Subject: [kde-redhat-users] can't connect to print server from KDE apps
Message: 1

I'm having the same problem experienced earlier this year in a
thread started by kwhiskers. If I try to print from any KDE app,
I get a dialog "Initializing printing system" followed by a
failure message "Failed to connect to cups server..."
None of the suggestions in that earlier thread seem to pertain,
as my cups server host is correctly listed as localhost in the
config page at port 631 - Rex had asked this back then:
$ rpm -q kdelibs kdebase
kdelibs-3.5.5-0.8.fc6
kdebase-3.5.5-1.1.fc6.kde
And those are the results -
I can print a test page from the cups web page configuration
page, and also from within Firefox

Any of these seem relevant?

Another user here saw the same problem the other day. I suspect kde's
(hard) timeout of 1.5 seconds (waiting for response from cups) may be
too low in some cases. I'm spinning a kdelibs-3.5.5-1.1 build that
raises the timeout to 3 secs to see if that helps.

I would say no. In one case, the network load issue, my machine
is only on one network, the internet. The printer is attached
directly via the parallel port, and I tried to print this am
when nothing else was being done on the machine besides
background tasks.

In the second case, the writer reports that the kprinter app can
access the printer list - in my case that's not true - I get the
same errors I reported in my orgiginal post

Actually, libopensync is already in Fedora Extras.

Perhaps you will want to ask its maintainer to recompile it so that it
includes the irmc-plugin.

Why KDE-Redhat? Perhaps because Gilboa also would like to use Kitchensync. I
do not know if a recompilation of Kitchensync is needed to support it.

I would personnaly like the SyncML plugin of libopensync to work (to sync with
a Nokia N70).

Subject: [kde-redhat-users] PyQt4 in Fedora Extras
Message: 6

Hi -

Are there plans to move PyQt4 into Fedora Extras at any point? I suppose
the problem is that sip has to remain constant as it is part of Fedora
Core, and this does not allow updating PyQt4 fast enough to match qt4.

It makes it pretty hard to distribute PyQt4 apps at the moment as it
unsupported in the main distribution.

Thanks

Jeremy

Yup.
It's (still) pending package review:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/190189

Once that's done, it's in.

OK - this is a bit strange. I remembered a problem I had a year
or so ago with another, non-KDE app, Spambayes, which runs a
proxy server process for mail to scan it for spam - after some
updates I can't remember, Spambayes was no longer able to
connect to localhost:8880 - the 'fix' turned out to be using the
machine-name which is aliased to localhost, in this
case 'vrproductions3' - on a hunch, I just went into KDE Control
Center/Peripherals/Printers/Print Manager/Configure Manager and
changed the 'Cups server' from localhost to vrproductions3 -
what I don't understand is why this works since that machine
name is aliased to localhost in my 'hosts' file. But, the
stubborn fact is that I can now see my printer in the KDE
Control Center list, and it now prints from within KDE apps.

I find the whole question of machine naming in Fedora to be
somewhat confusing, and I think I'm having a different issue
with this on my home machine - but that's another story...
