The Evolution of OS Design
by James Williams (mailto:virtex@bigfoot.com)
Section: Editorials
Thursday, March 22nd 2001 00:00

With each new generation of operating systems, we are introduced to new
ways of thinking about how our computers work. To simplify things for the
user, we must deploy a consistent interface in which they can do their
work. It is equally important to extend this consistency to programmers, so
they too can benefit. As an operating system ages, it gradually becomes
burdened with a plethora of interfaces which break the simplicity of its
original architecture. Unix originally followed the "everything is a file"
mantra, only to lose sight of that design with numerous task-specific APIs
for transferring files (FTP, HTTP, RCP, etc.), graphics (X11, svgalib),
printers (lp, lpr), etc. Plan 9, introduced in 1989, demonstrated how even
a GUI can be represented as a set of files, revitalizing the "everything is
a file" idea. The purpose of this paper is to describe a hypothetical
operating system called OOS which aims to push this paradigm even further.

[001] - ACP modem (Mwave) driver 20010315 (Stable)
  by Steve Fox (http://freshmeat.net/users/drfickle/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 16:55

This is a set of Linux drivers for the ACP modem (Mwave), a WinModem. It is
composed of a loadable kernel module and a user level application. Together
these components support direct attachment to public switched telephone
networks (PSTNs) and support selected world wide countries. This driver
provides support for the IBM ThinkPad 600E. The modem also supports the
standard communications port interface (ttySx) and is compatible with the
Hayes AT Command Set.

Changes: Updates to work as a misc. device in order to support the official
mwave device node /dev/modems/mwave (major 10, minor 219) in devfs, an
updated mwaved initialization script (with support for Debian, SuSE,
RedHat, and derivatives), and fixes for build issues on Debian.

[004] - aplus 4.18-4 (Default)
  by ber (http://freshmeat.net/users/ber/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 00:50

A+ is a powerful and efficient programming language. It embodies a rich set
of functions and operators, a modern GUI with many widgets and automatic
synchronization of widgets and variables, asynchronous execution of
functions associated with variables and events, dynamic loading of user
compiled subroutines, and many other features. Execution is by a rather
efficient interpreter.

Changes: There are some source code changes for FreeBSD. The distribution
now contains contributed code (in the contrib directory), and a couple of
test scripts are also included.

  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 13:46

Arka provides a nice GUI for the gp package of command-line utilities for
manipulation and display of DNA/RNA/protein sequences, and additional
graphical tools for various aspects of sequences analysis (e.g., GC plots
and 3D graphs).

Changes: Arka is suitable to serve as a GUI frontend for any command-line
driven program; it's just a matter of writing a spec file. A major bug
causing crashes was also fixed, along with several other minor bugs.

[006] - ASPSeek 1.0.5 (Default)
  by Kir Kolyshkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/k001/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 12:09

ASPSeek is an Internet search engine, written in C++ using the STL library.
It consists of an indexing robot, a search daemon, and a CGI search
frontend. It can index as many as a few million URLs and search for words
and phrases, use wildcards, and do a Boolean search. Search results can be
limited to time period given, site or Web space (set of sites) and sorted
by relevance (PageRanks are used) or date. ASPSeek is optimized for
multiple sites (threaded index, async DNS lookups, grouping results by
site, Web spaces), but can be used for searching one site as well. Other
features include stopwords and ispell support, a charset and language
guesser, HTML templates for search results, excerpts, and query words
highlighting.

Changes: Fixes were made for a tmlp= bug in s.cgi (introduced in 1.0.4), a
rare bug while searching with st= and spN= parameters, a bug when using
spN=off, a ranks calculation bug, a coredump when using ul= and HTML
section filters together, a compilation problem with
--enable-charset-guesser, and FreeBSD compilation problems. File names in
configs and program arguments can start with "./" or "../". Statistics
(output of index -S) were fixed, and a few non-critical memory leaks were
cured.

