Thanks to all who have tried to help. I hope to consolidate the thread here=
.

I have partially solved the automounting of usb 'scsi' mass storage cameras=
,
which is done by hal. No udev rules are necessary. No device definitions ar=
e
required. It's all already there. fstab-sync takes care of creating mount
points. /dev/sda and sda1 both appear when the camera is plugged in; the
necessary kernel modules are automatically loaded. Furthermore, it all
works...

If one is using gnome: plug in the camera and the filesystem on the camera'=
s
memory chip will be automatically mounted to /media/usbdisk.

The problem is how to get this to happen under kde. Under kde, one has to
manually mount the camera. Isn't there a way to make this behave under kde
the way it is supposed to?

Well, am I perhaps confusing what is meant by automount? I just read this
article: http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=DBUS

The author talks of double-clicking to mount on the removable storage icon
in the media:/ list. I guess that is what I did in Gnome. An icon appeared
on the desktop that I double-clicked and the file browser opened, showing me
the contents of the disk.

What I understand as automounting is the following: I open up the konqueror
and the files on the removable media will already be there, in line, just as
are all the other mounted partitions, right then and there, without any
clicking.

I suppose this is no longer worth pursuing, now that I have seen the
difference in the approaches... that they are not in fact different. It's
just that in KDE, the place one clicks is buried in the sidebar. I guess
it's easy enough to create a link...

Just tried it myself and gtk-qt-engine-0.60-4 + baghira-0.71-1 seems to
function mostly fine for the subset of gtk applications I tried:

* abiword-2.4.1, toolbar icons are (still) missing
* openoffice.org (fedora's), toolbar/menus (still) often blank-out
* firefox: crashes with baghira-0.71, gtk-qt-engine-0.60-1 no crash, but
toolbar icons missing

What other gtk/gnome apps, if any, are crashing for you (other than
firefox)? I'm trying to compile a good list to submit this bug upstream.

I have enjoyed your work with kde immensely and am thankful for all your
hard work.

Lately I have been having some issues with kicker and kmail crashing
when doing different things and I would like to post bugs to the kde bug
database. When the crash happens the backtrace is missing all the debuginfo.

What I would like to know is, would it be possible to have debuginfo
packages available as well?
What would need to be done to have these?

Thanks again for all your hard work!

Possible? Sure, but a *lot* more storage space is needed to host the
-debuginfo pkgs. (I'd estimate our usage would almost double, but
that's a gross estimate pulled out my a?#$). (-:

Aren't the debug info packages just the same packages with the debugging
information left in (i.e. unstripped binaries)? In that case, you would
have the original packages, plus packages of greater size, so your
storage space would more than double. I could have used this at times
as well, but I don't think it's practical to host that much stuff. I
find that the KDE packages are not too hard to rebuild with the provided
spec files. You can build the KDE packages with debugging by passing an
option (--enable-debug=full) at the ./configure step. According to the
spec files I've looked at, you just have to define the debug variable
when you do the RPM build.
