[003] - ALSA driver 0.9.0beta3 (Development)
  by Jaroslav Kysela (http://freshmeat.net/users/perex/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 14:52

The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture is composed of several parts. The
first is a fully modularized sound driver which supports module
autoloading, devfs, isapnp autoconfiguration, and gives complete access to
analog audio, digital audio, control, mixer, synthesizer, DSP, MIDI, and
timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured
kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free
applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the
ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins,
PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration
program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.

Changes: Updates in this version include: alsa-lib enhancements (pcm_meter)
and fixes in the PCM API, Trident driver fixes, YMFPCI driver fixes, AC'97
codec fixes, OSS mixer emulation fixes (mono), VIA8233 driver fixes,
updates asoundrc structure, OSS PCM emulation fixes (oops), MPU401 code
fixes, and Intel8x0 code fixes.

[004] - Alt+Connect 2.5.3 (development)
  by peter miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/petermiller/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 19:05

Alt+Connect manages dialup connections, allowing a group of networked
machines to share a single Internet connection through their server. Custom
client software lets users to start or stop their internet connection, and
the server (connectd) ensures that the connection remains up only while
someone's using it. Features include support for multiple ISPs and links
(modems or ISDN channels), connection control lists, ability to record the
time a user spends online and charge him for it, and the ability to enable
and disable IP forwarding as a machine starts or stops using the Internet.

Changes: Billing quotas, external authentication, 'connect exec ...' runs a
command inside a net session, connect can cut more than two columns from a
table, and the ability to add your own fields for providers and users.

[005] - atsar 1.6 (Default)
  by Gerlof Langeveld (http://freshmeat.net/users/gela/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 04:33

The atsar command can be used to detect performance bottlenecks on Linux
systems. It is similar to the sar command on other UNIX platforms. Atsar
has the ability to show what is happening on the system at a given moment
(by supplying an interval as command-line argument). However, it also keeps
track of the past system load by maintaining history files from which
information can be extracted. Statistics about the utilization of CPUs,
disks and disk partitions, memory and swap, tty's, TCP/IP (v4/v6), NFS, and
FTP/HTTP traffic are gathered.

Changes: Kernel 2.4, IPv6, tty and NFS-server counter support has been
added. Parsing of per-partition counters has been modified, and HTTP and
FTP counters have been improved.

  by Tassilo v. Parseval (http://freshmeat.net/users/ParkerPine/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 19:59

Initially intended as a Napster/OpenNap 'robot', AutoNap can be used like
any other console napster client with support for user-specified servers.
In the future, AutoNap will feature a non-interactive mode.

Changes: Stability improvements, caching of the last 10 search results, new
manpages, and an install.sh script which will set up AutoNap or remove it
for you.

  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 01:01

dia2sql is a Perl script that reads an uncompressed XML file from Dia and
generates SQL input files for RDBMS software like MySQL or PostgreSQL. The
Dia file must contain an UML diagram that represents tables and table
columns. Protected UML class attributes will be interpreted as primary
keys, and you also can specify a default value for each column.

Changes: This program now supports CREATE INDEX statements for PostgreSQL
using the visibility flag set to "Private". It also includes a small
workaround for Dia v0.83.

[016] - DynDns Service 0.3.2 (Default)
  by Michael Kummer (http://freshmeat.net/users/fr0st/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 14:57

DynDns Service is for people who want to provide a dynamic DNS service like
DHS.org or yi.org. The server listens for update requests, updates the zone
file, and then sends a HUP signal to named. The update is protected by a
user database and passwords. Note: This package is not related to the
software running dyndns.org.

Changes: Fixed segfault when config file or zonefile were missing.
Replaced all printf calls with fprintf calls.