[007] - atool 0.2.0 (Default)
  by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 13:13

atool is a script for managing file archives of various types (tar,
tar+gzip, zip, etc). The main command is probably 'aunpack' which extracts
files from an archive. It overcomes the dreaded "multiple files in archive
root" problem by first extracting to a unique subdirectory, and then moving
back the files if possible. aunpack also prevents local files from being
overwritten by mistake. Other commands provided are apack (for creating
archives), als (for listing files in archives), and acat (for extracting
files to stdout).

Changes: Minor bugfixes were made for single compressed files.

[008] - Automated Password Generator 2.0.0a0 (Development)
  by Adel I. Mirzazhanov (http://freshmeat.net/users/adel17/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 01:51

Automated Password Generator is a set of tools for random password
generation including a standalone password generator, an RFC972 password
generation server, and a Perl client for the password generation server.
These feature a built-in X9.17 random number generator, and 27 modes of
password generation, including pronounceable password generation.

Changes: A new algorithm to check generated password quality has been
added, called the Bloom filter (activated with -b). A utility to manage the
Bloom filter called apgbfm has been added. There have been some code style
fixes, and APG_TIPS has been added to the documentation.

[010] - Autopilot 1.2 (Default)
  by Signal-X (http://freshmeat.net/users/signalx/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 06:26

AutoPilot monitors the DTR line of /dev/palm, waiting for it to go from LOW
to HIGH, which is used to activate a command automatically to make syncing
easier. It can be used to boot up your favourite Palm mail syncer, or just
play a sound file automatically when the Palm is dropped into the cradle.

Changes: Support for the PILOTPORT environment variable has been added for
compatibility with other pilot-based apps. There are new options to
activate the given command if the hotsync button is pressed (RTS line).

  by Andreas Schiffler (http://freshmeat.net/users/andreasschiffler/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 11:57

The CloneIt system was created to copy and essentially clone harddisks of
identical PCs through a network. This is a common task when installing
server racks or farms or when updating a computer-lab setup where one deals
with identical machines. The system software consists of a Linux boot
floppy and a ramdisk floppy with minimal system utilities that can perform
the task of copying the complete contents of disk devices through a
network.

Changes: Instructions and scripts on how to use CloneIt to backup harddisks
were added.

[017] - CVSSearch 2.0 Beta 1 (Development)
  by Amir Michail (http://freshmeat.net/users/amir/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 00:30

CVSSearch searches for code fragments using CVS comments. Specifically, it
takes advantage of the fact that a CVS comment describes the lines of code
involved in the commit and that this description will typically hold for
many future versions. In other words, CVSSearch allows you to better search
the most recent version of the code by looking at previous versions to
better understand the current version.

Changes: This version is a complete rewrite of CVSSearch, and should be
easily installable, but requires CGI. It can search multiple CVS
repositories and completely, and has a completely new GUI that makes CVS
comment to source code mapping more explicit. There is a demo on the web
page.

[018] - CyberCalendar 1.7b (Default)
  by Shawn Ewald (http://freshmeat.net/users/shawn1234/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 04:37

CyberCalendar is a calendar of events program for the Web and WAP/Handheld
devices written entirely in Perl. It features creation of an unlimited
number of calendars, ability to receive scheduled event reminders via
e-mail, sending events to friends as e-mail messages, and downloading
events in vCalendar format to your personal scheduling software or your
handheld device. It also supports multiple calendar administrators, is
fully configurable (including images and HTML colors), and runs as a CGI or
mod_perl application.

Changes: This release introduces the first basic implementation of support
for an Access Control List (ACL) -- this means multiple non-administrator
users can now have access to a single calendar as well as having different
permissions. There are many asthetic improvements to the calendar
interface. The HTML output has been cleaned up and extraneous HTML tags
have been removed. The documentation has been brought up to date.

