I could be mistaken, but a quick look at
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/initrd.txt 'splains it a bit better than
I...

It would seem that initrd.gz adds the capibility to load a RAM disk by
the boot loader, allowing a two-level boot process...

initrd.gz MAY have loaded a small kernel that included your SCSI module
drivers...
