[001] - Bastille Linux 1.2.0.pre21 (Testing Releases)
  by Jay Beale (http://freshmeat.net/users/armitage/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 12:26

Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and educational
Security Hardening Program for Red Hat Linux 6.0-6.2 and Mandrake Linux
6.0, 6.1. Virtually every task it performs is optional, providing immense
flexibility. It educates the installing admin regarding the topic at hand
before asking any question. The interactive nature allows the program to be
more thorough when securing, while the educational component produces an
admin who is less likely to compromise the increased security.

Changes: Root logins via [gkx]dm are now disallowed via PAM (this was a
minor oversight). Double-quotes were changed to single-quotes in two
regexps in BootSecurity.pm and SecureInetd.pm. The requires-bug that was
stopping sendmail from getting called was fixed. The default
configurations were set to not use PAM filesize/process number limits. A
bug was fixed which allowed root login on console even when you requested
such to be denied. A quoting bug in /etc/profile PATH-setting was fixed.
All new questions have been added to Linux Mandrake's pre-written
configurations (a.k.a. "security levels").

[003] - Binary I/O Library 0.7 (Default)
  by mikpos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mikpos/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 20:41

libbinio uses its own protocol to store and retrieve binary data portably.
It uses an fprintf/fscanf interface, exporting eight functions: fputf,
vfputf, fgetf, vfgetf, fwputf, vfwputf, fwgetf, and vfwgetf. Rather than
using nebulous data types such as "16 bits", it uses standard C types and
uses printf/scanf-style argument lists (it even uses GNU argument checking
if available). It should be a drop-in replacement for printf/scanf and
still work perfectly well. It aims to be portable to every C89-conforming
implementation, but can use C99 and GNU extensions if available.

Changes: This release adds bugfixes to pattern-handling and wide-char
support, more and better checks with "make check", a heavily cleaned up
Makefile and autoconf script, and minor code clean-ups.

  by David Sugar (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidsugar/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 06:39

Common C++ is a highly portable C++ class library meant primarily for the
development of portable threaded applications. A separate source tree is
maintained for both pthread "POSIX" targets (Linux, xBSD, Solaris, etc),
and for Win32 targets. The goal is to provide a truly common C++ framework
for writing portable threaded applications that do not require a huge
amount of runtime overhead to support, and hence can make C++ and threads
suitable even for the development of trivial servers and applications.

Changes: Support added for basic URL stream functions where one can now
build Common C++ stream classes that fetche data encoded from a URL
resource, including support for HTTP 1.1 and proxy servers. C++ XML stream
parsing support added. Support added for use with STLport.

[013] - gladepyc 0.10 (Default)
  by Fabien COUTANT (http://freshmeat.net/users/fabiencoutant/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 13:00

gladepyc generates a Python module from a Glade XML GUI description which
builds the corresponding GTK+ interface by using the _gtk module of the
PyGTK binding. The building module which is output can be used to build as
many separate window/widget instances of the same class as you want at
run-time, because each window is translated into a UI building class. It
can also, on request, generate UI building code for just a subtree of the
UI description.

Changes: All remaining widgets are now handled. "Set widget names" and
"generate main" project options are honored, as well as "has focus", "has
default" (Widget) and "max length" (Entry) widget attributes. Global
accelerators (not those inside menus) are also honored. Get/Set methods are
now generated for more widgets: ColorSelection[Dialog],
FontSelection[Dialog], FileSelection, H/V-Scale, and Calendar. Other minor
things were also completed (see README for details).

[024] - Linux 2.2.19pre18 (2.2.19pre)
  by togusa (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeanphilippelehenaff/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 12:42

Linux is a clone of the Unix kernel, written from scratch by Linus Torvalds
with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims
towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance. It has all the
features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix kernel, including
true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared
copy-on-write executables, proper memory management, and TCP/IP networking.

Changes: Minor bugfixes and drivers updates. This is just a final

[025] - Make CD-ROM Recovery 0.4.8 (Default)
  by Gratien D'haese (http://freshmeat.net/users/gdha/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 19:05

mkCDrec (Make CDROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito) disaster
recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or more
CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored on
another disk, NFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or system
intrusion the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore the
complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning, which allows one
to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have to be
of the same size, as it calculates the partition layout itself). Currently,
ext2 and reiserfs filesystems are supported.

Changes: Lots of bugfixes, support for Compaq's hardware RAID,
functionality on SuSe 6.x, Debian 2.2.r2, RedHat 6.x/7.x, and Mandrake
7.x/8.0, a redesign of loadable module support, and "make test" for better
prerequisites testing.

recompile your custom-configured kernel automatically and send an upgrade
report to the system administrator.

