I believe this is because of a recent change in kdmrc which makes it run the 
Xsession in KDEDIR/share/config/kdm by default. It used to run the one in 
/etc/X11/xdm or wherever.

Check the Session= value in kdmrc and make it run your distro's Xsession 
again. (Xsession is in charge of making sense from the string kdm passes to 
it, i.e. it sees "kde" and knows it should run startkde).