[018] - Entity 0.7.2 (Default)
  by Ian Main (http://freshmeat.net/users/imain/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 15:06

Entity is an open source application framework built around XML. Entity is
actually an engine that allows you to create object oriented, event driven
applications with XML trees. This design allows you to create tags in XML
which can be used to represent any object. We have used this engine to
create a set of tags for the GTK+ toolkit (among other things), allowing
you to create graphical applications using XML, and an embedded scripting
language. Scripting languages supported include Perl, Python, Tcl,
Javascript, and C (compiled and loaded at startup). We've kept the
implementation lean and fast to make it usable for real life applications.

Changes: Fixed many bugs resulting in a very stable release. Added
Javascript interpreter support. Added OpenSSL support for sockets (for use
by applications). Added OpenGL support. Added SDL support.

of an relational database system (MySQL). It provides structured retrieval
of arbitrary XML documents with support for fulltext search. All documents
in the repository may be queried at the same time, regardless of the DTD or
schema they use. Documents are stored in a native form which allows fast,
index-based retrieval. No mapping or schema editing is required.

[026] - GNU TeXmacs 0.3.2-9 (Default)
by Joris van der Hoeven (TeXmacs program)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 06:31

GNU TeXmacs is a free WYSIWYG scientific text editor which was inspired by
both TeX and GNU Emacs. It is also possible to use TeXmacs as an interface
to computer algebra systems. The program implements high-quality
typesetting using TeX fonts, but it is also provides a user-friendly
interface. Finally, TeXmacs supports the Guile/Scheme extension language,
which makes it possible to adapt the user interface to specific needs and
even to extend the editor.

Changes: The new version mainly implements a new way of converting between
logical and physical cursor positions. Other new features include better
prevention of flickering while typing, Polish language support, different
Russian input methods, an improved sloppy hyphenation algorithm, and a 10
percent speed optimization.

[030] - HTML Document Object 1.08 (WebSite Code)
  by James A. Pattie (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcxuser/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 15:12

The HTMLObject is a set of Perl modules which provide the ability to create
Dynamic HTML documents (Framesets, DHTML, etc.). You can generate your code
without having to do cookies first, then JavaScript, then the body. As long
as the content is output in the correct order, you can generate JavaScript
or cookies at any point since the output is not sent to the server until
you call the display() method. It attempts to fully support HTML 4.x.
Helper methods are provided to do cookies, URI encoding, etc.

Changes: A fix for the HTMLObject Version being displayed on each page (the
wrong variable was being used), and an install note for people going from
tarball to RPM usage.

mp3mover.pl is a Perl script which attempts to rename MP3 files so that
they conform to a consistent user-defined naming scheme. It inspects every
MP3 in a directory and attempts to work out which part of the MP3 is the
artist's name/album name etc. It will then rename each mp3 to follow the
user specified naming scheme. mp3mover.pl was designed to be very flexible

[050] - Net::Server 0.55 (Devel)
  by Paul T Seamons (http://freshmeat.net/users/rhandom/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 06:34

Net::Server is an extensible class-oriented Internet server written in
Perl. The base Net::Server class contains the bulk of the functionality but
can easily be extended with subclasses, process hooks, or overridden
methods. The subclasses included with the distribution include single
process, forking server, pre-forking server, and inetd server. All
subclasses (except for inetd) allow for binding to and accepting on
multiple ports. It has the ability to read a conf file, take command line
arguments, chroot to a different directory, become another user, become
another group, maintain a pid file, and specify log file. Subclasses
contain extended functionality such as min_servers, max_servers, and
spare_servers. Written to be light but powerful, Net::Server is intended to
be the back end layer of FTP, SMTP, HTTP, ad serving, POP3, and other
services, with protocol-specific functions layered on top.

Changes: The pid file can now be overwritten by another user.
Signal handling has been unified by the removal of redundant code. Forked
servers can shut down their sockets immediately after clients accept,
allowing the parent process to HUP more easily. Makes sure the parent
process is still running in the PreFork Server. Command line parameters are
saved in preparation for a HUP.

