If there is no error... are you executing a window manager or a terminal in 
.xinitrc or equiv?  Maybe X finishes because it has nothing else to do, I 
have had that b4 on a fresh install.  

I have no experience with the nforce chipset, but believe it is supposed to be 
working in the latest version.  I am another MX400 owner.
