I believe it is totally legal to write uncompressed GIFs, and also
RLE-encoded GIFs (does anybody support that anyway?). If the GIF writing
code would support encoders (none, RLE, LZW, whatever...) then it should be
possible to provide the LZW one only where Unisys's patent isn't an issue
(is there such a place?).