[052] - Nmap 2.54BETA22 (Development)
  by EndelWar (http://freshmeat.net/users/endelwar/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 14:53

Nmap is a utility for network exploration or security auditing. It supports
ping scanning (determine which hosts are up), many port scanning techniques
(determine what services the hosts are offering), and TCP/IP fingerprinting
(remote host operating system identification). Nmap also offers flexible
target and port specification, decoy scanning, determination of TCP
sequence predictability characteristics, sunRPC scanning, reverse-identd
scanning, and more. Console and X-Window versions are available.

Changes: Eliminated usage of u_int32_t (was causing compilation errors on
some Sun and HP boxes). Defined integer-width typedefs such as
u32/s32/u16/etc. in Nbase. Went through much of the Nmap code and

[055] - oftpd 0.3.0 (Development)
  by shane (http://freshmeat.net/users/shanekerr/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 19:21

oftpd is designed to be as secure as an anonymous FTP server can possibly
be. It runs as non-root for most of the time, and uses the Unix chroot()
command to hide most of the systems directories from external users--they
cannot change into them even if the server is totally compromised. It also
contains its own directory-change and directory-listing code (most FTP
servers execute the system "ls" command to list files).

for IPv4 clients behind a firewall), random port selection to prevent
hijacking, and several bugfixes.

[058] - PCX Firewall 1.5 (Stable)
  by James A. Pattie (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcxuser/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 01:14

PCX Firewall is an IPTables firewalling solution that uses Perl to generate
static shell scripts based upon the user's configuration settings. This
allows the firewall to startup quickly, as it does not have to parse config
files every time it starts.

Changes: Hard coded blocking of NetBios and BootP traffic was removed, and
rules were added to blocked_ports/ignored which now handle these protocols.
You can now specify the source, dest, etc. for what to block without having
it logged. The blocked_ports/ignored file is the only new addition, and it
allows you to specify incoming traffic to drop but not log. The returning
Web traffic is now handled via an allowed_ports/incoming rule instead of in
the DROPnLOG chain.

PPTS is a project started at Whetstone Logic, Inc. to track all employees
of the company at any given time. It is a great tool for companies that
have telecommuting workers, or companies that have workers at different
sites, like a university campus. It allows the employee to log him/herself
off the office, with a message, and logged time. It also comes with
administraion tools to add/modify/delete employees.

Changes: A report now only shows projects with worked hours under it.

[060] - Perl webmail 2.2.13 (Default)
  by Jason Woodward (http://freshmeat.net/users/jaos/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 13:59

Perl webmail is a CGI script that interfaces with a POP mail server that
you provide. It can check mail, read messages, reply, forward, delete, send
and receive attachments, and it doesn't have to be a local mail server.
This script talks strictly POP3 for receiving and SMTP for sending mail.

Changes: The Italian lang pack was updated. A code rewrite has begun. All
the functions now accept and pass references where needed for speed and
modularity. The problem with using encryption without cookies was
identified and fixed. There is now only one pop connection, and a
reference is passed to each function that needs the connection. All the
variables in the config files were upper-cased for easy identification.
This will require all configuration files to be upgraded. A 'devel'
directory housing all the functions for later merging was added.

  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 05:56

The Python XML package contains parsers, SAX and DOM interfaces, sample
programs, and documentation. It is currently in beta.

Changes: Setup supports --with-libexpat and --ldflags to specify an
alternate Expat installation. xml.utils.boolean distinguishes between
boolean and integral values. The scripts xmlproc_parse and xmlproc_val
allow commandl-line interaction with xmlproc. WDDX marshalling now supports
"strict" and "loose" modes of operation. DocumentationFragment support has
been added, and correctly sets the ownerDocument property. A SAX exception
now retrieves line number information when it is created, rather than when
it is printed. Invoking sax2lib.ValidatingReaderFactor.make_parser creates
a reader object that is already set to validation mode. A number of
callback errors in the SAX2 xmlproc driver have been corrected.

  by François Dagorn (http://freshmeat.net/users/dagorn/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 05:35

RearSite is a Web publishing tool that allows the management of files from
a WWW interface. It was written to give users the ability to update their
personal home pages without using any commercial product or FTP. Using
RearSite is quite simple. After login, the user has access to his home
directory and is able to delete, rename, and create documents. RearSite is
able to upload WWW directories previously created (using any editor). It's
very easy to transfer and install archives (ZIP, tar, or tar.gz). Users are
able to set up HTTP access rights to their directories and also to share
their directories with trusted users. Users may also create per directories
forums and chats for groupware or distance learning purposes.

