Can I assume you suspect kget to be the cause of the KDE hang?

Rex,

Sadly enough, due to the brutality of the KDE crash, I can't really
tell.
I can say that kget started acting up, eating all the CPU, before the
crash, and not long after KDE became unresponsive.
However, after I zapped X and re-login, both KDE and kget were working
just fine.

I want to start a program running as part of the KDE login process. Is there a
way to do that? I can't use the add it to rc.local trick, because it requires
kde to be running...

I'll give that a go for a few days, as I'm on FC4 too.
Did you leave the 'auto-suspend' of the KDE sound system off ?

Ah, that would explain it. ;-) FC3 updates now has 3.4.2 packages.

Actually, upon further review, it appears to be a packaging error on our
part, and upgrading *from* kde-redhat kde-i18n triggers the problem.

I'll look into fixing this.

Upon even further review, it's actually a redhat packaging error going
back quite aways... and instead of fixing it, they've perpetuated it
into the current packages, shown by this snippet of code from their
kde-i18n srpm:
# workaround for rpm conflict
for l in ca en_GB lt nb nn pt_BR ; do
   [ -d $l/common ] && (cd $l; rm -rf common && ln -s ../en/common common)
done

so it affects ca en_GB lt bn nn pt_BR locales.

Hmm... I'll have to think about what do about it now. Do we
1. do nothing, so upgrading from our to redhat packages yield conflicts.
2. change our packages to be "bug compatible" with redhat's (which will
yield the same conflicts as 1, yuck).
3. try some %%pre/%%preun magic to try to workaround it.

I'll try (3), and see how it goes.

Turn off the KDE sound system altogether, and make sure no processes of
artsd are running. amarok may try to load artsd itself on startup
before you get a change to switch to xine, so you may have to quit it,
kill the artsd process, and open it again.

OK pushed fixed/updated kde-i18n-3.4.2 rpms (*all* locales) to testing
just now, with safeguards in place to properly handle upgrading from
redhat rpms. Unfortunately, I found no workaround for upgrading the
other direction (short of avoiding upgrading, and rpm -e the older
version(s) first).
