AFAIK Compiz doesn't depend on Xgl. It runs on AIGLX as
well, which makes use of the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap
extension to get you the necessary facilities to do OpenGL
compositing without having the entire server running on
OpenGL (which is what XGL is about). AIGLX has shipped
with X.org X11 7.1.

As for GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, that's in Mesa I
think, and the development version of the ATi Radeon
R300 supports it, and nVidia has confirmed it plans
to support the extension in its upcoming 9xxx driver
series (which is also supposed to get Xvideo working
with COMPOSITE).