Changes: RearSite will trust cookies from the Sympa distribution-list
manager. Any user logged in through Sympa will automatically be recognised

[076] - Saint Jude 0.11 (Default)
  by Tim Lawless (http://freshmeat.net/users/timlawless/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 00:43

Saint Jude LKM is a Linux kernel module that implements the Saint Jude
model for improper privilege transitions. This will permit the discovery of
local, and ultimately, remote root exploits during the exploit itself. Once
discovered, Saint Jude will terminate the execution, preventing the root
exploit from occuring. This is done without checking for attack signatures
of known exploits, and thus should work for both known and unknown
exploits.

Changes: An improper IFDEF test in StJude_lkm.h would prevent compiles on
2.4.0 kernel. Fixed. StJude_Learning_Parser.pl would produce an output in
some instances that could not be compiled. Non-SMP compiles under an SMP
kernel has been fixed. If a process exec'd() without forking, and it was
an override rule, then the first execution wouldn't be recorded through

[078] - SAP::Rfc 0.91 (Default)
  by Piers (http://freshmeat.net/users/pxharding/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 13:49

This package is intended to facilitate RFC calls to an SAP R/3 system of
release 3.1x and above. It may work for earlier versions but it hasn't been
tested. The fundamental purpose of the production of this package, is to
provide a clean object oriented interface to RFC calls from within perl.
This will hopefully have a number of effects: (1) make it really easy to do
RFC calls to SAP from perl in an object oriented fashion (Doh!) (2) promote
perl as the interface/scripting/glue language of choice for interaction
with SAP R/3. (3) make the combination of Linux, Apache, and perl the
killer app for internet connectivity with SAP. (4) Establish a small fun
open source project that people are more than welcome to contribute to, if
they so wish.

Changes: SAP::Rfc has been completely rewritten to take advantage of
Inline.pm. This is a major release with a much-improved underlying C
foundation that is thread safe.

[080] - Securepoint Firewall Server SB 1.165 (Default)
  by Lutz Hausmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/lutzhausmann/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 06:54

The Securepoint Firewall Server is a high-performance, commercial-grade
application designed to offer full protection for network assets. The
Securepoint is a complete software system with an operation system, based
on a secure Linux. You can use the firewall on a standard PC with two or
three network cards, and is easy to install and administer.

Changes: VIA-RHINE, D-link DFE 530-TX, and new revisions of the 3c905C
network interface drivers have been updated. Passive FTP no longer enabled
by default, the ftp-data-pasv service must be enabled to use passive FTP,
however this will cause ports 1024 to 65535 to be open. An error with ICMP
ping requests from outside to inside the firewall has been corrected.
Configuration has been imporved with the config.fw program, which has added
backup and restoration of a configuration, the insertion of patches, and
the ability to mail the configuration to Securepoint's support.

[081] - Sentinel 1.2.1c (Default)
  by zurk (http://freshmeat.net/users/zurk/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 01:40

Sentinel is a fast file scanner similar to Tripwire or Viper with built in
authentication using the RIPEMD 160 bit MAC hashing function. It uses a
single database similar to Tripwire, maintains file integrity using the
RIPEMD algorithm and also produces secure, signed logfiles. Its main design
goal is to detect intruders modifying files. It also prevents intruders
with root/superuser permissions from tampering with its log files and
database. Disclaimer: this is not a security toolkit. It is a single
purpose file/drive scanning program. Available versions are for linux
(tested on all current Slackware and RedHat releases), with Irix versions
soon to be added on.

