No. The disk cage does not have the electronic bypass used in the dummy
modules to keep the loop closed. Either let the damaged disk in the slot or
get a dummy module.

So, basically, if I pull the disk out of the enclosure box and
replace the box into the empty slot. I will have a "dummy disk"?

Or does a real disk drive have to be attached?

(I have two 18GB Ultrastar disks available)

Thanks!

Yes, but you got 'Open loop error" messages in errpt.

When an ssa loop is open, the ssa performance will be degradate
probably to half speed. In ssa drawer the empty slots are contain
so called 'dummy disk'. The 'dummy disk' actually is a black plastic box
with a very simple electrical short-circuit. The dummy module main
responsivity is closing the open loop.
Only pull out the wrong disk from drawer and push back the dummy disk.

If your ssa drawer originally ordered with less then 16 ssa disk, your
need have extra dummy boxes - somewhere in the machine room.

In the worst case, you can order dummy disk unit from IBM or leave the
wrong disk in the drawer and the ssa loop is remain closed.
