The limitation is more basic than that.  mysql wants to mmap(), and
mmap() on an i386 is limited to about 2GB by the 32-bit address space
of the CPU.  The maximum you could tweak it to would probably be
something like 2.7GB.

The mysql people offer to implement features for money.  Perhaps
that's worth investigating.