Changes: A -fullcheck option has been added which allows you to check for
files added to the drive even if they are not in the database. In addition,
autoinit and autorebuild have been added to the help, and the building
stuff has been improved slightly. The efficiency and speed of the
algorithms for checking and database creation have also been improved.
These improvements allow it to work at or near a hard disk's max throughput

Thokbook is a personal library system written in Perl. It is intended for
medium-to-large individual collections (several thousand books). Using
thokbook, you can add books via ISBN or EAN (usually via a barcode scanner
of some kind), get MARC records from libraries (so you don't have to type
in the information for the vast majority of your books), and create Web
pages so you can list all your books or search them. You can also check
books in and out and record who checked them out.

Changes: Ports to MySQL and DBD::CSV (a flat file pseudo-database). Note:
the database format has changed. If you created a database under version
0.01, you will have to destroy and re-create it.

[091] - UESQLC 0.8.9 (Default)
  by Rafa (http://freshmeat.net/users/ralcan/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 11:41

Universal Embedded SQL Compiler (UESQLC) is a compiler that provides a
common way for accessing heterogeneous databases. UESQLC is based on
Structured Query Language (SQL) as a standard for accessing data. This
interface provides maximum interoperability, i.e. a single application can
access different SQL Database Management Systems (DBMS) through a common
set of embedded SQL code (UESQL). This enables a developer to build and
distribute a client/server application without targeting a specific DBMS.

Changes: STL-like iterators for SQL queries, the compiler can read from
standard input, ability to use embedded variables in cursor names with
extended syntax, and many bugfixes.

[092] - Virtual FTPD 6.5.4 (Default)
  by msaarna (http://freshmeat.net/users/msaarna/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 14:00

Based on the Linux port of the OpenBSD daemon, VFTPD allows you to give
secure FTP access to people without creating real system users for them. It
also features various security enhancements designed to stop anyone from
leveraging more access to the system, even if they have somehow gained
control of the FTP daemon and its configuration files.

Changes: A replydirname() patch from the OpenBSD team was added.

[096] - wmmclient 0.1.0 (development)
  by Heiko Lippmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpl/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 03:30

wmmclient is a small Window Maker dock applet that connects to a specified
MasqDialer server and prints out status information of the current dialup
connection, if there is one. Its appearance is similar to the wmppp applet.
Two buttons allow you to connect/disconnect to/from the specified mserver.
LEDs tell you if you are connected to the mserver and if there's an active
dialup connection. If supported by the mserver, the applet will print out
some load information.

[097] - Worker 2.2.0 (Default)
  by BOOMERANG (http://freshmeat.net/users/boomerang/)
  Tuesday, March 20th 2001 19:43

Worker is a file-manager exclusive for X based on the famous filemanager
"DirectoryOpus" on the AmigaOS. It is configurable on the fly without
restarting Worker. Any extern program can be easily integrated in the GUI,
including a button and a hotkey. Worker uses real file-recognition on
file-content AND/OR file-ending, where each file-type can get an own
action.

Changes: Portmode change with the action updates the lvb, a fix for a
problem with giving a startdir relative to the current dir, removal of
worker_inst, a configurable clockbar, he correct background color is taken
for the "show image mode", ignoring dirs for filetype-checking, improved
configuration, and an updated French catalog.

YAPPA (Yet Another PHP Photo Album) is an easy-to-use online photo gallery.
It creates any needed thumbnails for the user on the fly, and adding
pictures to your existing gallery is as easy as FTPing to the album
directory.

Changes: Corrected a bug that affected the next/previous buttons when
viewing an image. You can now specify the albums root physical path and the
URI. Spaces and '&' in your image names are now supported. Implemented
thumbnails per page option, added album title/description, and added a
simple album/image hits counter.