Changes: This release adds a fix in the automatic kernel recompilation, and
recognition of both the Grub and LILO bootloaders. The drakupdatesetup
wizard has been modified to be more user friendly with more error checking.
The bug related to "Refusing to install" has been fixed.

[028] - mpatrol 1.4.3 (Default)
  by Graeme Roy (http://freshmeat.net/users/groy/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 19:56

mpatrol is a link library that attempts to diagnose run-time errors that
are caused by the wrong use of dynamically allocated memory, including
writing to free memory and memory leaks. Along with providing a
comprehensive and configurable log of all dynamic memory operations (such
as malloc(), operator new, etc.) that occurred during the lifetime of a
program, the mpatrol library performs extensive checking to detect any
misuse of dynamically allocated memory and has support for both memory
allocation profiling and tracing. A wide variety of library settings can
also be changed at run-time via an environment variable, thus removing the
need to recompile or relink in order to change the library's behaviour.

Changes: A new --call-graph option in the mprof command, new --gui and
--verbose options in the mptrace command (which also displays useful
statistics), a fix for a rare bug when displaying the leak table and call
graph with call sites which have no associated symbols, new chapters on
heap corruption, memory leaks, and porting to the mpatrol manual, and
moving the Tools and Utilities sections to the top level.

[029] - OpenSymphony Cache 1.1 (Default)
  by Mike Cannon-Brookes (http://freshmeat.net/users/mcannon/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 12:51

OSCache is a JSP tag library and listeners that cache JSP content. This
results in massive performance benefits on any servlet engine, as well as
providing graceful error tolerance (e.g., in the event of a DB failure,
cached content is served).

Changes: Major bug fixes were made. This software is no longer considered
experiemental. The reliance on Listeners to start the CacheAdministrator
was removed, which means it is now Servlet 2.2 compatible. Session caches
are now persisted to disk and removed when the session finishes. Caches can
now be flushed individually by key.

oSpam is an anti-spam system based on Perl and qmail. It features "one-day"
email addresses for usenet postings: after a delay, the mails sent to your
address will be put in quarantine waiting for a confirmation, or/and can be
used as your main email address: all your contacts are listed in a file. If
somebody which isn't in the list send you a mail, he will get a small and
unique confirmation request, and then the mail(s) will be delivered
transparently.

[033] - PHPend v1.0 (Default)
  by nathan (http://freshmeat.net/users/nathan0x00org/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 03:23

PHPend is a prepend.inc and append.inc manager. It will search the
directory tree below the current script to find them, much like
ColdFusion's Application.cfm. When one is found, it will be include ()'d.
If the script returns FALSE, the search will continue where it left off.
If the script returns TRUE (default), the search will stop. It basically
allows you to have customized prepend/append's on a per-directory basis
and if one is not found in the current directory, it will look below it
until it finds it.

[047] - SISC 1.0.3 (Default)
  by Scott G. Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/scgmille/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 13:13

SISC is an extensible Java-based interpreter of the algorithmic language
Scheme. It uses modern interpretation techniques and handily outperforms
all existing Java interpreters (often by more than an order of magnitude).
In addition, SISC is a complete implementation of the language. The entire
R5RS Scheme standard is supported, with no exceptions. This includes a full
number tower including complex number support and arbitrary precision
integers and floating point numbers, as well as full support for
first-class continuations (not just escaping continuations as in many other
interpreters).

Changes: number-string was inadvertantly unbound; this has now been fixed.
Some minor speed improvements and code cleanup were also made.

[049] - tnimage 3.2.6 (Default)
  by T.J. Nelson (http://freshmeat.net/users/tjnelson/)
  Sunday, March 25th 2001 12:48

tnimage is a scientific image viewing and analysis program. It performs
image registration, 2D gel analysis, wavelet transformation, 2D-FFT,
densitometry of rectangular, circular or arbitrary-shaped areas,
morphometry, grain counting, segmentation, image convolution and
deconvolution, measurement and calibration. There is a builtin spreadsheet
for pixel editing, and it includes numerous filters for zoom, mask, warp,
gradient flood fill, animation, Bezier curves, chromakey, transparency,
multiple fonts, subscripts, rotated text, arrows, sprayable math and
filtering, and graphically-editable colormaps. New features are easily
added with plugins. It features a scanner and camera interface, a
user-friendly interface based on Motif, and the ability to handle 512
images simultaneously in separate windows or in a single large window.

Changes: New features include image registration/affine transformation,
multiple crosshairs to indicate the corresponding point on all images, and
adaptive local contrast filter. Spot densitometry can now use a predefined
list of x,y points (such as list created by grain counting). Improvements
were made to simultaneous display of multiple animated images and to image
algebra.
