Well, the interfaces that aRts currently provides are really just PlayObjects.
The motivation for going for this first was, that using this as abstraction,
it should be easy to manage even media types that don't have any audio stream
(like midi files or pure video files), and to give the implementor of the
decoder a lot of freedom how exactly a media gets played. It might be useful
to standarize on interface which only decode/encode, and to build PlayObjects
on top of that, maybe in conjunction with the video capabilities people are
working on right now, but nothing has been done in this area yet.

That said, it is possible to somewhat use PlayObjects for decoding only, but
some of them might not really designed for this. An example how to do it can
be found in arts/examples/playtofile*.
