i think i ran into this problem myself, and if i recall correctly, it was
really weird.  it happened when i tried to run configure as root.  weird thing
was, it only happened when i logged in as root, not when i logged in as another
user, then su'ed to root.  strange.  anyway, try either a) logging in as
another user, then doing su to change to root or b) run 'configure' & 'make'
as a regular user, then run 'make install' as root.
