I now have a similar problem. I can open a browser window and put
localhost:631 in the address bar, and get into CUPS config that
way. In those pages, I can see my configure printer, and print a
test page. If I browse to a web site in Firefox, I can print
pages just fine.

However, if I open any KDE app, I can't print from it; if I go
into Control Center/Peripherals/Printers I get a long hourglass
and message saying

"Initializing Manager" then tinkling glass and a second error
window saying:

"Unable to retrieve the printer list. Error message received from
manager: Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS
server is correctly installed and running. Error: localhost:
read failed (15)."

I get the above error messages when trying to pring from any KDE
app... I found a thread from last May having to do with an
improper address being configured into the "Host" field in
the "Cups Manager" configuration window, but that's NOT the
problem here - that field properly says "Local host"

Confirmed. Not sure if this is a problem with kde or xscreensaver (yet).

OK, pushed all the quasi-experimental new builds into testing.

For the record, we don't (yet) officially require folks to enable/use
rpmforge. As previously alluded-to, I've found 3 (so far)
quasi-critical packaging problems with rpmforge's packages. My
problem/bug reports regarding them has so far received no love (ie,
sound of crickets), so my hopes of relying upon rpmforge are dwindling.

The only other change in testing packages are that a new kdepim-gnokii
subpkg now exists that includes the gnokii functionality (since, as
previously mentioned in this thread), rpmforge's gnokii packaging is ABI
incompatible with the gnokii offerings from Fedora Extras.
