Using konqueor to goto a ftp site I would type into the location bar:

ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk

It would seem that as you write the url everytime a charchter is typed it tries to \
look the site up. and you get a message Unknow host
ftp.m 

For instance
as you type

ftp:// (now does a look up and returns with "unkown host"
then after clicking ok to the dialog
ftp://f
"unknown host, f"
then
ftp://ft
And so on you get the picture I'm sure it does this for all characters.
