Perhaps the symlink for the appropriate X server is not there? XBINDIR is
/usr/X11R6/bin and the executable X is a symlink to a server:

lrwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel       26 Oct 18 21:18 X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_Mach64
-r-xr-xr-x  1 root   wheel   119631 Sep 11 07:40 X-Files
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel   915504 Aug 31 09:18 XF86Setup
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel  2173332 Aug 31 09:17 XF86_3DLabs
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel  1845951 Aug 31 09:16 XF86_Mach32
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel  1980821 Aug 31 09:16 XF86_Mach64
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel  2389155 Aug 31 09:16 XF86_S3
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel  2116386 Aug 31 09:16 XF86_S3V
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel  3251230 Aug 31 09:16 XF86_SVGA

Have you run XF86Setup all the way through?	- Ralph
