD and Linux,
written with security in mind. Normally didentd does not send a username,
and instead sends an encrypted audit token to the client. If a remote admin
has a complaint about something from your machine, then he can send this
audit token back to you. You can then pipe the token through
didentd-decrypt and find out which user made the connection.
didentd-decrypt outputs all the information from the audit token. This
provides you with the benefit of ident without revealing internal
information from your system.

Changes: This version contains full FreeBSD and Linux support.

About: GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific text editor, which was inspired by
both TeX and GNU Emacs. The editor allows you to write structured documents
via a "wysiwyg" and user friendly interface. The program implements high
quality typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts. It is also possible to use
TeXmacs as an interface to computer algebra systems. Finally, TeXmacs
supports the Guile/Scheme extension language, which makes it possible to
adapt the user interface to specific needs, and even to extend the editor.

Changes: The new version provides experimental support for mathematical
input in computer algebra sessions. We also reimplemented keyboard bindings
- the scope of a binding may now depend on an arbitrary user-defined
Guile/Scheme predicate.

[037] - keychain 1.6
  by Daniel Robbins (http://freshmeat.net/users/gentoo/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 14:20

Categories: Security, Utilities

About: keychain helps you to manage RSA and DSA keys in a convenient and
secure manner. It acts as a frontend to SSH-agent, but allows you to
easily have one long running SSH-agent process per system, rather than
the norm of one SSH-agent per login session. This dramatically reduces the
number of times you need to enter your passphrase - with keychain, you
only need to enter a passphrase once every time your local machine is
rebooted. keychain also makes it easy for remote cron jobs to securely
"hook in" to a long running SSH-agent process, allowing your scripts to
take advantage of RSA and DSA keys.

Changes: If you have multiple keys with identical passphrases, you now type
in the passphrase only once rather than multiple times. /usr/ucb was added
to the path for Solaris systems.

[043] - Moosic 1.1.1
  by daniel pearson (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpearson/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 11:16

Category: Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Moosic is a music player that focuses on easy playlist management.
It consists of a server process that maintains a queue of music files to
play and a client program which sends commands to the server. The server
continually runs through its playlist, popping items off the top of the
list and playing each with an external program. The client is a simple
command-line utility which allows you to perform powerful operations upon
the server's queue, including the addition of whole directory trees,
automatic shuffling, and item removal according to regular expressions. The
server comes configured to play MP3, Ogg, MIDI, MOD, and WAV files.

Changes: This release contains fixes for various bugs that were discovered
when running the program in more diverse environments. The -c option to
moosicd now specifies the server's configuration directory instead of the
configuration file. The server program now defaults to writing all its
output to a file instead of to standard output.

[044] - Mp3Kult 0.5
  by Hio (http://freshmeat.net/users/hio/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 14:30

Categories: Database, Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Mp3Kult is an application for KDE 2. It organizes your MP3
collection in a MySQL database. It can read MP3 Tag and song information
(length, bit rate sample rate etc.), make playlists, play songs with an
external player (xmms, gqmpeg), find a song in database (base and advanced
search), and make a copy of a playlist on your hard disk (to play the
playlist without inserting cdroms). Mp3Kult can recursivly scan directories
looking for MP3s and automatically mount, umount, and eject a CDROM
before/after a job.

Changes: This release adds French and German translations and a tree view
mode. The functions to play songs and add songs to a playlist have changed.
The column sorting is now saved. A function to rename the volumes and the
playlists has been added. The bug with some tags has been fixed, as well as

  Monday, October 15th 2001 18:28

Category: System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: NetCallback is a Java application permitting the export of TCP ports
behind a firewall to hosts outside the firewall. This may be useful in some
special cases, for example, centralized control of test (demo) networks, or
connection to applets running in browsers. NetCallback consists of a public
and a private server. The public server executes on a host outside the
firewall and is responsible for receiving port forwarding requests. The
private server is run on a host behind the firewall and is responsible for
contacting the public server and connecting the protected TCP service to
the public server clients. The connection between public and private
servers may optionally be encrypted using SSL.

Changes: Support for UDP tunneling (in addition to the existing TCP
tunneling) has been added. UDP datagrams are sent over the persistent
connection and may utilize encryption. The command line invocation has been

About: PIKT is a cross-platform, multi-functional toolkit for monitoring
systems, reporting and fixing problems, and managing system configurations.
It consists of an embedded scripting language with unique, labor-saving
features, a script and system config file preprocessor, a scheduler, an
installer, and other tools.

