The fundamental problem that I have with the feature is that it create a sense
of security that it may not provide, even if the OS supports perfect
shredding of the file in question itself. You see, the file may have arrived
in a multitude of ways on your computer, and while the file was being
processed it may have been started in part or in full on your harddisk
already. Merily shredding the visible file only will never get rid of the
hidden traces that can have been left behind getting the file on your system
in the first place.
The correct solution to this privacy problem is using an encrypted
file-system.
