Just a couple of comments:

Could we please allow generalized backend?

I am not sure what you are intending to use a full blow relational DB 
backend for, but do not make it MySQL only.

I think many of us here would agree there are better Open Source DB's 
around than just MySQL to choose from depending on the job.
