gv 3.5.8_1 is unable to show PDFs w/ ghostscript-afpl (gs) 8.0.0 when
(gs is) compiled w/ all the default options. instead message below

gv, however, did not have problems displaying PDFs w/ custom compied
gs-afpl version 7.04_7. yes it would be swell if i could have saved
the custom settings to compare but the port doesn't help in this
regard.

install ghostscript-afpl w/ default options; instsll gv. then try to
open various PDF files w/ gv.