Changes: Per-slave authentication keys are now implemented. A new utility,
rkey, was for generating random authentication keys, and command path
overrides in PIKT.conf were introduced. The 'piktc -p' option for updating
authentication keys was added, as well as ARP (MAC/ethernet address)
piktmaster authentication. The configs_samples were revamped, increasing
modularity, maintainability, clarity, ease of use, comprehensiveness, and
accuracy.

[065] - SDL_sound 0.1.3
  by icculus (http://freshmeat.net/users/icculus/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 16:55

Categories: Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion, Multimedia ::
Sound/Audio :: Mixers, Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: SDL_sound is a library that handles the decoding of several popular
sound file formats such as .WAV and .MP3. Designed to make the task of
sound playback easier, SDL_sound accepts files or other input through an
abstraction layer and returns the decoded waveform. SDL_sound can decode a
whole sound file and hand back a single pointer to the waveform, or
SDL_sound can process sound data in programmer-specified blocks when
resource constraints are a concern. SDL_sound can also handle sample rate,
audio format, and channel conversion on-the-fly.

Changes: This release uses autoconf for a build system. The library is now
portable to Win32 and MacOS X in addition to more traditional Unix systems.
MP3 decoding is no longer broken. Support has been added for Shorten (.shn)
sound files and experimental MIDI decoding. There are other bugfixes and
enhancements.

Categories: Database, Software Development :: Code Generators, Software
Development :: Object Brokering

About: SPOPS (Simple Perl Object Persistence w/ Security) is a robust and
powerful Perl module that allows you to serialize objects. It is unique in
that it also allows you to apply security to these objects using a fairly
simple but powerful scheme of users and groups. It's also unique in that
for most objects, you will not need to write any code. All you need is a
fairly simple configuration file, and you can have a class for your object
ready to go, right out of thin air.

Changes: There are several bugfixes to SPOPS::LDAP and to the class factory
code generation modules. There is a first draft of the manual to complement
the per-module implementation documentation.

  Monday, October 15th 2001 02:13

About: Taglog is designed for anyone who spends most of their day sitting
at a computer, working on various projects. You can make notes about what
you do, as you go along, associating them with the projects you work on. At
the end of the week you can produce a report of how your time was spent,
broken down by project for booking purposes. You can view previous entries,
by date, or by project. You can enter the actions you intend to take,
associate them with a project, and mark them as active, or complete.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in the selector for File/Open. It is
possible to Complete or Abort the current action from the drop down menu
from the End menu button. Active actions are displayed in priority order.
There is the beginnings of support for message catalogues for

[076] - User-mode Linux 0.49-2.4.12 (Development)
  by Jeff Dike (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdike/)
  Monday, October 15th 2001 11:49

Category: System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: User-Mode Linux lets you run Linux inside Linux. It is a safe,
secure way of running Linux versions and Linux processes. Run buggy
software, experiment with new Linux kernels or distributions, and poke
around in the internals of Linux, all without risking your main Linux
setup. User-Mode Linux gives you a virtual machine that may have more
hardware and software virtual resources than your actual, physical
computer. You can assign your virtual machine only the hardware access you
want it to have. With properly limited access, nothing you do on the
virtual machine can change or damage your real computer or its software.

Changes: The kernel was updated to 2.4.12. Physical memory is now fully
protected from processes. A crash in the console code was fixed.
CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB is now configurable. uml_router has been renamed to
uml_switch, and can optionally act as a hub. Various other bugs were fixed.

[083] - xsbrowser 2.0 (stable)

Categories: Database, Database :: Front-Ends, Internet, Internet ::
WWW/HTTP, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers, Scientific/Engineering,
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps., Scientific/Engineering ::
Visualization, Text Editors

About: The xsbrowser creates a human-readable documentation of XML document
types represented as XML 1.0 DTDs or XML schemas (REC-xmlschema-20010502).
The user needn't understand the DTD or XML Schema syntax. The xsbrowser
exploits XML Schema. Although you can directly feed a DTD into the
xsbrowser, it is recommended to first translate the DTD using the dtd2xs
translator. The dtd2xs translator allows a more sophisticated mapping of
DTDs onto XML schemas. The only requirement is a Web browser that supports
Java applets, Javascript, and CSS1. The Web browser needn't support XML.

Changes: A simple XML editor has been added. The user interface has been
improved. Performance of xsbrowser (loading and dynamic optimization of hot
spots) has been improved. More comprehensive documentation of xsbrowser is
available. DTD comments are mapped onto the XML Schema documentation. The
documentation of XML markup/values is sorted in ascending order. Examples
have been added (DTD/XML schema).
