A QTimer works perfectly, if you make sure the event loop gets run.
Sometimes a big if.

However, alarm() is a bigger if, unless you have a separate X server
connection just for the cursor code, or unless you can guarantee that
all writes to the X connection are atomic.

I know about one programt that has adopted the former approach, none
that have adopted the latter.
