Well, to some extent, that's true. My motto is "find a niche and fill it" :-)
Giving newbies a full introduction to *nix--text editing, permissions, startup
files, etc.--is way beyond the scope of what I'm trying to do, and would be
reinventing the wheel, since there are already perfectly good websites which do
just that (e.g. LinuxNewbie.org). The audience I'm aiming for are the people
who are at about the point I was a couple months ago--moderately experienced
with Linux, but daunted by the sheer complexity of KDE and unsure how to
properly install it. In particular, I want to counteract the effect of some of
the bad advice that got me burned (e.g. "use pgcc and -O6, it can't hurt!").

Frankly, I'm not sure KDE is at the point yet where rank newbies should be
trying to install it themselves. Not unless it comes pre-packaged with their
distro.

However, your comments do bring up a valid point--I should give people a
more clear warning that I will be presuming a certain amount of background,
and that if they are total beginners, perhaps a better route is to find a
distro with a stable KDE 2 pre-installed.

Thanks for the feedback,
Suzanne
