Quanta uses mime types defined in KDE, so it sounds like your KDE  
install might be broken.

To check this the best method is to try loading the document in Kate  
and see if it works with Kate.
If Kate handles the file fine, then KDE should be fine, and Quanta is  
at fault, if Kate causes the errors, the problems are with KDE/Kate  
not having the correct data.
Also, after the upgrade you did restart KDE? - usually logging out and  
logging back in would do this, a full restart would not be needed.

Also you probably should be running Quanta 3.5.10 if running KDE  
3.5.10 - not that it hurts, but it does seem strange that your distro  
would not be providing the same versions.
