Well the problem is that if you pressed Apply and Cancel will not cancel the 
changes, you are lost if you want to go back to the previous (!= default) 
state. You're right, that Apply is not a good name in this case, but I think 
people usually use Apply to preview the changes and make further 
modifications, if they don't like it. And if in the end they decided that 
they don't like it at all, they might want to go back to the original state. 
Personally I think that the purpose of Cancel is to cancel all the 
modifications made. 
 Regarding the implementations: the easiest way to do is to save the settings 
when the dialog is shown and apply these saved settings if Cancel is pressed. 
It shouldn't be so hard. 
 But as it changes the meaning of a button (Apply->Preview), I accept that it 
cannot be done now for 3.2. But I would like to discuss it, as I think the 
current way is not so good. It can be a new job for the usability team...
