Do not use Qt "master" branch, use the "4.8" branch.
(the master branch is dead and vary out of date)
(yes, i know it is confusing)

in 4.8, source compatibility is kept and there is a new macro do define to 
enable the optimisation. 

But the patch is probably still good.