  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 05:11

GDIS is a visualization program for small molecules, crystals, and solution
cells. It is in development, but is nonetheless fairly functional. It has
support for BIOSYM, XYZ, XTL, MARVIN, and GULP files, and assorted tools
for visualization, animation, and model creation. Rendering of molecules
and energy minimization are also possible via Povray and GULP.

Changes: GDIS has been given a slightly different look with models (and
associated properties) displayed using a GTK tree. Crystal unit cells and
space group information is now processed with SgInfo. Crystal habits can
also be displayed (via cdd). Prettier element data display is also
available (via gperiodic). Some sample data files to illustrate the above
are included in the tgz package (*.gin and *.xtl for space groups and *.gmf
for morphology).

  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 12:12

The Graffiti Server is a small C program that allows the posting of
messages and, optionally, HTML. It displays the most recent messages but
has a search function for finding entries with a given keyword or string.
Users can post and delete their own messages, while the administrator can
delete any message. As configured, the server remembers about 2500
messages. The Graffiti Server is a traditional Unix daemon that installs
itself on a port, waits for connections, then forks another copy to handle
the request.

[037] - Jakarta Velocity 1.0b1 (Beta)
  by Jon S. Stevens (http://freshmeat.net/users/jons/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 01:30

Velocity is a Java-based template engine. It permits web page designers to
use simple yet powerful template language to reference objects defined in
Java code. Web designers can work in parallel with Java programmers to
develop web sites according to the Model-View-Controller (MVC) model,
meaning that web page designers can focus solely on creating a site that
looks good, and programmers can focus solely on writing top-notch code.
Velocity separates Java code from the web pages, making the web site more
maintainable over the long run and providing a viable alternative to Java
Server Pages (JSPs) or PHP.

[068] - Rolodap 0.80 (Default)
  by wintermte (http://freshmeat.net/users/wintermte/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 18:24

Rolodap is a multiuser contacts managment system that uses an LDAP server
to store all user, group, and contact information. It was developed using
PHP, HTML, and Javascript so that it can be accessed from any OS with a
Javascript capable HTML browser. The Web-based interface provides an
easy-to-use front end to the contacts directory, which allows users to
search and organize their contacts into user-created Address Books. A
single contact can appear in any number of Address Books, yet each contact
only exists in the database one time. This means data for each contact only
needs to be updated one time in order to affect change in all user's
Address Books.

Changes: Code to speed up opening any of the search pages, and a new
feature that will create an HTML page that contains all of the contacts in
a book, formatted so that it can be saved locally and referenced when not
connected to the Internet.

Ruby is a language for quick and easy programming. Similar in scope to Perl
and Python, it has high-level data types, automatic memory management,
dynamic typing, a module system, exceptions, and a rich standard library.
What sets Ruby apart is a clean and consistent language design where
everything is an object. Other distinguishing features are CLU-style
iterators for loop abstraction, singleton classes/methods and lexical
closures.

decorations are configurable and all user-interface policy is controlled
through the language. Its aim is to manage windows in the most flexible and
attractive manner possible. As such it does not implement desktop
backgrounds, application docks, or other things that may be achieved

[075] - SnapSource 0.14 (Default)
  by Hans Dulimarta (http://freshmeat.net/users/dulimart/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 03:20

SnapSource is a utility written in Perl to automatically and periodically
take a snapshot (incremental backup) of your source code and display the
modifications in a 2-column (original and modified) format similar to that
of cervisia. Changes, additions, and deletions are displayed in different
colors, customizable per user preference. It is not another CVS, and it is
not a front-end to CVS, but it is supposed to be used in between CVS
commits.

Changes: Directories are manipulted using DirHandle to enable sorted output
of directory entries. 'Search by Date' output is now selectable. Clicking

[076] - sunclock 3.33 (Default)
  by Jean-Pierre Demailly (http://freshmeat.net/users/demailly/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 12:48

Sunclock is a sophisticated clock for the X Window system. It displays a
map of the Earth and shows which portion is illuminated by the sun. In
addition to providing local time for the default timezone, it also displays
GMT time, legal and solar time of major cities, their latitude and
longitude, sunrise and sunset, and the mutual distances of arbitrary
locations on Earth. Sunclock can display meridians, parallels, tropics, and
arctic circles. It has builtin functions that accelerate the speed of time
and show the evolution of seasons.

