It's possible to draw the cursors directly on the canvas and to set the X
cursor to transparent. But I'm not sure if we really want this. X cursors
are so damn fast and on many systems hardware accelerated. Yes they are b/w only
but do we really need colored or greyscale cursors. What do other people think
about this?

You are right about the number of cursors we need. One cursor per tool
is perhaps to much.
