   It appears that the Mac source in the current distribution is
   munged.  I've put a good copy on our ftp server at...

     ftp://ftp.microimages.com/pub/outgoing/user/dwilliss/mac.hqx

   I don't know what this mac.info file is he talks about.

Your file is identical to the file in the freetype CVS.

Maybe the guy hasn't handled the archive correctly?  I've no idea
about Mac archives...