Changes: The zoom widget has been improved and fixed. Dutch and Italian
localizations have been updated. A new huge 11Mb Earthmap is available on
the FTP site, producing very precise maps with zoom factor as large as 20.

  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 02:15

SysOrb is a client/server package that can monitor servers remotely (such
as Web servers), or monitor devices on servers (such as disks, memory,
load, etc.). It will alert the administrators via e-mail or pager if a
server is entering a critical condition, and has its own database backend,
allowing for massive collection of system statistics.

Changes: The FreeBSD packages now install properly. FreeBSD 4.2 is
supported instead of 4.0, and 3.5 is supported instead of 3.4. A possible
crash on NT and Win2K has been fixed. Problems with the Linux 2.4.X series

EtText is a simple plain-text format which allows conversion to and from
HTML. It provides an easy-to-edit, easy-to-read and intuitive way to write
HTML, based on plain-text markup conventions. Like most simple text markup
formats (POD, setext, etc.), EtText markup handles the usual things:
insertion of paragraph tags, header recognition, and markup. However it
also adds a powerful link markup system, and tries to generate code which
conforms to XHTML.

[082] - unixODBC 2.0.5 (Default)
  by Nick Gorham (http://freshmeat.net/users/lurcher/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 12:29

The unixODBC project provides UNIX applications with the same ODBC 3.51 API
and facilities available under Windows. It provides a Driver Manager that
supports the full ODBC API and performs the ODBC 3 to ODBC 2 translations
with UNICODE to ANSI conversion. It also includes a set of graphical
utilities that allow users to specify connections to DBMSes to be used by
applications, a collection of ODBC drivers including a simple text based
driver, an NNTP driver, a Postgres driver and others, and a selection of
templates and libraries that to aid in the construction of ODBC drivers. It
works with MySQL, Postgres, StarOffice, Applixware, iHTML, PHP, Perl
DBD::ODBC, Paradox 9, and many other applications and drivers. Connection
pooling is also provided to increase performance with applications such as
PHP.

Changes: Extra autoconf checks for -pthread and -mt compiler options were
added. A Postgres7.1 tree was added for code from new Postgres
development. Retrieval of errors was fixed for SQLTables and SQLColumns
call in isql. A memory leak in DM was fixed. The check for whether

[083] - WebMake 1.1 (Default)
  by Justin Mason (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmason/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 12:46

WebMake is a simple Web site management system, allowing an entire site to
be created from an optional set of text and markup files and one WebMake
file. It requires no dynamic scripting capabilities on the server, and can
be run entirely offline. It allows the separation of responsibilities
between content editors, page designers, and the site architect. Only the
site architect needs to edit the WebMake file itself, or know Perl or
WebMake code. Perl scripts can be embedded and executed to build pages.
Automatic dependency tracking means that pages will not be rebuilt unless
necessary. Metadata support means that indexes etc. can be built
automatically.

Changes: Tag-definition support was added, similar to JSP's taglibs or
Roxen user-defined tags. A guide for first-time WebMake users was added.

[087] - xclip 0.02 (Default)
  by Kim Saunders (http://freshmeat.net/users/snaund/)
  Wednesday, March 21st 2001 00:57

xclip is a simple command-line utility which reads input from stdin and
puts it into the X selection of an X server, allowing you to paste this
data into any X application. xclip allows better intergration between
command line software and GUI programs. It's very convenient if you need to
copy and paste the (possibly voluminous) output of a command, or the
contents of a file. It saves you the trouble of selecting the text with
your mouse, which can be slightly tricky if the target text is very long.

Changes: The ability to read input from files as well as stdin has been
added, and it can now fork into the background while waiting for selection
requests.
